This document summarizes a study that investigated cohesion and rhetorical moves in thesis abstracts from the English Education department at a university in Indonesia. The study analyzed 10 thesis abstracts based on Halliday's concepts of cohesion and Swales' framework of rhetorical moves. The results found that all cohesive devices were used except substitution, with reference being most frequent. Some cohesive devices were used incorrectly. Most abstracts achieved a medium level of cohesion. In terms of moves, most abstracts did not follow the standard framework, with different move patterns identified. The study concluded that most abstracts had medium cohesion levels and rhetorical moves were not well organized.
ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL MOVES OF JOURNAL ARTICLES AND ITS IMPLICATION TO THE T...April Knyff
This document analyzes the rhetorical moves used in journal articles and implications for teaching academic writing. It analyzed 8 articles from Indonesian and English journals using frameworks for introduction and discussion sections. The analysis found that both native English and Indonesian writers generally follow the frameworks, though there is variation. Rhetorical moves were most frequently used in introductions to claim centrality or counter-claim gaps. This suggests rhetorical moves should be taught to undergraduate students to strengthen academic writing skills.

This document summarizes a research paper that analyzed the rhetorical moves and translation techniques used in undergraduate thesis abstracts written in Indonesian and English. The study used 60 abstracts from English and Indonesian literature programs. It found that both languages generally used the same rhetorical moves, with Move 3 (Method) and Move 4 (Results) appearing in all abstracts. Move 5 (Conclusion) appeared less frequently across languages. In terms of translation techniques, literal translation was used most frequently to translate between Indonesian and English. The study recommends further analysis with more data from different fields to expand understanding of rhetorical moves and translation techniques in academic abstracts.
A GENRE ANALYSIS ON THE DISCUSSION SECTION OF QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RE...Jeff Nelson
This document discusses a study that analyzed the discussion sections of quantitative and qualitative research articles in English language teaching and linguistics. The study aimed to investigate the moves and steps in the discussion sections, as well as the rhetorical structure patterns. It analyzed 20 qualitative and 20 quantitative research articles using Yang and Allison's framework. The study found that all moves from the framework were present in both types of articles, though the frequency differed. It also found two main patterns - repetitive and organized - though there was some variation within each. The study provides evidence on the generic structure of discussion sections and insights for move analysis in this field.

A Literature Review Of Lesson Study In Initial Teacher EducationTye Rausch
This literature review examined how learning and observation are discussed in studies of Lesson Study (LS) in initial teacher education (ITE). Independent searches by teams in Norway and England identified 68 relevant peer-reviewed journal articles. The review found a lack of clarity around definitions of learning and how it should be observed in LS. There was also wide variation in the focus of classroom observations in ITE LS studies. The review suggests researchers should more explicitly define learning and observation methods to strengthen LS research in ITE.
Using translog to investigate self correctionsin translationRusdi Noor Rosa
This article is a pilot study using an exploratory case study (Berg, 2001) as a method to study the English into Indonesian translation process done by the student-translators. Translog software (Jakobsen, 1999; Jakobsen & Schou, 1999) was used as an instrument to investigate self-corrections during the translation process. This study takes two students of Master Degree Program of Linguistics Department majoring translation studies at University of Sumatera Utara without any professional experience on translation business. The participant selection criteria also consider linguistic competence including Test of Bahasa Indonesia proficiency (UKBI), Test of English proficiency (TOEFL), and Test of typing speed by using TQ (TypingQueen) typing test. The participants (the student translators) translated the English text of 310 words into Bahasa Indonesia (their native language). The translations processses are recorded by using Translog and the use of online dictionaries and resources is allowed. This study found seven types of self-corrections among which word deletion (WD) is the most frequently used. The finding of this pilot study is expected to give clues to the contribution of self-corrections to the quality of the translation product.
The present study aimed at exploring the abstracts of research articles written by non-native English researchers to uncover the specific characteristics of academic vocabulary employed in the English research articles abstracts. It focuses on frequency and coverage distribution of the words from the Academic Word List (Coxhead, 2000) in the abstracts of research articles. The source of data for this corpus study was gathered from 97 abstracts written by the EFL researchers and published by the Journal Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Missio at STKIP St. Paulus Ruteng from 2015 until 2018. The results of this study revealed that the coverage of K1, the first most frequent 1000 English words, is the most dominant lexical items applied by the researchers. It covered 71.33% of the texts. The representation of lexical items that belong to K2, the second most frequent 1000 English words, covered 5.44% of all the words used by the writers in their abstracts. Moreover, the presence of Academic Word List, which refers to a list of 570 word families that are commonly found in academic texts and Off-list, which refers to the words that do not belong to K1 or K2 because it is related to certain field, has slight difference over all of the texts where the former covers 11.95% and the later covers 11.26%. As far as the findings of the present study are concerned, the room for some improvements on academic words applied in the abstracts need to pay attention.

