Electronic Surveillance And Its Historical Context
The first part of this paper framed FISA in its historical context. The 1978 Act initially enacted
dealt only with electronic surveillance. It provided a statutory framework for collection of
foreign intelligence information through the use of electronic surveillance of communications
of foreign powers or agents of foreign powers. However, the Congress amended the act in 1995
and 1999 to provide a statutory framework for gathering foreign intelligence information through
the use of electronic surveillance, physical searches, pen registers or trap and trace devices,
access to business records and other tangible things. In sum, FISA grants broader authority than
the Crime Control Act, but under a narrower range of circumstances. To limit the abuse of the
Executive power that led to its passage, FISA also established the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Courts (FISC). The FISC requires the government to submit an application to obtain
a surveillance warrant to a specially appointed FISA judge. Moreover, since the FISA warrant is
secret, the government in order to benefit from this higher level of secrecy bears a burden of
showing that there is probable cause to believe the target is a foreign power and that the targeted
information relates to the ability of the United States to protect against spying or terrorism.
However, to address changing circumstances after the terrorist attacks of September 911, Congress
has repeatedly amended FISA to adapt to the fight against

Obstacles In Achieving The American Dream
A dream is not obtainable through waiting. It is obtained by many factors. With many dreams
come trials that must be passed. The main obstacles of the American dream include race, the time
period and dedication. With this world suffering from racism, race is a major obstacle in
achieving the American dream. Throughout history, it is apparent that whites have an edge in
obtaining the dream. This is because the major settlers of America were white. Also a majority of
the American population consists of white people. African Americans and Hispanics still have a
hard time in their survival let alone prosperity due to racism that causes them to need to work
harder for seemingly less pay. This type of racism occurs when the people in power seek to

Predictive Value Of Cardiac Troponin
Paper I: Predictive Value of Cardiac Troponin I and T for Subsequent Death in End Stage Renal
Disease
Fred S. Apple, PhD; MaryAnn M. Murakami, BA; Lesly A. Pearce, MS; Charles A. Herzog, MD
This is the study done by Apple et al, whose aim was to determine if an increased troponin was
predictor of death in patients with ESRD and it also proved prevalence of raised troponin t and
troponin i in ESRD patients. It is the largest study done till date on ESRD patients showing the
relationship with troponin t. Seven hundred and thirty three ESRD patients were studied in this
study, who were treated by chronic intermittent haemodialysis for a minimum period of thirty days.
The personnel who were unaware of cardiac troponin results reviewed charts ... Show more content

The comparison was between survival rates of the patients with raised and normal
concentrations of troponin. Cox proportional hazard was used to determine the relative risk of
death both adjusted and unadjusted and 95% confidence intervals. Kaplan Meir method was
used to compute survival curves. After that summarisation if clinical data was done 733 patients.
It was founded that majority of patients had increased troponin t as compared to troponin i
irrespective of the cut off criteria used. Again regardless of the cut off criteria used one, two and
three year combined mortality rates were higher in patients with raised troponin t compared
patients having normal levels. Unadjusted for other risk factors for mortality, Regardless of the
duration of follow up, an increase of 2 5 times in risk of death was noted with raised troponin t
and 2 times with raised troponin i. Age, history of CAD, time since dialysis were identified as
independent risk factors according to the data. Whereas sex, diabetes, and history of myocardial
infarction were not found to be predictive independently. It was also found out that there are
increase mortality rates with mild, moderate and larger increases in troponin t. Based on pre
dialysis troponin t and troponin i concentrations this was the first study to determine short and long
term survival in ESRD patients. This also found causes for more elevations of troponin t as
compared to troponin i. Three different

The Horrendous Suffering Faced by Dave Pelzer
American author, Dave Pelzer, grew up in San Francisco with his mother, father, and brothers.
Dave s mother was not like a normal mother, Dave s mother, Catherine Pelzer, beat and neglected
Dave. Dave also had 4 brothers that lived with him and his parents: Richard, Ron, Stephen, and
Kevin. Dave s father lived with them, but was rarely home. While Catharine did not neglectDave s
brothers she did not deserve custody of Dave s brothers, because of her abusive ways towards Dave
(Pelzer).
Dave s mother, Catharine Pelzer, was the mother of Dave and his brothers and the wife to
Stephen. Catharine was an alcoholic, who was also mentally unstable, and who by no means
was in the position to care for children. Catharine neglected Dave to an extreme extent; many of
the things she did to Dave could have easily killed him (Pelzer). Dave was no longer considered a
child he was a slave, a child called it. Dave s brothers Richard, Ron, Stephen, and Kevin lived with
the family, but they were not treated the same way as Dave was treated. The brothers were
treated as any other kid should be treated, they would be able to eat with the family, play outside,
watch television, or do things other children would do. While their brother, Dave, was not allowed
to do any of these things. As Dave s brothers watched the abuse, they did nothing to stop it
(Pelzer). Dave s father, Stephen, was a firefighter and an alcoholic. In the beginning Dave s father
was home all the time, but as time went on

Were You Fired Due To Your Pregnancy Essay
Were You Fired Due To Your Pregnancy?
Federal and state laws protect the rights of pregnant workers and ensure that employers treat them
the same as all other workers and that their work affairs remain free of prejudice in all areas of
employment. Although highly publicized, pregnancy discrimination cases keep occurring by the
thousands each year. At the forefront of pregnancyprotection is the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (
PDA ) which amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ( Title VII ).
PDA prohibits discrimination against a job applicant or employee based on pregnancy, childbirth or
related medical conditions. This means that you may not be treated unfavorably due to your

It is also unlawful to harass an employee due to her pregnancy, childbirth or medical condition
related to her pregnancy or childbirth. Such harassment includes verbal abuse or insults and is
illegal when it reaches a level that is frequent or severe which creates a hostile or offensive work
environment. It also becomes harassment if it results in adverse employment decision either
voluntarily or involuntarily. In many cases the harasser is not only the victim s supervisor but also
may be a supervisor in another area, a co worker, or a client/customer.
PDA also allows disabled pregnant employees to take disability leave or leaves without pay if such
allowance is made to other temporarily disabled employees. Under the federal Family and
Medical Leave Act ( FMLA ), new parents (including foster and adoptive parents) are eligible for
12 weeks of leave to care for the new child. To be eligible, the employee must have worked for the
employer for 12 months prior to taking the leave and the employer must have a specified number of
employees. Additional rights under FMLA include the right to express milk in the workplace.

