Editor's Notes
Suppose on your vacation, you decide to spend some time looking through some of the nearby gift shops. Some of them are filled with lots of cheap trinkets,
But some of them are stocked with the wonderful creations of local artisans: sculptures, paintings, bronze and glass and stone. You marvel at the intricacy and creativity of some of the pieces – as well as their price tags.
As you browse, you find one piece you especially admire and ask the shop owner the name of the artist. “Oh, nobody made that,” he says. “nobody made anything in here.”
We had an explosion in the building a while back, and when we came in afterward, we found everything you see here just as you’re looking at it.” And instantly you suspect the owner is insane. Because you know that when you see a beautiful creation somebody had to create it.
The whole world was excited to see the amazing feat of the first space shuttle flight. We saw the rocket ignite and then the supporting mechanism fall away as the might power of the engine lifted the vehicle heavenward. We listened with keen anticipation to regular reports on the capsule’s progress as it separated from the shuttle and continued on its way through space. Radio messages from the astronauts and their detailed descriptions reminded us of the years of research and planning that had been necessary to build and launch the Columbia, thrusting it into space and safely returning it to earth. Had anyone watching the Columbia during her flight declared that the whole project was the result of blind chance he would have been labeled insane. At the turn of the century Napoleon and his army were on their way across the Mediterranean Sea to conquer the Egyptians. One starlit night a number of Napoleon's soldiers, products of the French Revolution and its rejection of God were trying to outdo each other in giving reasons why they know there was no God.
Napoleon, in his characteristic manner, was pacing back and forth on the deck listening to their reasoning, when one of them asked him what he thought of what they had said. He thoughtfully responded, “Very good, but if there is not God, then who made and sustains all of those?” and he pointed upward at the stars looking down on them.
That is a good question. Who made this world and the billions of stars, and who charts their course and keeps them in that course?
Many gods have been worshipped by people through out the ages. And people worship many different gods today;: Buddha, Shinto, Satan, the gods of the Hindus, and others. Their followers each claim that their god is the only true and supreme god in the world.
And many have been taught that God is not the Creator of all that we see. They believe instead in what Darwin taught – a theory called evolution, that teaches our children that the world came into being through a series of changes that took place over billions of years.
The theory of evolution teaches that once the first cell was formed then through many biological and geological changes this marvelous universe came into being. Blind chance and miraculous changes account for everything that we see around us.
Is it really possible that the world and all that is in it, including us, evolved over billions of years? Or is there a supreme being who created and sustains life on earth?
Revelation 14:7 calls us to “worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”
The very basis of our Christian beliefs is the fact that God is our creator and sustainer of life.
Our subject tonight is: Created for Glory

Jesus, the Word of God, was the Creator. God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit all had a part in the work of creation.

We are all well aware of physical light. But the Bible also speaks of spiritual insight as light. “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6)
Before man was created God provided him with physical and spiritual light. John says that Jesus “was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” (John 1:9) (See 2 Corinthians 11:41 / 6:14 and 1 Peter 2:9)

Earth’s atmosphere (firmament) is divided into 5 layers, each having varying compositions of gases. Man lives in the troposphere, which has a composition consisting principally of nitrogen and oxygen. God provided just the right mixture to sustain life.

God uses the sun as the measure of each day. “The evening and the morning were the fourth day.” The moon determines the seasons. “He appointed the moon for seasons; the sun knows its going down.” (Psalm 104:19)

“After resting upon the seventh day, God sanctified it, or set it apart, as a day of rest for man. Following the example of the Creator, man was to rest upon this sacred day, that as he should look upon the heavens and the earth, he might reflect upon God’s great work of creation; and that as he should behold the evidences of God’s wisdom and goodness, his heart might be filled with love and reverence for his Maker.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, Pg. 47).

Let’s look at some of the scientific evidence in favor of creation.
Earth’s atmospheric layers provide protection from the sun’s rays. “Without the shielding of the atmosphere, life could not continue on earth; it is more fundamental to state that without the atmosphere life could not have developed on earth, at least in the form in which we know it.
It is known, for example, that the sun emits high-energy radiations – ultraviolet and X rays – and that even more energetic radiations – cosmic rays – pervade space; these radiations kill living things. We know that they enter the atmosphere in lethal amounts but are stopped long before reaching the surface.” (Collier’s Encyclopedia, 1998)
The air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, with traces of other gases. If the air pressure or ratio of the gases that make up the air were altered, life could not exist. Is it not a great assumption to believe this balance could have evolved at the perfect mixture needed to develop and sustain life?
Perhaps the single greatest evidence supporting creation is the human body. The more we learn about its complexities, the greater our faith in the God of creation.
Consider how a tiny sperm and an ovum will not only produce a fetus that can grow to over 6 feet tall, but that specimen exhibits physical and emotional characteristics of the father and mother. Evolution offers no reasonable explanation for reproduction.
Consider the complexity of the eyes,
Darwin, the originator of the theory of evolution, was baffled when it came to explaining the complexity of the human eye.

Consider the delicate balance needed for blood to clot, or not to clot, depending on the situation.
And what about the brain and its amazing abilities? “The adult human brain is a 1.3-kg (3-lb) mass of pinkish-gray jelly-like tissue made up of approximately 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons. Its functions include; voluntary motor output, sensory input from all 5 senses, speech and vision centers, memory, coordination, elaboration of higher thought and emotions. All of these systems make up the most beautiful machine imaginable. Nothing is useless, no space is wasted, all of this runs in perfect rhythm with each system needing and relying on all the other systems for its survival.
Now picture the Michigan State University (MSU) library with its thousands and thousands of books. Each cell of the human body will represent a single letter of the alphabet. Start with a random letter from A to Z and now add a new random letter every minute. Keep adding a new random letter every minute until you have a total number of letters that equals a book. What are the odds that these billions of letters will form perfect words, and that they will be arranged to make a readable sentence, paragraph, chapter and book? Finally, apply this principle to all the books in the MSU library.
Another shutdown to evolution is the concept of “irreducible complexity.” If you remove one gear of a watch the entire thing will not work. All parts are needed.
This is the same for animals. If the lungs are removed, the animal will die. Again, all the organs need each other, along with mobility for the creature to feed itself, sight to see the food, and on and on and on. How could all of these structures, that are all needed for the creature to live, have evolved by chance concurrently?” (Greg Kadlub, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Lansing Community College) (Edited for space and content)
The questions posed by professor Kadlub are valid ones. In order to accept evolution we must believe in a process that would allow billions of cells to evolve at just the right time and in perfect sequence. Evolution isn’t true – it isn’t even logical.
There is tangible, scientific evidence to support the creation story, but creation is still beyond the realm of man’s ability to fully comprehend. But that is part of what makes God so awesome. “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” (Romans 8:33)
Do you believe that a loving God created the heaven and earth, including man, who was made in God’s own likeness?