Analyzing Verbs In The Discussion Section Of Master S Theses Written By Irani...Jim Jimenez
This study analyzes the verbs used in the discussion section of 60 master's theses written by Iranian students studying English as a foreign language. The theses were categorized based on their research approach as quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods. The verbs were analyzed based on their reporting or nonreporting status, as well as their tense, aspect, and voice. The findings showed there were no differences in verb use across the different research approaches, except for a higher use of progressive aspect for reporting verbs in qualitative theses and passive voice for nonreporting verbs in mixed methods theses. The study aims to contribute to understanding of verb use in academic writing by non-native English speakers.

A Comparative Study Of Headings In Theses And Research Articles In Applied Li...Luisa Polanco
This study examined headings in 110 theses and 500 research articles in applied linguistics to compare functional and conventional heading styles between the two genres. Headings were analyzed based on frequency, length, syntactic structure, and textual features. The study found a higher frequency of functional headings in both genres, particularly in research articles. Virtually all functional and conventional syntactic options used in headings were significantly different between the genres. The higher use of functional headings in research articles may enhance their chances of publication in prestigious journals. The study aims to assist style guide writers and help novice writers gain recognition in academia.
This study investigates pragmatic and discourse transfer in the compliment response strategies used by Vietnamese learners of English when communicating with Australians. The study uses a new methodology called "Naturalized Role-play" to examine how compliment response strategies are combined in Vietnamese, Australian English, and the interlanguage of Vietnamese learners. This is the first study to analyze compliment responses in both Vietnamese and Australian English, as well as pragmatic and discourse transfer between the two languages. The results provide new insights into cross-cultural differences in politeness strategies and how first language and cultural influences may affect second language use through pragmatic and discourse transfer.

A Self-Assessment Checklist For Undergraduate Students Argumentative WritingPedro Craggett
This document presents a self-assessment checklist developed for undergraduate students to help improve their argumentative writing skills. It discusses existing writing checklists and their limitations in comprehensiveness and lack of theoretical framework. The developed checklist is based on a theoretical framework combining the Pyramid of Argumentation model and Process Approach. It aims to provide a genre-specific tool sensitive to features of argumentative essays to help students self-assess and strengthen their writing.
The document discusses three cognitive linguistic approaches to teaching vocabulary to EFL learners: categorization, prototype, and metaphor. Categorization involves grouping words based on similarities. The prototype approach recognizes that some words are better representations of categories than others. Metaphor allows words to take on figurative meanings beyond their literal definitions. Studies have found that lessons applying these cognitive linguistic concepts can improve students' vocabulary retention compared to traditional memorization methods.
Theoretical Background and Related Literature.pptxJessaBejer1
The document discusses the importance of the theoretical background section of a research paper. It explains that the theoretical background sets the foundation for a study by providing context about existing theories and knowledge in the field. It should include the components of a theoretical framework, which are the theories being used, a review of related literature, and studies related to those theories. The document provides guidance on how to identify and explain relevant theories, review related literature, and discuss related studies to support a theoretical framework.
The major thrust of this research has been a psycholinguistic analysis of effectiveness of topic familiarity and two types of translation tasks (from L1 to L2 and L2 to L1) on retention of incidental vocabulary learning for a longer duration. The effects of translation tasks and topic familiarity have been studied individually .However, the relative effect of topic familiarity conditions and translation in two directions have not been attended to in longer period of time. In doing so, thirty intermediate EFL students were asked to translate a few texts in two directions with two conditions of topic (un)familiarity .Each text contains some unknown words .The students were tested on these unknown words and the responses were examined in immediate and delayed post tests. The delayed post test session held after 2 weeks. The results show that, unlike the revised hierarchical model (RHM), translation task directions did not have significant effect on incidental vocabulary learning while retention was more effective with topic familiar texts in the both tests .In addition, topic familiarity of the texts play an important part in the process of incidental vocabulary learning. The article concludes with some suggestions for task designing and vocabulary teaching.

This document summarizes a study that compared the effects of teacher revision versus peer revision on Iranian EFL students' comprehension and production of relative clauses in writing. The study involved 109 students who were divided into three groups - one receiving teacher revision, one receiving peer revision, and a control group. Both teacher and peer revision groups underwent eight treatment sessions focusing on their respective revision methods. Results from pre- and post-tests indicated that both teacher and peer revision improved students' relative clause skills, but peer revision led to greater gains in comprehension and production. The findings suggest peer revision may be a beneficial supplement to teacher revision for language learners.
