Breaking Down Communication Barriers in the Post-Enlightenment Worldmschannon
Scientists and companies generally do not know how to talk about "risk" to a concerned public. And organizations in general continue to act as if the world were rational, linear, and predictable, the legacy of the 18th century Enlightenment--the Age of Reason. New science has shattered those theories.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

benefit of vaccination is over-stated. She’s against
mandatory vaccines and a key member of the anti-vaxx

● Has published in Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry,
Immunologic Research, Annals of Medicine (peer-

She’s anti-vaccine.

“It doesn't even make sense that vaccines would cause autism,
given what we know about autism.”
Paul Offit, MD
Pediatrician, Immunology
He’s pro-vaccine.

Regardless of what politicians you like, I think we can all agree that emotions ruled over facts in 2016.
But the truth is, it has been a long time coming. We have had a challenged relationship with truth, specifically scientific truths, for quite some time.
Every group their flavor of unscientific belief. This is not to say they are equivalent beliefs as far as damaging impact and whatnot. But just to say that no one group has a monopoly on being unscientific.

I listen to a podcast called the skeptics guide to the universe. Each week, Steven Novella (a great scientific literacy advocate) presents 3 news stories, two true and one fake, to his colleagues on the show. They have to spot the fake.
Turns out, a study revealed that people performed better at anagrams and other related creative tasks when lying down. The hypothesized mechanism is reduced levels of adrenaline when lying down, which results in less inhibition of creative thought.
What’s funny is that week after week, on this podcast segment, the panelists perform poorly. They are very scientifically literate, and more importantly, they know the dynamics of the game! And yet they still perform not much better than chance.
Reason one we have a problem with truth!
Yeah so we suck at statistics. We think coincidences are profound when they aren’t. P-hacking. How can a study find something that isn’t really a thing?

*The study draws precise lines of philosophical approach, using the terms ‘communitarian’ and ‘individualist’ respectively.
I used to find such comparisons offensive. But now I see it as pointing out a true shortcoming - not in science, but in science communication.
Not as a dogma.
Visitors ask questions. Contributors submit arguments (hypotheses/predictions). Evidence is submitted (“gather data”). Arguments are refused, question answers change depending upon that evidence.
Valuing evidence that supports your position, often without questioning it, while simultaneously ignoring or being excessively skeptical of evidence against. A double-standard. Related to cherry-picking.

"Even if you are just the most honest, impartial person that you could be, you would still have a problem — namely, when your knowledge or expertise is imperfect, you really don’t know it. Left to your own devices, you just don’t know it. We’re not very good at knowing what we don’t know." (David Dunning)

The Overkill Backfire Effect
A simple myth is more cognitively attractive than a complicated correction.
When you debunk a myth, you create a gap in the person’s mind. To be effective, your debunking must fill that gap.
