Alpers Syndrome is a rare, fatal mitochondrial disease that affects the brain and liver. The main symptoms are seizures, loss of developmental milestones, and liver disease. It is caused by improper processing of ammonia in the liver. Victims are usually infants and young children. There is no cure, and the prognosis is poor, with most patients dying within the first decade of life from liver failure or respiratory complications. The story describes a young girl named Hailey who was diagnosed with Alpers Syndrome and passed away at 14 months of age.