Censorship In Music
Music is an expressive, vivid form of art. The influence of music has a huge impact with every
age group in the world. When people think of music they automatically think of how it makes
them feel which most of the time is good. They don t comprehend the provocative lyrics or what
the song s meaning really is. People have become used to this insulting and offensive language
found on just about any song. Every song being released today contains some sort of graphical,
sexual, or explicit lyric. Today s graphic music encourages violence, degradation of women , and
influences young children negatively. First of all, censoring graphic, explicit, and sexual lyricsmay

Karen Dill, author of Violent rap lyrics make listeners more accepting of violence , states: Radio
personality Don Imus referred to a college women s basketball team as nappy headed ho s . Dill
also argues, ... many responded that the racist and sexist language was acceptable because the
type of language is used by minorities in rap music . Rap music has made their own image of
what women are in their eyes and this has caused others to treat females a certain way. Women
have always been portrayed as weak, feisty, helpless, property, and more. Females start to believe
this about themselves having low self esteem, not wanting to be in relationships, and thinking they
aren t good enough. In reality, they might not feel that way, but that s how they are talked about in
music so they believe they need to be that way. According to the author of The public should
criticize violent music lyrics, women are objectified, often in the most obscene and degrading ways
(Brownback). For example, Wildflower by Ghostface Killah had a very set way on how they
described women. The song is full of disgusting comments towards women calling her a bitch ,
stank hoe , dumb bitch , and a chickenhead hoe (Ghostface Killah). Ghostface Killah also brings up
him cheating on her and how he had sexual relations with her while she was bleeding. The lyrics
used in this song are meant to bring

Voyeurism And Fear In The Movie Peeping Tom
Helen s blind mother, Mrs. Stephens, in the movie Peeping Tom, plays a crucial role in enticing
Michael Powell s major themes of voyeurism and fear, and is the only character who is able to
bring a deeper understanding of Mark as a person and the humanity he hides deep within his
childhood.
Film scholar Linda Williams has observed that silent films in the early 1900 s often portrayed the
heroin to be naГЇve and figuratively or even physically blind. This rests on the concept of voyeurism
and objectification of women as well as the fact that women exist solely for the purpose to be
looked at and are not in the position to see for pleasure themselves. The true satisfaction attained
during voyeuristic activities is from the victim being unaware of being watched, making a blind
woman an ideal victim for a voyeur because of their inability to detect being watched. Contrarily,
Mark utilizes a camera with a mirror and a knife attached to the end of its tripod as a weapon.
This weapon is essential for fulfilling his goal of filming his victims in genuine terror as they
prepare to be killed. Mark does not kill Mrs. Stephens because even though he prepares to kill her
at one point, he realizes that she is unable to watch her own death due to her blindness, thus not
contributing to his film and experiment. This shows that Mark is not an ordinary Peeping Tom, and
that his voyeurism stems primarily from his childhood and the filmed episodes of his life that his
father directed. His perverted acts of voyeurism and violence are for purposes much larger than just
his own pleasure.
An important quotation in the movie is when Mark asks, Do you know what the most
frightening thing in the world is? and he answers himself with, It s fear. This shows Powell s
point that fear is manifested by the acknowledgement that fear itself exists. Through Powell s
definition of fear Mrs. Stephens is fearless because she is unable to ever see what is coming her
way, including Mark or her own death. The fear she is able to perceive comes from the fear of the
unknown or the fear that her presumptions that Mark is deeply troubled may be right. On the other
hand, Mark wants his victims to fear the coming death and his weapon pointed at

Adult Entertainment and First Ammendment Rights Essay
Adult Entertainment and First Ammendment Rights
The essence of the American dream stems from freedom. Before this nation was even called the

would be free to practice a religion that was not controlled by the state. Today, we find ourselves in
a constant battle with ethics, morals and values in the United States. Seeing that we are a nation

These people have the absolute right, based on the first amendment, to voice their opinions without
question, but to place a person at a disadvantage because they own a certain type of business is
against the foundations on which our nation was established.
Current laws in Seminole and Orange counties prohibit adult entertainment establishments from
being located within one mile of any residential area. Further, recent changes in county codes have
limited full nudity in Seminole County. Having instituted this law prior to the foundation of an
adult entertainment facility in the county it is fair to say that any business man would have equal
opportunity to commercial property that is within the boundaries that the law requires.
Unfortunately to better suit the growing nature of society residential areas expand quickly and
sometimes without regard to these businesses that were founded legally. Should these business be
forced to move because the residence moved closer to them or should the residences have foreseen
this matter before it occurred? In New York City, Mayor Rudolph Guliani believed that since
citizens moved into the area and the business were creating a public nuisance they should be shut

STUDY POPULATION AND CLINICAL DATA
This study is a retrospective chart review of 360 patients with definite or possible Infective
Endocarditis according to modified Duke Criteria [1 2] who were admitted to Detroit Receiving
Hospital and Harper University Hospital in Detroit from 2006 to 2014. Both hospitals are teaching
hospitals in Detroit, Michigan. For a patient with repeated episodes of Infective Endocarditis, one
episode was only included at our institutions. Clinical, microbiological, and echocardiographic data
of all patients with definite IE were collected using a standard data collection form.
Analysis of Data
Analysis of data was conducted using the SPSS software system version 22. In table 1, bivariate
analysis was used to compare IE patients who died during admission versus those who survived to
hospital discharge.
Continuous variables were expressed as means В± standard deviation (SD) and binary regression
analysis was used to examine the associations between a continuous variable and a categorical
variable with two categories. Categorical variables were presented numbers (percentage) and the
association between them analyzed using The Chi square test. Variables that achieved a P value
less than 0.10 in the bivariable analysis were included in the multivariable logistic regression
model to adjust the effects of any possible confounding variable. The independent predictors of the
mortality were selected using a backward stepwise.

Comparison Of Marvel, The Super Bowl And Gangnam Style
Marvel, the Super Bowl, and Gangnam Style. What do all of these have in common? They are

your brain. This leads it to become instantly recognizable. Nuno Roque, a Portuguese actor,
director, singer songwriter, and mime said that, pop is about speaking everybody s language. The
imagery and iconography we instantly recognize. When you can rely on things that the public

INTERACTION OF A HEARING IMPAIRED CHILD WITH HER

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Structure and Rationale of the Study
To communicate is to satisfy man s individual need for social, emotional, and human development.
Communication is considered a basic human need for people cannot not communicate. We all need
to communicate to develop our full potentials.
These potentialities, however, are being held up in the case of the hearing impaired people. They
are not able to develop their full potentials for their faculty of understanding is also impaired. They
have the special need of having other means of communicating. They are in need of a medium that
would help them express and communicate what is on their minds. Concisely, they need to engage
in communication activities that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People s beliefs and actions are largely influenced by the society. Hence, the hearing impaired
might have the same meanings as ours for we are all part of the same society. However, because of
the discrepancies on communication patterns and social interactions, there might be some
differences on what we see as meaningful to what they perceive as meaningful. Hence, the way
they perceive and learn symbols and their corresponding meanings may be different from or similar
to us. Their patterns of communication and realities might be different from ours as well.
Thus, the need to interpret the actions and beliefs of a person from the group of hearing impaired
would help us somehow understand their group in general and the effects of their impairment to
shared meanings. By interpreting the overt behaviors and actions of a deaf, explanation of other
underlying concepts on meaning making process and sign system formation (Denzin, Lincoln,
1994) can be provided. However, this study sought not to generalize the phenomena of the hearing
impaired population but to make the reader understand the phenomena as seen and described by the
researcher me.
Symbolic interactionism is the lens of the study for better portrayal and understanding of the
meaning making process. Symbolic interaction is perceived as the communication theory of human
behavior (Faules and Alexander, 1978) as it highlights the significance

