Amphibians Humid Tropics

Tropical humid ecosystems in Sri Lanka are rich in amphibian diversity and endemism, with many species found only in these regions. However, these amphibians face severe threats, as only small fragments of their habitat remain due to deforestation. As a result, many species are now critically endangered or vulnerable. Conservation efforts are needed to protect remaining habitats, combat invasive species, and implement species-specific measures to prevent further decline of Sri Lanka's unique amphibian populations restricted to tropical humid forests.

2) Soil quality is important for agriculture but agriculture can degrade soil quality over time through erosion from plowing, deforestation, and overgrazing.
3) Erosion from agriculture removes an estimated 25.4 billion tons of soil globally each year, filling waterways and polluting them with sediment and fertilizers. Contour plowing, crop rotation, and no-till agriculture can help reduce erosion and make soils more sustainable.

Overview of nrcs cons info exchange with cuba
The Natural Resources Conservation Service conducted an information exchange with Cuba in December 2016. A team from NRCS visited Cuba and met with Cuban agricultural officials to discuss soil conservation, irrigation, drainage, and organic agriculture. They observed examples of soil conservation practices used in Cuba and issues they are facing related to soil degradation. The Cuban officials expressed interest in learning more about rainwater catchment and subsurface drainage. The exchange highlighted successful organic agriculture in Cuba including urban farming and small rice production.

Restoring wastelands case studies

Overview of nrcs cons info exchange with cuba
The Natural Resources Conservation Service conducted an information exchange with Cuba in December 2016. A team from NRCS visited Cuba and met with Cuban agricultural officials to discuss soil conservation, irrigation, drainage, and organic agriculture. They observed examples of soil conservation practices used in Cuba and issues they are facing related to soil degradation. The Cuban officials expressed interest in learning more about rainwater catchment and subsurface drainage. The exchange highlighted successful organic agriculture in Cuba including urban farming and small rice production.

Easily reclaimable wastelands can be used for agriculture by improving soil quality. Marginal wastelands can use agroforestry which plants trees and crops together. Jatropha plantations show potential for wasteland reclamation but farmers face challenges like lack of technical knowledge, long growth periods, and climate issues. The oil and press cake of jatropha have many useful applications.

This presentation for the Mekong ARCC project was given by ICEM’s Peter-John Meynell, Sansanee Choowaew, Nguyen Huu Thien and Jeremy Carew-Reid at the Final Workshop in Bangkok – held in March 2013. The presentation considers Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and Crop Wild Relatives (CWRs) in the context of climate change in the Lower Mekong Basin. NTFPs and CWRs are an integral part of the farming systems of the Mekong. CWRs are especially important to breed new varieties through genetic diversity. CWRs are the largest source for crop improvement and the richest source of diversity for adaptive characteristics.The presentation considers the increased market pressures on NTFP resources, the loss of forest habitat due to commercial logging and conversion to agriculture and the importance of protected areas as a last refuge for NTFPs and CWRs.

Emerging Issues Presentation Housing Development In Upstate
