WorldView: Fundematal Questions
 Who created the Universe?
 Who created us (human beings)?
 What is the purpose of my/our existence?
 How should we behave towards each other?
 How should we organize our societies?
A Western education does not DIRECTLY answer these questions –
HOWEVER, indirect answers are provided, which conflict with Islam
Islam provides radically different answers.
Muslims with Western Education grow up with conflicted minds.

Islamization of Knowledge
 How can we prevent this conflict?
 A Madrassah provides education on the source materials of Islam
 But this education seems mostly irrelevant to our daily lives
 Western education provides essential information required today
 But it is poisonous to our religious values
 How to resolve this conflict, and educate Muslim students so that they
know both Deen and Dunya? This is the IOK project.

Values: Western Education
 Who created the Universe? No answer (by accident)
 What is the purpose of creation of man? (no purpose)
 What is the goal of our lives? (pleasure, luxury, power, fame)
 What are rules of morality? (NONE – Machiavelli – rules used to keep
public deceived, which allows rulers to rule).
 How should our societies be constructed? (greed and competition)
 International Arena: Survival of the Fittest.

Eurocentric History
 Enlightenment of Europe starting from 16th Century
 Rise of Reason, Science, Technology, Democracy, Secular Faith
 Spectacular Progress on all fronts, leaving behind all rest of humanity
 Colonization of Globe to bring benefits of European civilization to all
of humanity (The White Man’s Burden).
 Developed Countries – waiting for the Under-developed countries to
grow up and become like them.
 There is only one path to progress. All Social Science is Western
Social Science. There is no alternative TINA.

Counter-Narrative
 Pattern of History, described by Ibn-e-Khaldun: Civlization age and
mature, become wrapped in luxury, defeated by young barbarians.
 700 year old Islamic Civilization of Al-Andalus, defeated by barbarian
European tribes.
 Acquisition of books leads to European Enlightenment.
 Breakup of Catholic Church, rise of Protestants.
 Perpetual political/religious wars leads to public disenchantment
 Barbaric, Savage and Violent colonization of the world – due to
comparative advantage in violence, and Military Revolution

 Moral Decline of West
 Oppression of the Muslims
 Tales of Muslim Heroism and Counter-Struggles
 Oppression/Destruction of Other Cultures, and Tales of their
resistance and heroism
 The Narrative of Progress, replaced by death, destruction and doom
of planet caused by excess greed.
 Power of Propaganda. Iraq, Libya, Syria versus Islamic Terrorism.

 Standard: Fell behind in S&T, superiority of Western culture (IH)
Islamic:
 Loss of Khilafa
 Maudoodi – State Capture (Hegelian)
 Da’wah – Mission of the Ummah
 Purification – Bid’ah and Shirk
 Stagnation of Knowledge – Closing of Ijtihad and Minds
 Jihad, and abandonment of Siyasa
 Hybrids.

 Responsibility before God.
 Living in the World without being of the World.
 The Living Quran – learn to apply the Quran to every moment of our

 Currently the essential missing skill

Resolution of Conflicts
 Islamic Methodology is Tatbiq – try to make all things true – accept
both sides of opposite views. Radically different from binary logic.
 Accept ALL as valid diagnosis.
 Critical Issue is SEQUENCING –
 Even this is not something to fight over. All dimensions are required,
and must be done simultaneously
 Jihad and Building Hospitals – Learning Warfare and Medical Science
 Different groups need to work on different dimensions
 All dimensions must be done in an Islamic Way.

An Islamic WorldView: Essential Component of an Islamic Education

  • 2. 1 WorldView: Fundematal Questions  Who created the Universe?  Who created us (human beings)?  What is the purpose of my/our existence?  How should we behave towards each other?  How should we organize our societies? A Western education does not DIRECTLY answer these questions – HOWEVER, indirect answers are provided, which conflict with Islam Islam provides radically different answers. Muslims with Western Education grow up with conflicted minds.
  • 3. 2 Islamization of Knowledge  How can we prevent this conflict?  A Madrassah provides education on the source materials of Islam  But this education seems mostly irrelevant to our daily lives  Western education provides essential information required today  But it is poisonous to our religious values  How to resolve this conflict, and educate Muslim students so that they know both Deen and Dunya? This is the IOK project.

  • 5. 4 Values: Western Education  Who created the Universe? No answer (by accident)  What is the purpose of creation of man? (no purpose)  What is the goal of our lives? (pleasure, luxury, power, fame)  What are rules of morality? (NONE – Machiavelli – rules used to keep public deceived, which allows rulers to rule).  How should our societies be constructed? (greed and competition)  International Arena: Survival of the Fittest.
  • 6. 5 Eurocentric History  Enlightenment of Europe starting from 16th Century  Rise of Reason, Science, Technology, Democracy, Secular Faith  Spectacular Progress on all fronts, leaving behind all rest of humanity  Colonization of Globe to bring benefits of European civilization to all of humanity (The White Man’s Burden).  Developed Countries – waiting for the Under-developed countries to grow up and become like them.  There is only one path to progress. All Social Science is Western Social Science. There is no alternative TINA.
  • 7. 6 Counter-Narrative  Pattern of History, described by Ibn-e-Khaldun: Civlization age and mature, become wrapped in luxury, defeated by young barbarians.  700 year old Islamic Civilization of Al-Andalus, defeated by barbarian European tribes.  Acquisition of books leads to European Enlightenment.  Breakup of Catholic Church, rise of Protestants.  Perpetual political/religious wars leads to public disenchantment  Barbaric, Savage and Violent colonization of the world – due to comparative advantage in violence, and Military Revolution
  • 8. 7 Counter-Narratives  Moral Decline of West  Oppression of the Muslims  Tales of Muslim Heroism and Counter-Struggles  Oppression/Destruction of Other Cultures, and Tales of their resistance and heroism  The Narrative of Progress, replaced by death, destruction and doom of planet caused by excess greed.  Power of Propaganda. Iraq, Libya, Syria versus Islamic Terrorism.
  • 9. 8 Causes of Muslim Decline?  Standard: Fell behind in S&T, superiority of Western culture (IH) Islamic:  Loss of Khilafa  Maudoodi – State Capture (Hegelian)  Da’wah – Mission of the Ummah  Purification – Bid’ah and Shirk  Stagnation of Knowledge – Closing of Ijtihad and Minds  Jihad, and abandonment of Siyasa  Hybrids.

  • 11. 10 Resolution of Conflicts  Islamic Methodology is Tatbiq – try to make all things true – accept both sides of opposite views. Radically different from binary logic.  Accept ALL as valid diagnosis.  Critical Issue is SEQUENCING –  Even this is not something to fight over. All dimensions are required, and must be done simultaneously  Jihad and Building Hospitals – Learning Warfare and Medical Science  Different groups need to work on different dimensions  All dimensions must be done in an Islamic Way.
