Rogue waves, also known as freak waves or monster waves, are large, spontaneous ocean surface waves that occur far out at sea and threaten large ships and ocean liners. Rogue waves can reach heights of over 30 meters and exert phenomenal pressure. While once considered a legend, recent testimonies and scientific research have confirmed their existence in all oceans of the world. Scientists do not fully agree on what causes these giant waves to emerge but are developing computer modeling techniques to better forecast where and when rogue waves may occur. Ships are being built stronger and satellites installed to monitor oceans for rogue wave activity.
