Write a 2 paragraph response paper for history of theatre class,.docxlindorffgarrik
Write a 2 paragraph
response paper
for history of theatre class, comparing and contrasting the Italian Renaissance and the English Renaissance.
Guidelines
:
a) show quality interaction with the question that indicates
thought beyond answers
covered in class (we are not looking for repetition of what we already know but your thoughts on the matter)
b) choose the best evidence from the course experience you can for your answer (course experience includes anything that involves your enrollment in this class)
c) utilize the best original analysis you can provide for your evidence
d) use the best word choice and grammar possible. It is a small amount of space, so make every word count.
Instructions:
1) Give your RP an interesting title. This is the place to be most creative in an attempt to draw the reader into your text.
2) You will respond according to the following template, numbering both sections:
Section 1. Summarize your personal and general experience with the reading, readings, performance, or concept involved in your chosen question (How did it make you feel? Did you agree or disagree with its ideas, characters, styles, or qualities? Did it resonate with anything in your personal life? Was it difficult or easy to experience and why?). Feel free to use an informal writing style and first person. [4-6 meaty but concise sentences]
Section 2. Provide an argument (i.e. convince the reader of your answer) in response to your selected question in one paragraph using the following organization. Please use this format or you will not receive credit for the assignment:
Thesis sentence
—the “thesis statement” of your paragraph or what you intend to prove, including all of the pertinent information that may be involved in answering the question (like the play or performance involved, your key terms, and your assertion regarding the question).
Lead-in sentence(s)
—one or two sentences that establishes the context for the evidence you provide.
Evidence sentence(s)
—the specific example or examples from the class experience that best helps you answer the question.
Analysis and Conclusion
—this is the longest part of the paragraph, explaining what the evidence means and how it applies to your assertion and other aspects of the question.
Use a formal writing style, and do your best to avoid first person. [1 paragraph—10-12 meaty but concise sentences]
3) You have only a small amount of space to make a lot of mistakes. Be careful
Every time you use the title of a play, like
Oklahoma
, it should be italicized. all caps or underlined.
Watch your grammar and punctuation. There is practically no difference between form and meaning.
Make your margins 1 inch on all sides and double space your text. Use 12 font, Times Roman.
4) Use action verbs (avoid is, was, were, am) and specific nouns (avoid that, them, those, there)
Vary sentence structure and length.
*Some of the plays that were watched in class are Inherit the win.

How to Write a Discussion Board Post
“Writing is thinking on paper.”
–William Zinsser
Discussion boards (or DBs) are a chance for you to confer with your colleagues outside of class
time. You will be assigned 3 DB posts in each genre, often concentrated around the beginning of
our discussion of the genre.
How to access the discussion board:
1. Login to Brightspace (brightspace.ccc.edu)
2. Enter our course site, and click “content” in the top menu bar.
3. In the “table of contents” menu at left, click “discussion boards”.
4. Each DB assignment will have its own forum. Find the name of the main discussion
board thread you want to post under and click on it to open that discussion board
assignment. Review the directions there.
5. To make your own post inside the assignment thread, click “start a new thread” (below
directions). Give your post a subject line that includes your name. Then enter your
response into the text box. When you are finished, click “post”.
6. To reply to someone else’s thread, click on their subject line to open their thread. Under
their content, click “reply” to answer their post.
Writing your discussion board post:
First, read the text! You may wish to read more than once, first as you usually would and
the second time as a writer, looking for clues as to how the story works.
Refer to the list of “things to consider” included in this handout (next page) as you
choose one interesting feature of the writing to focus on in your post. In addition to
those ideas, you are welcome to explore any other features of the writing that you notice.
o Our goal is to think about how and why the writing works. Why might the writer
have made the choices that s/he makes here? What purpose might this choice
serve in the story? Look for evidence in the writing to back up your claims, and
include at least one direct reference to the reading in your post.
o You don’t have to have all the answers; I’m just asking for your insight as a reader.
Any opinion you can justify with evidence from the text is valid.
Make direct reference to the reading at least once.
o This means either using a quote which illustrates your point or including a
paraphrase-style reference, in your own words, to a specific part of the reading.
o Any use of quoted material must be in “quotation marks”.
o Don’t forget to give credit to the author of the quote! When mentioning authors,
use their full names or last names only. (If you’re responding to “Three Pokes of a
Thistle”, for example, you can attribute your quote to Naomi Shihab Nye or Nye,
but don’t call her just “Naomi”).
Ritt/241
Examples of things to consider:
The author’s voice/tone (as evident in the piece)
The choice to use a stylistic device (e.g. use of segments, fantastical elements,
descriptive passages, etc—stick with something you’re comfortable observing here)
Sentence rhythms or punctuation choic.

Amir s motivation_team_project
1. The Kite Runner:
Amir as a Complex Character
Analyzing motivations and conflicts
in a complex literary character
2. Characters are People
“When writing a novel a writer should create
living people; people not characters. A character
is a caricature.” -- Ernest Hemingway
What causes people to be who they are?
3. Why does Amir allow
Hassan to be raped?
• Complexity -- more than one possibility.
• Three possible arguments to Amir’s motivation to
allow Hassan, his best friend, to be raped.
– Argument #1: Amir is influenced by the cultural
setting of the novel.
– Argument #2: Amir’s difficult relationship to Baba
causes him to abandon Hassan.
– Argument #3: Amir’s personality traits as a person
cause him to do nothing to help Hassan.
4. Objective
• To understand that characters are people.
• To understand that complex characters, like
people, may have multiple motivations and
conflicts which influence their behaviors.
• To apply notions of argument, textual support,
and insight.
5. Assignment Details
• Create a PowerPoint that justifies one of the
motivations that caused Amir to allow Hassan to be
raped.
• To accomplish this goal, the following will need to be
done:
1) Refine the argument given to your team for
accuracy and specificity.
2) Include three of the best textual supports from
the novel. At least one textual support must
come from after the rape scene in Chapter 7.
6. Assignment Details (continued)
3) Identify the impact and effect of literary
elements that are present within the textual
supports
4) Include insight for each textual support.
This should be embedded in the slide as
voice-over. Thus, the slide shows will not
be “presented” in class, but watched and
listened to electronically.
7. Assignment Details (continued)
5) The file should be saved in the following
manner depending upon which motivation
and team number you are assigned:
Amir’s Motivation – Setting Team #
Amir’s Motivation – Baba Team #
Amir‘s Motivation – Himself Team #
Example:
Amir’s Motivation – Setting Team 2

textual supports!
15. Question: Why does Mrs. Mallard die when she sees
her husband at the end of the novel?
Given Argument
Mrs. Mallard dies because she felt stifled in her
marriage.
16. Given Argument:
Mrs. Mallard dies from disappointment.
Team’s Revised Argument
Mrs. Mallard felt stifled in her marriage, and had
awakened to the notion of possibility that her life
would have as a widow. However, the dejection from
seeing her husband crushes this possibility and is too
much for her to bear.
17. Best Textual Support #1:
Limited Point of View, Direct Characterization, Diction
“She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines
bespoke repression and even a certain strength.”
Literary Techniques
• Limited 3rd POV provides direct
characterization as a woman “whose
lines bespoke repression.” Had the POV
been first person, this characterization
would not have been possible.
• Denotatively, the word “repression”
refers to subduing by force, suggesting
that Mrs. Mallard has had to repress
her feelings.
