How would you write a mixed methods procedure section for your proposal or study? Up until this point, we have considered collected quantitative data and qualitative data. We have not discussed “mixing” or combining the two forms of data in a study. We can start with the assumption that both forms of data provide different types of information (open-ended data in the case of qualitative and closed-ended data in the case of quantitative). If we further assume that each type of data collection has both limitations and strengths, we can consider how the strengths can be combined to develop a stronger understanding of the research problem or questions (and, as well, overcome the limitations of each). In a sense, more insight into a problem is to be gained from mixing or integration of the quantitative and qualitative data. This “mixing” or integrating of data, it can be argued, provides a stronger understanding of the problem or question than either by itself. Mixed methods research, therefore, is simply “mining” the databases more by integrating them. This idea is at the core of a new methodology called “mixed methods research.”
Conveying the nature of mixed methods research and its essential characteristics needs to begin a good mixed methods procedure. Start with the assumption that mixed methods is a methodology in research and that the readers need to be educated as to the basic intent and definition of the design, the reasons for choosing the procedure, and the value it will lend to a study. Then, decide on a mixed methods design to use. There are several from which to choose; consider the different possibilities and decide which one is best for your proposed study. With this choice in hand, discuss the data collection, the data analysis, and the data interpretation, discussion, and validation procedures within the context of the design. Finally, end with a discussion of potential ethical issues that need to be anticipated in the study, and suggest an outline for writing the final study. These are all standard methods procedures, and they are framed in this chapter as they apply to mixed methods research. Table 10.1 shows a checklist of the mixed methods procedures addressed in this chapter.

In order to make decisions about the value of any research study for practice, it is important to understand the general processes involved in analyzing research data. By now, you have examined enough research studies to be aware that there are some common ways that data are reported and summarized in research studies. For example, the sample is often described by numbers of participants and by certain characteristics of those participants that help us determine how representative the sample is of a population. The information about the sample is commonly reported in tables and graphs, making use of frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Information about the variables (or concepts) of interest when quantified are also reported in similar manner.
Although the actual data analysis takes place after data have been collected, from the initial planning of a research study, the researcher needs to have an awareness of the types of questions that can be answered by particular data analysis techniques.

Ethical considerations for any study using human subjects must include consideration for consequences of conducting the research. Ideas such as “do no harm” and reflecting on who will benefit from this research study are of paramount consideration. The problem conceptualized should be viable and one that once solved could benefit stakeholders without disempowering others (Frost, 2011). Also there are important logistics of informed consent and confidentiality of participants. The individual giving informed consent should be of sound mind/body in order to understand the nature of what giving consent means. Limits of confidentiality need to be considered by those handling data as well as by participants so that any unnecessary exposure or handling of sensitive/confidential material is minimized.
Guidelines for ethical considerations are given by APA(2010) and include 5 major principles: (1) beneficence and non-maleficence, (2)fidelity and responsibility, (3) integrity, (4) justice and (5) respect people’s rights and dignity.
Explain any concerns/uncertainties you have regarding ethical conduct during dissertation research.
Some potential concerns might be in the welfare of participants once a study has concluded. It could be that during a study, participants build a rapport with the researcher and as a by-product of creating narratives receive some stress reduction from expressing feelings, thoughts and behaviors with an “objective” party. There might need to be a resource that is available for referral if individuals participating uncover problematic feelings or events that are discovered or uncovered during the process.

In order to make decisions about the value of any research study for practice, it is important to understand the general processes involved in analyzing research data. By now, you have examined enough research studies to be aware that there are some common ways that data are reported and summarized in research studies. For example, the sample is often described by numbers of participants and by certain characteristics of those participants that help us determine how representative the sample is of a population. The information about the sample is commonly reported in tables and graphs, making use of frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Ethical considerations for any study using human subjects must include consideration for consequences of conducting the research. Ideas such as “do no harm” and reflecting on who will benefit from this research study are of paramount consideration. The problem conceptualized should be viable and one that once solved could benefit stakeholders without disempowering others (Frost, 2011). Also there are important logistics of informed consent and confidentiality of participants. The individual giving informed consent should be of sound mind/body in order to understand the nature of what giving consent means. Limits of confidentiality need to be considered by those handling data as well as by participants so that any unnecessary exposure or handling of sensitive/confidential material is minimized.
Guidelines for ethical considerations are given by APA(2010) and include 5 major principles: (1) beneficence and non-maleficence, (2)fidelity and responsibility, (3) integrity, (4) justice and (5) respect people’s rights and dignity.
Explain any concerns/uncertainties you have regarding ethical conduct during dissertation research.
Some potential concerns might be in the welfare of participants once a study has concluded. It could be that during a study, participants build a rapport with the researcher and as a by-product of creating narratives receive some stress reduction from expressing feelings, thoughts and behaviors with an “objective” party. There might need to be a resource that is available for referral if individuals participating uncover problematic feelings or events that are discovered or uncovered during the process.
Other concerns could include the problem with the researcher(s) presence might influence results and observable behaviors. Concerns with cultural differences, gender, age and other demographic variables may also unintentionally bias data collection and ultimately results.
Finally, qualitative data collection might be unpredictable as it is a dynamic system that unfolds in the field with various sources, contexts and situations. Therefore, consideration must be made for handling dubious scenarios that might arise during this open and continuous process.

At the time of his arrest, John voluntarily began to make incriminating statements to the arresting officers. At the police station, detectives conducted an interview of John asking him about the theft. John Doe has had no prior arrests, is 35 years old, and most of John Doe’s family still resides in his home country. Due to the amount of money involved, the crime is deemed a felony and John was arrested and placed in the county jail in Toms River, NJ. He is going to face the judge in the Ocean County Superior Court; however, he has no money for bail.

The following case study presents issues related to procedures in a criminal trial and the roles of the major participants.
Case Study:
Jones, Walsh, and Bert have been arrested on suspicion of rape and criminal assault of a 14-year-old girl. As the police investigation unfolds they locate and obtain the statement of Bland, who provides them additional information about Jones. The evidence the police uncover reveals that there have been three separate assault and rapes of juveniles over a 3-day period.
The prosecutor in the case files charges against Jones, Walsh, and Bert for their acts. Bert hires an attorney to defend him. Bert tells his defense attorney that he did not commit any of the rapes and that he was only present one time with Jones and all he did was hit one of the girls. Bert explains that he can prove this because at the times the other rapes are alleged to have occurred, he was with Mook. Mook is currently out of the country on a mountain climbing trip and will not return for 2 months.
Shortly after the prosecutor files charges in the case, Bland contacts the prosecutor’s office and provides a written statement to the prosecutor that Walsh was not present during any of the rapes.
