This is a slightly modified version of my presentation at Bar Camp Canberra #3. It's been modified to include a few more on-screen notes and a page of suggested resources from the bar camp attendees.
I also ran a mini exercise to explain the Forer and Barnum effect. This was based on psychologist Bertram R. Forer's experiment (versions of which has been run by James Randi and many others). The wording of the exercise was from http://skepdic.com/forer.html.
The term 'quirkology' was coined by Professor Richard Wiseman (@RichardWiseman) who does some awesome stuff (like his book Quirkology and his tv series, The People Watchers).

During the actual presentation, I ran an exercise based upon psychologist Bertram R. Forer's experiments (also carried out by James Randi and other folks). Refer to http://www.skepdic.com/forer.html for the words I used in the presentation.
Also please note that the term 'quirkology' was coined by Richard Wiseman (@RichardWiseman). He's written a book also titled Quirkology. The book is a nice easy read - go check it out (particularly if you can get the book with the 'smiles' cover).

Research Methods Lecture 2.
See notes for this lecture, also uploaded on slideshare : http://www.slideshare.net/lenallis/research-methods-lectures-notes
This lecture series aims to cover the basics of research methods for undergraduate students. By the end of the series students should understand:
-Why research is important
-How to identify good and bad sources of information
-How read critically
-How to write clearly
-Quantitative and Qualitative research
-The basics of experimental method
The overall point should be for students to take the activity of research seriously, but also to be motivated to go and conduct research and engage critically with material.
The researcherâs blind spot: 6 cognitive biases we shouldnât ignore in researchRuth Ellison
Â
There are cognitive biases lurking everywhere in the research process. Cognitive biases are psychological tendencies that cause the human brain to draw incorrect conclusions.
We all want our research to provide reliable input into our projects and most of us wouldnât deliberately distort data. Yet, weâre human, and weâre all susceptible to many cognitive biases that can affect the outcomes at any stage of our projects. Biases is unavoidable, but being a good researcher is about understanding our inherent biases and how we can minimise the effects.
Distorted or misleading results can be very detrimental to a project. It can misinform the direction of a project, or provide false confidence about decisions.
This session will highlight five common cognitive biases in research, from recruitment, to the actual sessions, and the analysis and reporting of research findings. This will be illustrated with examples and stories, along with how we can minimise the bias.
Getting older? Tips & tricks for designing inclusive open source user interfacesRuth Ellison
Â
In 1911, only 4% of our population was aged 65 years or older. In 2011, this increased to a whopping 14% - that's over 3 million people! Until someone invents a way to stop aging, we need to face facts. We're getting older...and this brings about a host of problems when interacting with a website or product (small font anyone?).
Join us for a (occasionally light-hearted) primer on creating inclusive user experiences (UX). In this session, we'll take a look at what happens when you age, how it impacts your use of software and the web, and tips for including accessibility into your designs so that it benefits every one of varying levels of abilities. Oh, and the best thing? These tips also benefit you when you get older.
Ruth & Alastair (a wife & husband team), along with 138 other hackers, took part in the GovHack 2012 event held in Canberra & Sydney. The aim was to create the best mashup of open Government data sets.
Our team, Cranky Bot, worked on a physical visualisation project called "Climate Vis Jewellery".
We got an honourable mention for "Best use of Bureau of Meteorology data sets (temperature and rainfall)" and won the "Best Data Visualisation" for Canberra.
Thanks to all the Government agencies for opening up their data, the sponsors and for the GovHack organisers.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