The Spy in the Computer Essay
The Spy in the Computer
A study of how computer games, as a modern narrative form, draw on and develop the tradition of
espionage fiction.
The spy entered the computer a long time ago. During the Second World War, both the Axis and the
Allies used the computer extensively in code breaking and allied operations. And following from
these rather rudimentary forays, espionage through the computer has reached alarming proportions
even as other technologies have continued to advance. The focus of the present paper will, however,
be on something different. It will not be on real espionage so much as on espionage in computer
games. The computer game has continually been enriched by better narrative possibilities, graphic
interfaces and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conflict exists in both types of narrative: it essentially consists of overcoming obstacles and
moving forward to achieve a particular goal. Safety, of course, would mean the distance of the
player or the reader from the fictional reality.
The apparent similarity in even these factors, however, can be properly judged only after we have
analysed representation and interactivity. To use Crawford s definition,
A game creates a subjective and simplified representation of emotional reality. A game is not an
objective accurate representation of reality; objective accuracy is necessary only to the extent
required to support the player s fantasy. The player s fantasy is the key agent in making the game
psychologically real.
Even here, the game narrative does the same thing as the narrative of a spy thriller. But here I must
mention that Crawford s definition is slightly dated and does not take into account certain new
developments in artificial intelligence (AI) or in computer graphics and interactivity. The computer
game, now, is better able to respond to situations and has more emotional and non technical content
than it did before. Sound, and state of the art graphics (called in gaming parlance eye candy ), can
far exceed the effects created by the player s imagination.
Games, like stories, attempt to represent reality. But the essential difference between the two is that
most stories present events in

Not Lowering the Drinking Age
Bryan Blejski ENG 101 010 Ms. Abbott 28 July 2011 Not Lowering the Drinking Age Many
teenage deaths in the United States are caused in some way by the influence of alcohol; however,
many people still believe that the legal drinking age should be reduced to eighteen. This issue has
been going on for years, but the law has not been changed since the change to twenty one in 1980.
States have become stricter about preventing under age drinking, but teenagers have no problem
getting alcohol. There are many arguments in favor of changing the drinking age back to eighteen.
The facts show that drinking alcohol is too large of a responsibility for an eighteen year old to
handle. In 1980 the government raised the drinking age to twenty one... Show more content on

In summary, research supports the argument that the drinking age should consider the overall
perception of how successful undeveloped teens could handle alcohol. Those who want to see the
legal drinking age was reduced from twenty one to eighteen often argue that the legal drinking age
in Canada and many European countries are in the middle of adolescence, and argue further that
this lower drinking age has not resulted in the dismantling of the social structure (Heath 28). As
some scientists and social researchers have pointed out, however, drinking habits of young people
has changed considerably in recent years as the influence of American advertising and the
availability of U.S. products has spread (Heath 231). Although the argument that a lower legal
drinking age may be based on data from other countries, we must remember that the culture of
alcohol are different in many of these countries and should not serve as a valid basis for a
discussion of American matters. Once again, science and research should lead to an argument for
reducing or increasing the legal drinking age. Interestingly, on a cultural tone, in relation to the
argument against lowering the drinking age, the fact that younger teens are allowed to drink helped
researchers suggest that there is an increase in binge drinking, which have been associated with a
dramatic increase in harmful and fatal. accidents,

The Current Educational Reform Of Continuous Improvement
Statement of the Problem
The research problem. To properly construct a meaningful purpose of the big picture for this
reform, digging into past history is crucial for me to get a clear understanding. What was going on
in the American educational system that would warrant a reform movement? How did any reform
evolve? Why a gradual reform towards continuous improvement? These critical questions build my
case and bring meaning to the current educational reform of continuous improvement to research.
This chapter will provide a purpose as to why this study is needed.
According to Murphy and Adams, the major reform occurred in the late 1960s. The Soviets were

With the intention of making the necessary adjustments in education, there was an appeal towards
organizations that had been successful. As mentioned previously, our education system was not
measuring up and it appears that is when every. The business sector appeared to have been ahead
of expanding their performances; naturally, educators gravitated towards the use and adoption of
their proven strategies as a remedy. (Lloyd, Ramsey Bell, 1997)
As stated by Tyack and Cuban, reforming the public schools has long been a favorite way of
improving not just education but society. (Tyack and Cuban, 1995, p1) The push to reform schools
has been rooted in increasing student performance in the hope of boosting economy and to please
the citizens. (Murphy and Adams, 1998)
Up to the present time, The Baldrige Approach is endorsed by several school systems all over the
country. This approach provides a framework to identify strengths and weaknesses and allows for
necessary changes to take place as it relates to improving an organization. In education, its
effectiveness is not yet proven although there are several school districts that have attained the
Baldrige Award.
I would very much like to establish a need for this study. As the need is fully revealed, the role of

Italian Renaissance Essay
The Italian Renaissance was the rebirth of cultural antiquity between the 14th and 16th century.
The Renaissance is known for its style of art, sculptures, and decorative art. The art created usually
represented the Bible and the idea of individualism, along with keeping the original style of the
Greeks and Romans. During this period, artists such as Leonardo Da Vinciand Michelangelogained
popularity. Leoonardo da Vinci s most famous paintings include Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Michelangelo s creations encompass the PietГ and David. With these new artists came new

Primordial Soup Hypothesis: J.B.S Haldane was the scientist that was involved in this hypothesis.
This theory was presented in 1920. The claim made by J.B.S Haldane is that the building blocks of
life originated from molecules which were formatted in the atmosphere with no oxygen. This,

William Shakespeare s The Winter s Tale
Shakespeare s The Winter s Tale can be viewed as a tragicomedy that draws upon elements of As
You Like It and Othello. Similar themes of trust, love, treachery, infidelity and tyranny are found
throughout all three plays. While The Winter s Tale and As You Like It share similar happy
endings, Othello shares more concepts with The Winter s Tale, but ends with a much more tragic
ending. Both Leontes and Othellohave severe trust issues and accuse their wives of having affairs.
In these plays, both kings end up being incorrect and therefore produce really dramatic story lines.
In Othello, Iagoplants the seed of jealousy in Othello s mind, as opposed to in The Winter s Tale,
in which Leontes s own paranoia feeds this idea in his mind to the point where he orders his
wife and baby to be sent away. As You Like It is a play which encompasses themes of love and
issues of brotherhood and violation of primogeniture. The conflicts raised at the beginning of the
play are resolved at the end of the play just like in The Winter s Tale. Act V of The Winter s Tale
draws elements from the other plays when the truth is finally revealed about the innocent wives and
when there is a happy ending in the plays other than Othello. The main difference between these
two plays, is that Othello ends with tragedyand multiple deaths, and The Winter s Tale ends with
family unity and happiness. The Winter s Tale is labeled as a tragic comedy because the first three
acts of the play feel much like a

