Alex Gainey learned to play the piano for his senior project. Through research, he found that learning music increases brain development and improves grades and IQ. His first lessons focused on basic notes and hand positioning. Later lessons incorporated playing with both hands together, chords, and full songs. Regular practice was key to improving. While challenges included time management and concussions, Alex saw benefits to his coordination and academics. He recommends continuing piano lessons.

Through research, he found that playing an instrument increases IQ and grades in children, known as the Beethoven Effect. He started by learning each individual note from A to G and practiced exercises playing notes with each hand separately and together. Music has always been an enormous part of my life giving me immense enjoyment. I began studying piano at the age of nine and at 14 was fortunate to achieve the highest Grade 4 distinction in Monmouthshire. From the age of sixteen I have given piano instruction to both children and adults.

Like rain showers breaking the silence of midnight, the thunderous applause poured over that final sustained-for-emphasis A-flat and me. My friends were whistling and hooting like they just heard their favorite song by their idolized music artist at a sold-out concert. I was all smiles. Although it was only my first vocal music recital at my new high school, my new friends truly made me feel celebrated. We were all artists, born and made from the same peculiar passion that drives us to dedicate ourselves daily to the perfecting of whatever it is we do. Family oriented by choice, there was a nurturing and supportiveness that was contagious among the students and faculty. This school required a rigorous two auditions and an interview with the principal and a senior faculty member from the students intended major. The end result, I shared the hallway with only 200+ students from grades eight through twelve. I have experience singing in Italian, Latin, French, German, Hebrew, and Spanish. Being a vocal music major with a minor in performance piano is what I have always done and was always perfectly content doing. Imagine the awkwardness when I found out that this small performing arts high-school was so exclusively “artsy” that for Physical Education credits, students are required to take Ballet Technique Level I to fulfill the requirement! I distinctly remember thinking, “This is going to be the biggest, longest, stupidest waste of time.”
Most non-dancers shared this depressing requiem. Over lunch the 16-year-old prodigy trumpet player laments how a dance teacher tried to make him stretch his legs open, “This wide!” with his arms outstretched like the crucified Man Of Sorrows. The Sophomore painter shows a doodle of the dizzying stars she saw when they tried to teach her to just spin and spin from one end of the dance studio to the other. A Communications student described his tragedy at Ballet I, as an event so calamitous it “should have been televised.” Clumsily dodging the other beginners as he fumbled through each combination looked less like dancing and more like these beginners had synchronized the ants in there pants. “Anti-graceful” was the agreed upon d.

Music is my life
If there is one word that can summarize my life and define its destiny, it is music. Every person on this earth was created for a purpose and I have a conviction that music was my reason for existence.
It was not easy being raised up in a middle class family. We had to stay with my cousins because their parents were unemployed and had no income. From the time I was young, I had been trained to accept and appreciate the little that came my way. It is significant to note that my parents were devoted Christians; thus, they emphasized appreciating the small things in life. Life in high school was not easy either and this led me to perform poorly in most of the subjects hence my grades were low. My parents were disappointed with my performance and they did not grant me free time to play. The reasons why my parents took these drastic actions were that the friends I was spending life with were failures in their own measure.
The confinement at home made me to have a self-search of my sole and it is when I realized that my talent was in music. It was indeed during this period that I later realized that I was wrong and that my parents were right. While I meditated, I thought of going back to school and start my studies with much exalted energies. At this time, I remembered the flute my mother had brought me. She plays piano for the worship choir in our local church and she is a great writer and composer of classical music. Whenever I felt low, I always played the flute and this cheered me up to a level that I developed immense creativity. During holidays, I teamed up with my mother and played music for the entire family. It was such a grand moment and everyone was filled with joy on such occasions. Every time I play the flute, I feel some sense of gratification which leaves me with much joy. Nevertheless, at no point had I thought of playing the flute or specifically music to be my future and only career had never crossed my mind.
It is true that music can be quite soothing and a good pass time activity that is not hazardous. As I started playing music instruments at a more serious level, I forgot my trials and tribulations for quite some time and I was able to experience a heavenly moment. However, my class teacher convinced me to go to the university and study music. I think as a mentor he had noted that I could make it in life if I concentrate in music. My application to the university in spite of my low grades was made easy by the awards I had attained in music under the guidance of my mother.
Despite the fact that my school teacher insisted that it was too late for me and that there was nothing that could be done, my parents were so inspiring. Back to the school, I started hanging out with likeminded brains and indeed realized that education was not as hard as I had previously thought. As I approached my second last year in high school, I was able to improve in my weak subjects and continued to perform outstandingly in music ...

