Boys Underachievement: Contextualising ‘Gaps In Educational AttainmentMike Blamires
Dr Steve Strand presented some of his findings from the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (2007) in order to explore Boys' underachievement: Contextualising ‘gaps' in educational attainment. His research has shown the attainment gap at age 16, in terms of gender, ethnic group and socio-economic class, to be in inverse rank to the extent of press and media attention (total points score 0.22, 0.61 and 1.29 respectively). However, the interaction effects of these variables are significant (e.g. the gender gap is much larger for Black Caribbean and Bangladeshi pupils than for White British pupils), and call for more "nuanced interpretations"; care also needs to be taken not to over-generalise to the individual. http://www.ttrb.ac.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?ContentId=15098

Private schools in India - more learning, more inequality?Young Lives Oxford
Private unaided schools have higher test scores and add more educational value than other school types. However, they tend to serve more advantaged students from wealthier families with higher levels of education. Not all private schools are equally effective - those charging higher fees, located in urban areas, and larger in size achieve better learning outcomes. While private unaided schools may provide better education, this disproportionately benefits higher ability and more advantaged children, raising concerns about inequality of opportunity. Prior academic achievement remains the strongest determinant of learning, indicating performance gaps emerge early in students' schooling.

The document discusses the biblical account of creation according to Genesis. It describes how God created the earth and everything in it over six days, resting on the seventh day. On each day God created: the light on the first day, the sky on the second day, land and plants on the third day, stars and sun on the fourth day, sea creatures and birds on the fifth day, and land animals and mankind, made in God's image, on the sixth day. The document asserts that God created the earth and everything in it and that there were no flaws in His creation.
This document discusses the dangers of compromising biblical standards and conforming to worldly practices in order to gain popularity or converts. It provides several quotes warning against lowering the standard of truth, conforming to tradition over Scripture, and uniting with worldly customs. Compromising the gospel message and adopting pagan practices is what led to the apostasy and corruption of the early church. True conversion comes through preaching repentance from sin and elevation to Christlike standards, not by accommodating sin. Faithfulness to God and his word should be the highest priority, over seeking popularity or victory.

Natural remedies mentioned include figs, clay, charcoal and medicinal herbs. God works through the natural laws of health to heal when individuals cooperate with Him by practicing prevention through healthy habits and trusting Him to restore health.

The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
2. School questions
What are the right benchmarks?
◦ Comparison of Amesbury’s MCAS to surrounding towns are frequently used
◦ Shouldn’t we comparable to demographically comparable communities?
◦ Do you believe demographics have an impact on what the standardized test measures?
What are the true budget drivers
◦ Do we know the rate of increase on budget on SPED as a percentage of the Amesbury budget?
3. Strong investments in schools is showing results
Amesbury has increased investment in schools over the last 8 years
This investment has led to steady gains against state averages
Amesbury Elementary schools had the highest MCAS scores in the area for the last two years
This is up from the bottom scores in the area in 2007
A strong start will lead to continued excellence as students move the grades.
For example - Last years 5th grade had the highest % of Advanced scores in the area on last
year’s MCAS
4. Analysis Approach
•It is important to look at MCAS as one piece of data. There are other feedback
measures to support planning and improvement across all student groups.
• It is critical to look at details:
• the specifics of various subgroup performance against each specific goals.
• The performance of a class (cohort) as they move through the grades.
• Performance by subject level
• A comprehensive approach is the best way to help our students reach excellence.
Thoughtful analysis will support better planning
• areas of excellence and specific areas or groups that need additional focus for
improvement.
5. Success in Middle School and High School starts in Elementary
Significant and steady progress has been made in Amesbury over the last
7 years
Amesbury has had the top scores of all elementary schools in the area the
last two years
This year’s 6th graders had the most Advanced scores in 5th grade ELA in
the region
All Amesbury schools have made consistent progress vs. demographically
similar districts
In 2013 Amesbury had the top scores vs. similar districts identified by the
DESE
6. Segments - subgroups, cohorts, high needs?
It is important to look at scores by segments and to follow trends over time by each category.
Segments are way to break down scores by different characteristics which makes analysis more
meaningful. There are consistent performance gaps between subgroups so understanding the
makeup of each population and how each group is performing relative to peer groups and goals
is important.
Segments where there are consistent performance differences include:
1. Gender – boys score lower than girls on MCAS – fairly consistent test gap
2. Income – Lower Income correlates strongly to lower test scores
3. ELL – English Language Learners
4. Race
5. Special Needs
7. Demographic overviews

Reduced Lunch 5.3 1.7 4.9
High Needs 35.6 21.6 47.9
8. Amesbury demographics drive improvement goals
Amesbury should look at each group when it is analyzing and planning improvements
Why this population difference is important
• Across all districts in the state Females outperform Males on MCAS scores
• In the 2013 test 24.6% Females scored advanced on MCAS vs. 20.1% of Males.
• Amesbury has a higher population of boys that will impact any simple comparison to districts with a different % of boys vs. girls
• This holds true for other subgroups – SPED, Low Income, High Needs, etc. where Amesbury has a higher share of students in those
groups than surrounding communities
• Looking at scores generically as the Daily News did isn’t best practice.