The European Union (EU) has introduced and enacted a privacy law that protects all of its
member countries citizens from both governmental and commercial misuse of citizens personal
data. Meanwhile, the U.S. has been busy with protecting its businesses (e.g. passing laws such as
DMCA, et. al.). Of course, that is not to say that no steps toward achieving a better privacy have
been made by the U.S.
On April 21, 2000, Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has come into effect[3].
This law states that no information about children under the age of 13 may be collected without
prior parents consent[4]. Theoretically, the law only allows the data to be used as described to
the parent. In practice, however, it does not prevent the operator (i.e. the collector of the
information) from using the data in any way they like so long as they mention the way of using
the data. The reason for that is that many parents do not read the agreement, and in some
instances, the child accessing the website is asked whether they have their parents permission, to
which they just answer yes without actually checking in with their parent or legal guardian. It is
partially due to those reasons that some companies have started overcompensating for the law; for
instance, AOL has disabled accounts for all users that have specified that they are less than 13
years of age[5]. Currently, the service is restricted to 13 and over users, which, as already

Socialist Party Research Paper
It would be safe to say that in a perfect world, Utopian Communities would be ideal. The Socialist
Party was fueled by the idea of Utopian Communities, in which communities possessed highly
desirable or perfect qualities. Is this a realistic concept? Most would say no; it is impossible to
create a perfect society, where there are no problems, as human nature does not allow this. People
would try to construct utopies on earth via ideologies such as communism. Communism, as we
know, is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in
which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities
and needs.
The Socialist Party would form strong alliances with a number of labor organizations, because of
their similar goals. In an attempt to rebel against the abuses of corporation workers, they believed

Pros And Cons Of The Ontario Sex-Education Curriculum
Recently there has been a lot of debate about the new sexual education curriculum being taught to
children from a younger age and how it will affect them. Some people say that children are too
young to be learning this information and then how they use it will be in a negative manner. What
frightens most parents is that they can raise their children as they wish, but have very little control
over what other people do with their children (Wolfe, D. A. 2015, February 28).The Ontario sex

Wynne has made the curriculum more explicit and more age inappropriate than before, and also
increasing the mentions of the Gender Identity theory, sexual identities and orientations (Rage, G.

intercourse. It is being presented in a way that students will interpret it as carrying no risk for STIs

HIV in an individual. The curriculum downplays the seriousness of contracting HIV, leaving the

Brick Making Industry in Bangladesh
Present day Status
Brick making is indispensable for the economy of Bangladesh. Though not formally recognized as
an industry, brick making is a significant economic activity in Bangladesh. The country s
overwhelming dependence on bricks is due to its lack of stones in any sizable quantity or other
alternative building materials at comparable cost.

Most kiln operators have a weak financial base, with limited or no access to bank financing.
Because brick making is not formally recognized as an industry, kiln owners cannot avail
themselves of the concessional loan windows of financial institutions for the SMEs. In addition,
most kilns are established on rented lowlands that cannot be used as collateral to access finance. As
a result, only short term working capital financing is available to kiln owners.
Impacts of Brick Making Industry
Brick production is one of the most environmentally and socially damaging activity in the industrial
sector. Despite the industry contributing to almost 1% of the GDP, the industry delivers more
social costs and benefits and thus major reforms are required in this sector if the industry is to be
brought at an advantageous level.
Environmental Impacts
The main environmental impacts of operating brick kilns, which are particularly evident for the
FCKs, are as follows:
Health. Pollutants from brick kilns contribute to health problems of the exposed population.
These include: (i) Adult mortality from cardiopulmonary diseases and lung cancer caused by
long term exposure (Pope et al. 2002); (ii) Infant and child mortality from respiratory diseases
caused by short term exposure (Ostro 2004); and (iii) All age morbidity resulting from PM10
exposure (Ostro 1994; Abbey et al. 1995).

Genetically Modified Genes And Cells
The defendant Monsanto owned a patent for Roundup Ready Canola, which contained genetically
modified genes and cells. This product was resistant to the herbicide Roundup, which would kill
all other plants. Monsanto issued licenses for the use of Roundup. Schmeiser, a farmer, never
purchased Roundup Ready Canola nor did he have a license to plant it, yet in 1998 his fields
contained 95 98% Roundup Ready plants. The issue before the court was the patents validity. Since
all parties agreed that the patent was valid for the gene, the process of insertion and the cell derived
from the process, the question was whether the patent covered the plant that is generated from the
patented cell. According to the majority infringement does not require use of the gene or cell in
isolation and there is infringement if the patented inventionis a significant aspect of the defendant s
activity . Also in question was if Schmeiser used the patented gene or cell thus infringing the
patent? The defendant was found to infringe the Patent by depriving the inventor of the full
enjoyment of the monopoly conferred by law, by planting and celling the seed without buying or
paying the licensing fee of the plant. In a 5 4 decision, the court ruled that genes and the cells that
contain them can be patented. The court therefore ruled that the patent protection extended to the
plant and that Schmeiser s activity infringed the patent, and Schmeiser was ordered to pay the
profits made from those

Neurotransmitters Function
A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance that is released in the nervous system at the end of the

Essay On Observation To A Classroom Observation
On Tuesday September 28th, 2017 I observed Mrs. Rosser s first grade classroom. Her classroom
is located within Donahue Academy which is located in Ave Maria, Florida. The classroom had a
total of 14 students. The children cover every basic subject everyday such as science, math,
writing, reading, and they also practice their handwriting. Since this is a Catholic school the
children also have daily mass along with daily religion studies. When I first walked into the
classroom the children were hard at work. They were all spread throughout the classroom sitting on
various rugs throughout the classroom working on their writing. The students in the class had the
opportunity to work alone or with partners. Mrs. Rosser was fully engaged with the students
when I walked into the classroom. She was chatting with the students about their stories and
helping them brainstorm in order to extend their stories. Mrs. Rosser promptly greeted me and
told me to make myself comfortable. She then quickly got back to helping the students with their
stories. I felt that Mrs. Rosser s classroom was set up efficiently. Her desk is set up where she has a
clear view of all of her students. Although when I was in her classroom for my observationshe was
never at her desk. She was up and moving around the classroom during my entire observation
period. The student s desks were all set up in the center of the classroom in clusters. The only
problem with some of the children s desks were that they don t face the front white board so they
would need to turn completely around in their chairs to see. Although it seemed that Mrs.
Rosser typically had the students come to the front rug in front of the white board while she
taught. That way the children didn t have any issues with having to turn around in their chairs. I
felt that Mrs. Rosser s educational philosophy was that she wanted to create a really amazing
classroom community. I loved how she referred to all of her students as friends. An example to
her calling all of her students friends, she would say, Gather around friends! Mrs. Rosser is one
of the most positive teachers I have ever experienced. I honestly wish I would have had a teacher
as positive as her when I was that age.