- 2. Did you ever take piano lessons as a child?
- 3. Hello, my name is Alex Gainey. For my Senior Project I learned how to play the piano. I have always been interested and amazed by musical instruments, like drums and especially the piano.
- 4. Research Paper ► Formy research paper I found the commonality between learning to play the piano or any musical instrument and increasing grades and IQ. Statistics have shown that learning to play piano or reading music has increased brain development.
- 5. Research Cont’d The effects of learning to play piano and reading music on me were noticeable. I was more organized with my work and also I was managing my time better with school work and my job.
- 6. My expectations ► My first expectations of learning to play the piano were stressful to think about. ► I thought I wasn’t going to have the time to do it. ► Wasn’t going to be able to learn fast enough. ► Also worrying I wouldn't have time to practice.
- 7. First lesson ► My first lesson was very eye opening. ► I met at my facilitators house and we immediately began. ► I learned the first most basic note. Which is the middle “C”. ► Then I learned about the how the left hand plays the Treble Clef and right plays Bass Clef.
- 9. Second Lesson ► At my next lesson we practiced and went over what I had previously learned in the first lesson. ► I then learned to play with my right hand. This was difficult for me, because I am left handed.
- 10. Third Lesson ► I learned to play actual songs with my left and right hand at different times. ► My left hand I was very good at. But my right I was still having problems with. ► The first song I fluently learned was the famous “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.
- 11. Fourth Lesson ► In this lesson with my facilitator, she taught me to play with both hands at the same time. ► Trying to play both hands at the same time was very difficult. I would read a note and play something absolutely different. ► I would restart every time I messed up.
- 13. Fifth Lesson ► My fifth lesson I just kept practicing what I had already learned. ► I kept repeating hand exercises to help me get better with hand eye coordination and playing.
- 14. Sixth Lesson ► Inthe past lessons I was learning to play notes with both hands on piano, but it was time to move on. ► I was now learning a new a whole new concept. ► This concept was CHORDS. ► Chords are used to make the music sound smoother.
- 16. Seventh Lesson ► The next thing to learn was playing chords and notes at the same time. ► This was the most difficult task I had to learn. ► I have a disability that prevents me from being able to comprehend a lot of things to doing them physically.
- 17. Eighth Lesson ► Learning my song for my senior board presentation. ► This song is very well known. It’s the “When the saints go marching in”.
- 18. Key to successfully playing piano ► PRACTICE! ► Practice is the key factor to becoming good at piano. Repetition of notes, chords and songs is the KEY.
- 19. Challenges and Problems ► The main challenges I had was Time! ► At the time of lessons I was playing football and coaching a youth football team. ► So I had to prioritize my time wisely. ► I also suffered two concussions during football, so I was not able to make some of the lessons or even practice.
- 20. My Facilitator ► My facilitator is a teacher at Creekview in the Special Ed. Department. ► Mrs. Sue Ellen Turner ► She has over 40 years experience playing piano and around 15-20 years teaching piano to all ages.
- 21. I would absolutely recommend taking piano lessons and I am considering keeping up with this through the summer and possibly into college. Learning to play piano has totally changed my hand eye coordination and also has helped me in keep grades up in high school.
