Sarcodina move without using
flagella or cilia. They usually
use pseudopods, which are
temporary extensions of the
cytoplasm.
They can produce asexually or
sexually.
Sarcodina also use their
pseudopods to obtain food.

2. Genus Amoeba
Obtains food using
phagocytosis.
Does not have a definite
shape.
Amoeba proteus (at right) is
the most famous amoeba. It
is commonly bought from
science supply stores.

3. Phylum Radiolaria
Noted for mineral skeletons.
Sometimes resemble regular
polyhedrons, such as
hydrosphaera hexagonalis (at
right).

4. Phylum Foraminifera
Characterized by thin, net-
like pseudopodia that catch
food.

5. Amoebic Dysentery
• Amoebic dysentery is a major cause
of death in developing countries.
• It is caused by Entamoeba histolytica
and is spread through their
microbial cysts, which can be found
in feces.
• Microbial cysts are formed to
protect the amoeba during
unfavorable conditions. These are
similar to endospores, but the two
terms are not interchangeable.