Use Of Lingustic Instruments For Object Oriented Analysis
Title: HOW TO USE LINGUSTIC INSTRUMENTS FOR OBJECT ORIENTED ANALYSIS
SUMMARY: In software engineering today day we are using this object oriented analysis in
many ways and in many places because it makes us easy to understand the code and the concepts
of the project. There are many theories and methodologies came to explain the object oriented
concepts to make it more easier to understand but the none of them explained the concepts of
paradigm in this document the authors came to overcome the paradigm problem. Actually this
object oriented analysis helps the developers to have a clean explanation and to overcome with
the problems faced by the users. Even though it s useful in many ways but it is mostly depended
on the experience of the developer that makes the organizations to use it slow and it is not use
repeatedly and its mostly depended on the experience of the software engineer only, to overcome
this problem the authors came out with the semi formula model which can make the organizations
to run systematically with object oriented concepts this paper discuses about the steps and criteria
to identify the key words of the program in object oriented method to overcome the textual

F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby
Elly Hunter

Honors American Literature

The Jazz Age
The iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, utilizes multiple songs throughout the
story. Fitzgerald s wok has become automatically identified with an American decade: The Jazz Age
(which he named) or the Roaring Twentiesor The Boom. (Fitzgerald, IX). The Twenties was a time
full of exploration of alcohol and music and the move from small farms into large cities. Since The
Great Gatsby is the defining novel of the Twenties, which have become trivialized and vulgarized
by people... it was necessary and useful to provide a corrective assessment of that era and
Fitzgerald s response to it (XI). I personally believe Fitzgerald did just that. The development of
Jay Gatsby s character is all about rebirth and reinvigorating yourself; even if these developments
are canards. Nonetheless, the tale of revival is a parallel belief echoed throughout the 1920s and
the novel. The Roaring Twenties were a period of possibilities and aspirations (X) which is an
influential theme in The Great Gatsby. In Echoes of the Jazz Age he wrote: It was an age of
miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire (X). During a
stage of such metamorphosis, one element survives Jay s coherent love for Daisy. This American
classic of romantic literature collaborates beautifully with a playlist of Jazz songs. Also, Fitzgerald
regularly mentions songs in the book. F.

The Debate Regarding Same Sex Marriage
The definition of marriage varies according to different cultures, but when defined broadly,
marriage is considered to be an institution common to all human cultures. In terms of legal
recognition, most sovereign states limit marriage to male and female couples (two persons of
opposite gender). Nowadays a growing number of countries (about 15) have established a legal
recognition for same sex marriage. While few societies have recognized same sex unions as
marriages there is a long history of same sex unions around the world. Various types of same sex
unions have existed, ranging from informal, unsanctioned, and temporary relationships to highly

People marry for many reasons, including: legal, social, sexual, emotional, financial, spiritual and
religious, but marriages is primarily a social stabilizer because it creates the only association able
to move forward our social heritage. Families (association of individual: the entity) are one of the
fundamental keys to understand life. Why, would you say? Well, because without living a family
life, without children, spouse, companions, neighbours and associates, it is impossible to
experience the renunciation of self for the good of others (love: not sex). A family (cultural legacy)
starts with the association of man and women and not merely with the association of individual
having the same sex, because family have a cultural heritage not coming only from past generations
but a legacy that can be extended to following generations for the betterment of the whole. Two
individuals of the same sex in a relationship cannot transmit anything further from their union
because they cannot naturally procreate. The preservation of self, means the preservation of the
individual, but when this preservation of self exists in a community (group of individuals: the
community: the state) the social group must also assume it and is therefore obliged to create rules
for the good and the sustaining of itself: the whole. As a single individual you are temporary within
a family, but the family and its culture (its legacy) will continue if children

Moon Phases
Have you ever doubted what creates the moon phases? It is known that its appearance evolves over
times. But why? The best method to understand the phases of the moon is to scrutinize the aspects
of astronomy.
First of all, we need to wipe out the most commonly held misconception about the moon s phases.
The typical reason given for the cause of the moon phases is that we are observing the shadow of
the Earth on the Moon! But it s not true. When the Moon goes through the shadow of the Earth, we
obtain a lunar eclipse. The reality is that the moon crosses through the Earth s shadow only
occasionally, so that can t be the reason of moon s phases.
The actual reason for the moon s phases focuses on two prime aspects: the moon has a round shape
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This phase is known as full moon because it becomes fully illuminated by the sunlight. This is the
one and only period in an entire month when the Earth s shadow is anywhere next to the moon.
The shadow of the Earth directly points towards the moon at this time. But the moon moves above
or below the shade and no eclipse generates.
After one week, the moon has crossed another quarter of the path around the Earth. It remains in the
third quarter position at that time. And the sunlight directly falls on the other fraction of the visible

Finally, after a week, the moon returns to the starting position, known as the new moon . Generally,
it moves above or below the sun, but it rarely arrives right in front of the sun, and we have an
eclipse of the sun.
So, it is prominent that the moon s phases are not produced by the shadow of the earth falling on
the moon. Actually, the shade of the Earth falls on the moon only for two times, when there are
lunar eclipses in a year.
There are apparently thousands of websites that reveal what creates the moon s phases. If you want

The Evolution of the Federal Budget Process
Federal spending is necessary for the economy and is essential to the accomplishment of national
goals and advancement. This is why a budget is needed, however, there is no actual process
mentioned in the Constitution that explains how Congress should do this. The Constitution states:
No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law;
and a regular Statement and Account of Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be
published from time to time. (U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 9).
This statement only says that the power has been designated to Congress. It does not stipulate how
to use this power nor does it give instructions for the budgeting process. Even as the role of ... Show

Prior to this, the legislative branch had no way to determine is own spending priorities and had
nothing to compare to the President s budget. The Congressional Budget Act of 1974 also created
several other instruments for Congress to use during budgeting. First, the Congressional Budget
Office was conceived to provide financial data to Congress. This financial data includes an
economic analysis of the President s budget and its own budget proposal for comparison.
Previously, Congress had no choice but to use information from the Office of Management and
Budget which was part of the executive branch. After the CBO was created, Congress was
liberated from its reliance on the information from the executive branch. Second, it also created the
House and Senate budget committees. These committees deliberate over the President s budget
using the CBO s report as a guideline. They then draft and prepare the budget resolutions for each
house. Once again, legislature was used to further define the government budgeting process. It did
not, however, include instructions as to how to achieve actual budgeting goals such as a balanced
budget or lowered debt. It has failed to set a reform to force hard decisions.
Conclusion
The separation of power doctrine as well as the checks and balances system have created a culture
of restraint between the legislative and executive branches. Each branch s initial instinct is always
to contain the

