ABSTRACT
We present a wearable interface that allows a user to
silently converse with a computing device without any
voice or any discemible movements-thereby enabling the
user to communicate with devices, AI assistants,
applications or other people in a silent , concealed and
seamless manner. A user’s intention to speak and internal
speech is characterized by neuromuscular signals in internal
speech articulators that are captured by alter ego system to
reconstruct their speech. We use this to facilitate a NUI and
receive aural output thereby enabling a discreet, bi-directional
interface. This deals with architecture, design, implementation
and operation of the entire system. We demonstrate robustness
of system through user studies and report 92% median word
accuracy levels.
4
Introduction:
 What is meant by AlterEgo?
Ans:
 AlterEgo is a wearable, silent speech system for silent
and seamless natural language communication with
computing devices and other people.
 It is a internal speech reading headset which lets
devices know what you are thinking through silent
speech without any voice or discernible movements.
 The wearable system reads electrical impulses from
the surface of skin in lower face and the neck that
occur when a user is internally vocalizing words or
phrases .
5
 AlterEgo is mainly seems to be enabling a
discrete conversation between person and
machine .
 Natural user interface: 1)It is effectively
invisible.
2) Humans can interact and control the
devices through their bodies by virtue of hand
movements or speech.
 To overcome the problems that are faced with
AI assistants this device is developed that we
can carry with us wherever we go which can
interact with inner voice.
6
What exactly the “silent
speech”?:
 Silent speech is different from either thinking of
word or saying word out loud.
 Silent speaking is a conscious effort to say a word,
characterized by subtle movements of internal
speech organs without actually voicing it.
 The process results in signals from your brain to
your muscles which are picked up as
neuromuscular signals and processed by our
device.
 No the user does not have to move his or her face
or mouth to use this system.
7
What are the components of the system?:
The AlterEgo system consists of the following
components:
 A new peripheral myoneural interface for silent
speech input which reads electrical signals
from the surface of skin that are then
processed to detect words a person is silently
speaking.
 Hardware and software to process electro
physical signals, including a modular neural
network based pipeline trained to detect and
recognize words silently spoken by user.
8
 An intelligent system that processes user
commands or queries and generates
responses.
 Bone conduction output to give audio
information back to the user, such as the
answer to a question or confirmation
regarding a comment.
 The device only reads words that are
deliberately silently spoken as inputs and
produces output based on those inputs with
the help of those components.

11
How does AlterEgo work?
 AlterEgo is a wearable headset which has seven
electrodes which acts as a sensor. These
electrodes are located around the throat region.
 It has a bone conduction headphones which
facilitate two way communication.
 We all know that the signals from brain reach
different parts of body as electrical impulses.
 The junction between two neurons is synapse and
propagation of impulse through this cause
potential difference and it is sensed by electrodes.
12
 This data is compared with pre-trained data set
(using AI and ML) and the particular trying to
communicate is identified by the device and
perform the require function.
 Two-way communication means that we can
also receive information from alter ego through
bone conduction headphones.
 These headphones rather than transmitting
sound waves into the ear are placed above our
ear and transmit the vibrations through the
bone, into the auditory canal and are interpreted
by our human brain.

14
How do we interact with AlterEgo?
 The AlterEgo model has been trained with certain
words and their corresponding neuromuscular
signals .
 We need to talk with ourselves in order to
communicate with it.
 The neuromuscular signal which is given as the
input is transmitted to a computing device through
Bluetooth and is analyzed.
 For example, if you think a question ,say , “what
is 14 times of 403?”, then it will understand the
question and give you the answer through the
bone conduction speakers in the form of
vibrations.
15

Interaction with AlterEgo device
16
Advantages:
 Alter Ego device is portable.
 It is relatively easy to use.
 It can also be used by disabled people as it is
controlled by their internal speech.
 It can also serves as a replacement for the
physical assistants like Siri and Alexa.
 Having an alter ego can make life more fun.
 It has a speech recognition accuracy of 92%
which is highest among other NUI devices.
17
Disadvantages:
 In this system conversation is interpreted
internally.
 There is eavesdropping problem in alter ego
systems.
 There is a problem of proximity it means the
commands will be interpreted better if we wear
it only.
 These devices are active 24x7 and not just
when we give them their wake-up commands.
18
Applications:
 The system allow user to control IoT devices and
it appliances without any observable action.
 AlterEgo, with a connection to Bluetooth speaker,
allows a user to internally vocalize a word and
then translates to a word in other language to
enable multilingual conversation.
 It acts as a digital memory where a user could
internally record streams of information and
access these at later time.
 It allows a human user to connect to internet, and
access the knowledge of web in real time as an
extension of user’s self.
 The system has wide range of possibilities and
implications in telecommunication sector too.
19
Conclusion
 To establish Alter Ego pros and cons is not
easily described because it is in initial stage of
development.
 Whether AlterEgo it is going to be a great
invention or not, is going to be secondary.
 It has succeeded in its primary aim of creating
an easy to use NUI and also integrating the
power of AI with the power of human brain.
