ALO FINLAND CODING &
COLLABORATION LESSONS
CODING, COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION AND THE NEW
NATIONAL CURRICULUM
IT IS ALL ABOUT PROBLEM SOLVING
• IT is all about problem solving, capturing requirements and
communication. The person giving the requirements needs to
understand what is possible and what is involved in the build
process. Only then will they get what they want, in a time they are
happy with.
• In the future not everyone will be a coder but everyone will need to
solve problems and interact with a coder. Teaching coding to
children is about teaching life skills for the future. Coding is like
learning a language and is as important as any language.
21ST CENTURY SKILLS
• Through the effective teaching of coding children will learn
collaboration and skills that are far more than just IT skills.
Children will be well placed to be the business people, analysts
and software builders of the future.
• To do this they need great lessons to lead them through this.
That engage them in the subject and allow them to share their
experience with others.
PUPILS AS CODING AMBASSADORS
• Pirjo Suhonen, ALO Finland, has developed such a lesson plan.
This is innovative by getting children to teach other children.
• This not just teaches coding, it reinforces their own knowledge
but more importantly is delivered in a collaborative way. This
teaches team work that is important in all aspects of life.
FINLAND & FUTURE
• I have been coding for 20 years developing solutions for major
corporations. Many a problem could have been solved far
quicker by both me and the people I work with, having these
foundation skills.
• If Finland can provide these skills it can lead the world.
Senior Analyst Developer, UK.