The Death Of The Winter Formal
It was late on a Friday night, just an hour before nine, which would mark the start of Northride
High s Winter Formal. While most students and chaperones were already arriving early, very few
still lingered at home; and only one hadn t wanted to go at all.
Teague, honey? Are you sure you don t want to go? I m certain all your friends will be there too,
and they d be very disappointed if you didn t join them. An anxious mother stood at the base of the
stairs, calling up to her sixteen year old son on the upper floor. Her husband brushed past her with
a photo frame, moving to hang it up while saying,
There s no point in bothering him, Samantha, you know he s not going to do something he doesn t
want to. I m not even sure he has a date to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He closes his eyes, a soft smile curving his lips; as if he were experiencing a pleasant sort of
feeling, personal to only himself. He didn t want to go to the Winter Formal simply because he
was a busy person who had complicated plans. They were loosely thought out ideas, so Teague
thought them more as sketches really; because, as he has read so often, even the most thoroughly
formed and built plans often went awry. So, he would try to compromise with what he had
already. He was overjoyed that his parents wouldn t be home for four hours at most, giving him
plenty of time to sneak out of the house unnoticed and into the backcountry woods around their
small town. He knew basically everyone would be at this stupid dance of his school s, so he wasn
t too concerned about any obstacles.
He sat up and scootched to the edge of his bed, sighing deeply as he considered the course of
actions to come. To say the very least, he was excited, though nervous at the same time. It was a
very unpleasant mixture of feelings that didn t boil over well in his stomach, but he supposed he
had to suck it up and muster what he d been praying to do since the end of Summer, when school
had started. Getting up now, he maneuvered to his closet and pulled out his jacket, putting it on
when suddenly he had caught a folder of papers in his peripheral vision.
Ah! I can t forget this, says Teague, taking the folder in his left hand while he searched around for
his bag with his right. Obviously he

The Central Theme Of Secrecy In Lanval By Marie De France
Some people keep secrets in order to keep the peace, to keep the happiness, and to keep others
safe. There are many people in the world who feel that keeping a secret is wrong or may feel
disrespected because a person is not being open and honest with them. Everyone has a different
perspective of the influence secrets have on people. Medieval author, Marie De France, wrote the
story of Lanval which tells the story of a knight who must keep his love with the woman of his
dreams a secret or he will lose her forever. Secrecyis the central theme of Marie De France s story.
The theme of secrecy in this story adds to the dramatic effect of passion that the characters share
with one another. This essay will examine how the theme of secrecy in Marie De France s Lanval
was an essential component to the story, how the choices made by the characters affected the plot,
and how secrecy contributes to the entire meaning of the work. Lanval tells the story of one of
King Arthur s knights, who is described as being brave, kind, handsome, and very... Show more

This story is focused around keeping secrets and what could happen if a secret is revealed. The
mistress wanted Lanval to keep their love and happiness a secret from the outside world because
she wanted to protect him. She knew what would happen if their love was not kept a secret and
she wanted to prevent the event from ever happening. This story presents secrecy in a way that
is considered good and true. Secrecy in the story was used to teach Lanval a lesson about the
pervasive world that they live in. When the mistress comes to save him Lanval learns why she
did not want the world to know about them. It is because she did not want the cruel and
unjustness of the world to be involved in their relationship in any way, shape, or form. Lanval feels
a sense of relief once he is rescued by his love he even responds to the rescue by saying I am cured

Persuasive Speech On Good Customer Service
Finally, the clock says 8:55. Only five more minutes until your eight hour shift, which honestly
felt more like twelve, is over. The store looks perfect and all of the housekeeping chores are
taken care of. As you are walking to lock the front door, a large family comes rushing in asking if
the store is closed. With a fake smile plastered on your face, you tell them the store closes in less
than five minutes, so they promise to be quick. Now their kids are running around and the parents
are ripping apart the T shirts you just folded. Being polite and helpful in these situations is hard,
and all you want to do is tell them to get out. Customerserviceis important, but it can sometimes be
a challenge. Still, there are a few key steps to giving goodcustomer service that can ensure that the
customers will have a positive experience while shopping with the company. The customers
should always be greeted when they first walk through the door. Do not yell hello before they
even have two feet in the door and do not whisper hello in an inaudible tone. Instead, warmly
welcome them to your store and ask how they are. Follow up by asking if they need help finding
anything or if they are shopping for anyone special. Nine out of ten people will say no. It s best
to leave the customers that don t ask for help or those who blatantly ignored you alone because
people don t like to be pestered when they are trying to shop. However, you should ask the
people that do say yes questions to find out what they like or to learn more about who they are
shopping for, so you can help them find something that will make them happy. Always be
enthusiastic when helping customers so they do not feel like they are a bother. If what the
customer is looking for isn t in stock show them alternative options or suggest stores that may
carry what they need. After helping the customer to the best of your ability, walk away so he or
she can continue shopping on his or her own. Greeting customers is the first step to give good
customer service, but it certainly isn t the last. I work in a retail store and almost all of the other
associates are also seventeen year old girls. We all get along and are friends outside of work. This

Reflection On The Treatment Of Prisoners
Our society tends to jump to conclusions and make assumptions of prisoners. Despite what they
have committed and how severe it may be they are still human. We look at them as if they are
inhumane because they are in prison. They still deserve some of the rights that they had before
being convicted. I m not saying that I am okay with the crimes they have committed but I am okay
with them having a little more of their basic rights. I think the treatment of prisoners should also be
reconsidered. I think that they deserve more time outside of their cells. Inmates only get a certain
amount of time outside which I think is entirely unfair. I also think that their visitation rights should
be reconsidered. As of right now they are only aloud to talk to their visitors over a telephone. What
if they have been in prisonfor years? I think they should get to physically visit with their visitors
and not just talk over a phone. Prisoners do have the constitutional right to enjoy contact visits
and I think that this should be reconsidered and changed. Prisoners do not get to choose the work
that they are permitted to. I also think this is unfair and they should be able to pick what they do
for work. In doing so, this will solve some of the problems of prisoners acting out and will result
in less cruel punishment of prisoners. There are things that can be changed that will solve a lot of
the issues that guards may have with the prisoners. Prisoners are not allowed to do many things.

Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Interlopers
Techniques in The Interlopers The short story, The Interlopers by Saki, tells of Ulrich von
Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym, Two hunters who were destined to be enemies since `before they
were born. Three generations ago, the Gradwitz family won a strip of precipitous woodland in a
lawsuit against their neighbors, the Znaeym family. The Znaeym s, in return, have held a grudge
ever since. On a stormy winter night, Ulrich and his foresters are out on the land keeping watch
for thieves, when Ulrich comes face to face with Georg. Before either man has time to move, a
tree comes crashing down, both injuring and trapping them. At first both Ulrich and Georg claim
that their men will be the first to find them and when they do, the other will die. But as more time
passes, both find their hatred for each other decreasing and they decide to become friends. Sadly,
after this miraculous event, both Ulrich and Georg are killed by wolves. Throughout the story, Saki
uses irony, foreshadowing, and characterization to hold the reader s interest. Foreshadowing is used
when Ulrich and his men are out patrolling the woods, keeping watch for thieves. The roebuck,
which usually kept in the sheltered hollows during a storm wind, were running like driven things
tonight, and there was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This short story was written in 1919 and is still popular today. This could be because it represents
that you should never wait until the last minute. If Ulrich and Georg had solved their conflict
sooner, instead of waiting, then they never would have gotten killed because they wouldn t have
wandered off to find each other in the first place. This short story teaches a valuable life lesson in
just 10 20 minutes. I would recommend the story, The Interlopers by Saki, to everyone who could
benefit from learning how to work things out and forgive instead of holding a

