founded in Shanghai, China in 1919 as American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU) ("History – Insurance

across the globe, while relocating their headquarters to New York City from China. As of today, AIG

Another financial vehicle that could be problematic was CDS (credit default swap). CDS is a
financial derivative works like insurance on securities. The underwriter is obligated to pay a pre–
determined fee to counterparty if a certain security default. In return, underwriters charge a fee as
compensation. CDS can be used to hedge against risks. However there are still some difference
between a CDS and an insurance contract.
The CDS does not require buyers to actually hold underlying assets. That means a third party can
"insure" against default risk that it would not bear the consequence at the first place. A financial
institution can act like an insurance company by selling CDSs. American International Group (AIG)
was the largest CDS underwriter during the crisis. AIG issued tons of CDSs because historical
default rate on bonds were so low that issuing CDS became a cash generator. They simply collected
the premium and never though of paying out anything until the crisis hit.
Another thing that CDS is different from the insurance is that an insurance pool can be much better

In this study, two groups of people will be given the same questionnaire to answer. One group will
consist of white Americans who were born and brought up in the USA. The other group will
comprise of international Asian students coming from countries like Japan, Pakistan and India. It is

the international student community of the Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges. The participants
were undergraduate students ranging from freshmen through seniors, and included both men and
women.
Procedure:
Twenty questionnaires were handed out to the Asian students at the Five–College International
Students Association meeting in the Campus Center. The other twenty questionnaires were
distributed among the white Americans in the social dormitories of Amherst College.

for one, singular entity or person to blame. Managers of large banks, professional investors and
federal regulators have all been named as potential creators of the recession, with varying degrees of

In the lead up to the current recession, when the real estate market began to fall, there were so many
investors shorting stocks and securitized mortgage packages that were already falling, that the
market simply fell further. There were no buyers at the bottom, and the professional investors made
millions off of the losses of others. Beyond this, there was no real federal regulation for securitized
mortgages, since there was no real way to gauge the mathematical risk of any given package. This
allowed the investors to take advantage of the system and to short loans on real people's homes.
