Anaesthetic gases used in medical procedures are accumulating in the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. Specifically, concentrations of desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane have been rising globally over the past decade. These gases are potent greenhouse gases, with desflurane having an effect 2500 times stronger than carbon dioxide per kilogram. While the gases make up a small part of total greenhouse emissions, their levels are growing and warrant attention from the healthcare industry.