How One Simple Tree In William Shakespeare s The Tree
The big idea of my poem is how one simple place can have such an important meaning in one s
life. In this poem, I used the poetic device of Anaphora with the words The tree. I believe this
enhances my poem because it really emphasizes how meaningful the tree in throughout the
entire story and how no matter where the two boys are in their life, they both seem to find their
way back to the tree. Also, I used the poetic device of an oxymoron when I wrote alone together.
Using these words show that as young kids, Hassan and Amir didn t need anyone else, they were
best friends that all they needed was each other and one and others company. Another poetic
device I used was personification when I wrote the tree that learned and the names of the bark
split apart and went their separate ways. Using personification in this poem helped to show that
other people/things realized how strong the two boys friendship was and that they almost
became one. Also, I used the simile grew like seeds planted in the ground because this relates the
boys to the tree in the way that they come from a seed in the ground. This creates more of a bond
between the boys and the tree because it makes it feel like they are more of equals. Finally, I used
alliteration when I wrote, late loving lifelong... and this conveys multiple of the feeling Amir has
for Hassan. Throughout this poem, I used the ages of the pomegranatetree to relate the the ages of
the boys friendship. A quote that relates to the beginning of the poem is, One summer day, I used
one of ali s kitchen knives to carve our names on it: Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul. Those
words made it formal: the tree was ours. After school Hassan and I climbed its branches and
snatched its blood red pomegranates. After we d eaten the fruitand wiped out hands on the glass, I
would read to Hassan (Hosseini 27 28). This shows that boys friendship at the beginning and how
strongly they cared for each other. As the book went on the the tree aged, the boys friendship had
some turns for the worse. A quote from the book to describe the harder times of the boys
relationship is, We had picked a dozen pomegranates from the tree. I unfolded the story I d brought
along, turned to the

Mental and Emotional Development
Write an essay of approx 1,000 words about your understanding of the older child.
Include detail of mental and emotional Development.
Going to school marks a new horizon of a child s life at a time when he/she thinks they are ready
for the greater challenges. Children are curious about the use of letters and words to convey
meaning, and have the manual dexterity to hold a pen or pencil and begin to write.
Together reading and writing broadens the child s experience enabling him/her to learn more about
the world he/she lives in. Their mental ability allows him/her to understand the symbols of letters
and numbers and by manipulating these new experiences develop.

It is important for those caring for children that they are aware of the attitudes of others and offer
opportunities to the child to talk about this.
Praise means a lot to a child of this age as it would to a lot of other people. Efforts should be made
to recognise each child s special attributes.
Summary of Major Developments:
For 5 to 11 year olds: 1. Decreasing dependence on family and developing relationships with other
adults and children. 2. Becoming an active, contributing member of the family. 3. Learning how to
deal with strong feelings appropriately. 4. Learning how to reason and solve problems logically. 5.
Developing understandings of concepts such as number, time and money. 6. Adjusting to changing
body image and coming to terms with sex role identity.
Adolescence Mental and Emotional Development:
Adolescence has been charactised as a time of storm and stress, but many adolescents make the
transition from child to adult with relative ease and with little trauma either to themselves or to
their parents. It is not surprising that, while their bodies are so rapidly changing, youngsters
become quite preoccupied with them and wonder what they will become.
Girls see their first period as a positive achievement towards adulthood or a dreadful event which
signifies the end of childhood.
Boys fear to speak as their voice breaks or they are delighted as their facial hair becomes obviously
present. The attitudes displayed will

The Transformation Of Macbeth s Character
As Innocent flower, (Shakespeare 25) Macbeth begins to change drastically, developing a
completely new identity, his transformation is quite obvious as he goes from innocent to the
serpent under [the flower] (Shakespeare 25). Macbeth has no morality to govern his actions
furthermore. The soldier is caught going against his moral beliefs as he represses all emotions that
are caused by his actions in killing; consequently, the guilt that is accumulated inside of him begins
to take over, caused by the initial push which began his redevelopment. Simply stated, Macbeths
obsession in gaining power acted as a push causing his psychological state to spiral downhill.

that he is Letting I dare not wait upon I would (Shakespeare 29). Macbeth experiences a turning
point as he sets onwards to kill Duncan but is abruptly stopped as Banquo is unable to fall asleep
due to his thoughts of the prophecies and the weird sisters. Banquo asks Macbeth if he has thought
about what the weird sisters told him about the prophecies lately, but Macbeth lies and says he has

