In this document, I will talk about the storyboard for our film opening. Here is the first
draft of our storyboard which shows the film opening of what can be seen through
the lens of the camera.
The images below show the final draft of our storyboard, stating the timings of each
shot, the type of camera shot and the sounds used. We added more shots
from the draft as the timings for the completed film opening would be quite
short.
These shots are of the production logo and the establishing shot of the film opening.
A production logo is always needed at the start of the film to establish who made the
film. The next shot is a low shot of the ground and the person who is running runs in
front of it. This creates enigma because at the start we see equilibrium as a field is
quiet and natural and then we see the man running which makes the audience want
to watch more to see what happens. There will be some dogs barking in the
background to indicate that this is a chase scene. There will be suspense music to
portray mood.
This is an establishing shot of the field which indicates to the audience the setting of
the film opening. There will be the same non-diegetic sound used from the previous
shots. The scene below this picture shows the face of the main character.
Throughout the film opening the main character doesn’t speak, only the antagonist
speaks throughout. The camera movement is handheld to create an action feel and
hold the audience in a state of suspense.
This scene is a mid-shot behind the protagonist to show where he is going. It will
also be handheld camera movement. There will be the same non diegetic music
used from the previous frames. The transitions throughout the film opening are
straight cuts to jump quickly to the action.
These scenes parallel the before scenes as they are happening in the same time
frame. The first interrogation scene is a panning camera movement to the over the
shoulder shot of the antagonist. Our main focus is on the girl in the chair as her
head is down, which provides enigma for the next scenes. The scene below shows
the girl looking up and we see her face has been beaten. As the shot is a close up,
we can see the blood and bruises on her face. There will be no sound played to
create mood as it is a dilemma scene.
These scenes are both over the shoulder shots to show the conversation between
the two people. It shows the face of the male antagonist for the first time who is
interrogating her for answers. The antagonist bends down so his face fills the frame
of the camera but we can also see the girl in the shot. The lighting will be shone
from one side so we can see what is happening in the dark room and cast shadows.
The sound used is the dialogue of the antagonist and we will be using the 180° rule
so that it won’t be confusing for the audience.
This scene is a low angle shot looking up at the antagonist from the point of view of
the girl as she is about to be beaten. This establishes to the audience that he has
more power. The extreme close up shot of the eyes symbolise her fear to the
audience. There will be some non-diegetic sound to create drama.
This shot is a silhouette of the scene that creates power for the antagonist before he
strikes. It will then cut to a black screen where she screams. The scene below goes
back to the main character running into the woods. It is a mid-shot where there is no
diegetic music played so that we can hear the natural, ambient sounds.
This shot is behind the main character as he is running just like in the first section
when he was running towards the woods. It is handheld so that gives the idea that
he is being chased and show the character’s exhaustion as he has escaped. The
audience will empathise with the character and feel the mood of the scene.
These scenes show the main character finding the bag that was parachuted in for
him. The shots are held steady as it is not action. Both shots are mid-shots so we
can see the character and the bag as he takes it.
This scene shows a point of view shot of the note that was left for him, as he looks at
the contents of the bag. This shot is what he sees to make the audience feel
involved in the film. The next scene shows him taking the gun and cocking it,
showing that he is ready for anything.
This shot shows a mid-shot of the main character holding the gun out in front of him.
This iconographies what you expect to see in the spy genre, as in most spy films you
see gun action. It is also a mid-shot which is handheld to imply the recklessness he
feels.
This scene is a focus pull from the person to the end of the gun. This is creative as it
shows the significance between the main character and the gun. It then goes to the
title scene but still playing the non-diegetic music in the background. White lettering
is used to suggest purity and innocence.
All these things combine to create a creative film opening that will link to the genre.
The variety of camera shots, editing and sound combine with the mise en scene to
make it an effective film opening.

Storyboard

  • 1. In this document, I will talk about the storyboard for our film opening. Here is the first draft of our storyboard which shows the film opening of what can be seen through the lens of the camera.
  • 2. The images below show the final draft of our storyboard, stating the timings of each shot, the type of camera shot and the sounds used. We added more shots from the draft as the timings for the completed film opening would be quite short.
  • 3. These shots are of the production logo and the establishing shot of the film opening. A production logo is always needed at the start of the film to establish who made the film. The next shot is a low shot of the ground and the person who is running runs in front of it. This creates enigma because at the start we see equilibrium as a field is quiet and natural and then we see the man running which makes the audience want to watch more to see what happens. There will be some dogs barking in the background to indicate that this is a chase scene. There will be suspense music to portray mood. This is an establishing shot of the field which indicates to the audience the setting of the film opening. There will be the same non-diegetic sound used from the previous shots. The scene below this picture shows the face of the main character. Throughout the film opening the main character doesn’t speak, only the antagonist speaks throughout. The camera movement is handheld to create an action feel and hold the audience in a state of suspense.
  • 4. This scene is a mid-shot behind the protagonist to show where he is going. It will also be handheld camera movement. There will be the same non diegetic music used from the previous frames. The transitions throughout the film opening are straight cuts to jump quickly to the action. These scenes parallel the before scenes as they are happening in the same time frame. The first interrogation scene is a panning camera movement to the over the shoulder shot of the antagonist. Our main focus is on the girl in the chair as her head is down, which provides enigma for the next scenes. The scene below shows the girl looking up and we see her face has been beaten. As the shot is a close up, we can see the blood and bruises on her face. There will be no sound played to create mood as it is a dilemma scene. These scenes are both over the shoulder shots to show the conversation between the two people. It shows the face of the male antagonist for the first time who is interrogating her for answers. The antagonist bends down so his face fills the frame of the camera but we can also see the girl in the shot. The lighting will be shone from one side so we can see what is happening in the dark room and cast shadows. The sound used is the dialogue of the antagonist and we will be using the 180° rule so that it won’t be confusing for the audience.
  • 5. This scene is a low angle shot looking up at the antagonist from the point of view of the girl as she is about to be beaten. This establishes to the audience that he has more power. The extreme close up shot of the eyes symbolise her fear to the audience. There will be some non-diegetic sound to create drama. This shot is a silhouette of the scene that creates power for the antagonist before he strikes. It will then cut to a black screen where she screams. The scene below goes back to the main character running into the woods. It is a mid-shot where there is no diegetic music played so that we can hear the natural, ambient sounds. This shot is behind the main character as he is running just like in the first section when he was running towards the woods. It is handheld so that gives the idea that he is being chased and show the character’s exhaustion as he has escaped. The audience will empathise with the character and feel the mood of the scene.
  • 6. These scenes show the main character finding the bag that was parachuted in for him. The shots are held steady as it is not action. Both shots are mid-shots so we can see the character and the bag as he takes it. This scene shows a point of view shot of the note that was left for him, as he looks at the contents of the bag. This shot is what he sees to make the audience feel involved in the film. The next scene shows him taking the gun and cocking it, showing that he is ready for anything. This shot shows a mid-shot of the main character holding the gun out in front of him. This iconographies what you expect to see in the spy genre, as in most spy films you see gun action. It is also a mid-shot which is handheld to imply the recklessness he feels.
  • 7. This scene is a focus pull from the person to the end of the gun. This is creative as it shows the significance between the main character and the gun. It then goes to the title scene but still playing the non-diegetic music in the background. White lettering is used to suggest purity and innocence. All these things combine to create a creative film opening that will link to the genre. The variety of camera shots, editing and sound combine with the mise en scene to make it an effective film opening.