  • 4. Electronic Surveillance And Its Historical Context The first part of this paper framed FISA in its historical context. The 1978 Act initially enacted dealt only with electronic surveillance. It provided a statutory framework for collection of foreign intelligence information through the use of electronic surveillance of communications of foreign powers or agents of foreign powers. However, the Congress amended the act in 1995 and 1999 to provide a statutory framework for gathering foreign intelligence information through the use of electronic surveillance, physical searches, pen registers or trap and trace devices, access to business records and other tangible things. In sum, FISA grants broader authority than the Crime Control Act, but under a narrower range of circumstances. To limit the abuse of the Executive power that led to its passage, FISA also established the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Courts (FISC). The FISC requires the government to submit an application to obtain a surveillance warrant to a specially appointed FISA judge. Moreover, since the FISA warrant is secret, the government in order to benefit from this higher level of secrecy bears a burden of showing that there is probable cause to believe the target is a foreign power and that the targeted information relates to the ability of the United States to protect against spying or terrorism. However, to address changing circumstances after the terrorist attacks of September 911, Congress has repeatedly amended FISA to adapt to the fight against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main obstacles of the American dream include race, the time period and dedication. With this world suffering from racism, race is a major obstacle in achieving the American dream. Throughout history, it is apparent that whites have an edge in obtaining the dream. This is because the major settlers of America were white. Also a majority of the American population consists of white people. African Americans and Hispanics still have a hard time in their survival let alone prosperity due to racism that causes them to need to work harder for seemingly less pay. Cox proportional hazard was used to determine the relative risk of death both adjusted and unadjusted and 95% confidence intervals. Kaplan Meir method was used to compute survival curves. After that summarisation if clinical data was done 733 patients. It was founded that majority of patients had increased troponin t as compared to troponin i irrespective of the cut off criteria used. Again regardless of the cut off criteria used one, two and three year combined mortality rates were higher in patients with raised troponin t compared patients having normal levels. Unadjusted for other risk factors for mortality, Regardless of the duration of follow up, an increase of 2 5 times in risk of death was noted with raised troponin t and 2 times with raised troponin i. Age, history of CAD, time since dialysis were identified as independent risk factors according to the data. Whereas sex, diabetes, and history of myocardial infarction were not found to be predictive independently. It was also found out that there are increase mortality rates with mild, moderate and larger increases in troponin t. When people think of music they automatically think of how it makes them feel which most of the time is good. They don t comprehend the provocative lyrics or what the song s meaning really is. People have become used to this insulting and offensive language found on just about any song. Every song being released today contains some sort of graphical, sexual, or explicit lyric. Today s graphic music encourages violence, degradation of women , and influences young children negatively. Karen Dill, author of Violent rap lyrics make listeners more accepting of violence , states: Radio personality Don Imus referred to a college women s basketball team as nappy headed ho s . Dill also argues, ... many responded that the racist and sexist language was acceptable because the type of language is used by minorities in rap music . Rap music has made their own image of what women are in their eyes and this has caused others to treat females a certain way. Women have always been portrayed as weak, feisty, helpless, property, and more. Females start to believe this about themselves having low self esteem, not wanting to be in relationships, and thinking they aren t good enough. In reality, they might not feel that way, but that s how they are talked about in music so they believe they need to be that way. According to the author of The public should criticize violent music lyrics, women are objectified, often in the most obscene and degrading ways (Brownback). • 12. Voyeurism And Fear In The Movie Peeping Tom Helen s blind mother, Mrs. Stephens, in the movie Peeping Tom, plays a crucial role in enticing Michael Powell s major themes of voyeurism and fear, and is the only character who is able to bring a deeper understanding of Mark as a person and the humanity he hides deep within his childhood. Film scholar Linda Williams has observed that silent films in the early 1900 s often portrayed the heroin to be naГЇve and figuratively or even physically blind. This rests on the concept of voyeurism and objectification of women as well as the fact that women exist solely for the purpose to be looked at and are not in the position to see for pleasure themselves. The true satisfaction attained during voyeuristic activities is from the victim being unaware of being watched, making a blind woman an ideal victim for a voyeur because of their inability to detect being watched. Contrarily, Mark utilizes a camera with a mirror and a knife attached to the end of its tripod as a weapon. This weapon is essential for fulfilling his goal of filming his victims in genuine terror as they prepare to be killed. Mark does not kill Mrs. Stephens because even though he prepares to kill her at one point, he realizes that she is unable to watch her own death due to her blindness, thus not contributing to his film and experiment. This shows that Mark is not an ordinary Peeping Tom, and that his voyeurism stems primarily from his childhood and the filmed episodes of his life that his father directed. His perverted acts of voyeurism and violence are for purposes much larger than just his own pleasure. An important quotation in the movie is when Mark asks, Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is? and he answers himself with, It s fear. This shows Powell s point that fear is manifested by the acknowledgement that fear itself exists. Through Powell s definition of fear Mrs. Stephens is fearless because she is unable to ever see what is coming her way, including Mark or her own death. The fear she is able to perceive comes from the fear of the unknown or the fear that her presumptions that Mark is deeply troubled may be right. On the other hand, Mark wants his victims to fear the coming death and his weapon pointed at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, we find ourselves in a constant battle with ethics, morals and values in the United States. These people have the absolute right, based on the first amendment, to voice their opinions without question, but to place a person at a disadvantage because they own a certain type of business is against the foundations on which our nation was established. Current laws in Seminole and Orange counties prohibit adult entertainment establishments from being located within one mile of any residential area. Further, recent changes in county codes have limited full nudity in Seminole County. Having instituted this law prior to the foundation of an adult entertainment facility in the county it is fair to say that any business man would have equal opportunity to commercial property that is within the boundaries that the law requires. Unfortunately to better suit the growing nature of society residential areas expand quickly and sometimes without regard to these businesses that were founded legally. Should these business be forced to move because the residence moved closer to them or should the residences have foreseen this matter before it occurred? Study Population And Clinical Data STUDY POPULATION AND CLINICAL DATA This study is a retrospective chart review of 360 patients with definite or possible Infective Endocarditis according to modified Duke Criteria [1 2] who were admitted to Detroit Receiving Hospital and Harper University Hospital in Detroit from 2006 to 2014. Both hospitals are teaching hospitals in Detroit, Michigan. For a patient with repeated episodes of Infective Endocarditis, one episode was only included at our institutions. Clinical, microbiological, and echocardiographic data of all patients with definite IE were collected using a standard data collection form. Analysis of Data Analysis of data was conducted using the SPSS software system version 22. In table 1, bivariate analysis was used to compare IE patients who died during admission versus those who survived to hospital discharge. Continuous variables were expressed as means В± standard deviation (SD) and binary regression analysis was used to examine the associations between a continuous variable and a categorical variable with two categories. They are all instantly recognizable worldwide, even if they are all in different languages. Pop culture spreads like wildfire, seeing it constantly on your TV, your phone, news helps engrave it into your brain. This leads it to become instantly recognizable. Nuno Roque, a Portuguese actor, director, singer songwriter, and mime said that, pop is about speaking everybody s language. The imagery and iconography we instantly recognize. When you can rely on things that the public already knows, you re dealing with pop, I personally agree with Nuno s quote. Hence, the hearing impaired might have the same meanings as ours for we are all part of the same society. However, because of the discrepancies on communication patterns and social interactions, there might be some differences on what we see as meaningful to what they perceive as meaningful. Hence, the way they perceive and learn symbols and their corresponding meanings may be different from or similar to us. Their patterns of communication and realities might be different from ours as well. Thus, the need to interpret the actions and beliefs of a person from the group of hearing impaired would help us somehow understand their group in general and the effects of their impairment to shared meanings. By interpreting the overt behaviors and actions of a deaf, explanation of other underlying concepts on meaning making process and sign system formation (Denzin, Lincoln, 1994) can be provided. However, this study sought not to generalize the phenomena of the hearing impaired population but to make the reader understand the phenomena as seen and described by the researcher me. The spy entered the computer a long time ago. During the Second World War, both the Axis and the Allies used the computer extensively in code breaking and allied operations. And following from these rather rudimentary forays, espionage through the computer has reached alarming proportions even as other technologies have continued to advance. Conflict exists in both types of narrative: it essentially consists of overcoming obstacles and moving forward to achieve a particular goal. Safety, of course, would mean the distance of the player or the reader from the fictional reality. The apparent similarity in even these factors, however, can be properly judged only after we have analysed representation and interactivity. To use Crawford s definition, A game creates a subjective and simplified representation of emotional reality. A game is not an objective accurate representation of reality; objective accuracy is necessary only to the extent required to support the player s fantasy. The player s fantasy is the key agent in making the game psychologically real. Even here, the game narrative does the same thing as the narrative of a spy thriller. But here I must mention that Crawford s definition is slightly dated and does not take into account certain new developments in artificial intelligence (AI) or in computer graphics and interactivity. The computer game, now, is better able to respond to situations and has more emotional and non technical content than it did before. Sound, and state of the art graphics (called in gaming parlance eye candy ), can far exceed the effects created by the player s imagination. Games, like stories, attempt to represent reality. This issue has been going on for years, but the law has not been changed since the change to twenty one in 1980. States have become stricter about preventing under age drinking, but teenagers have no problem getting alcohol. There are many arguments in favor of changing the drinking age back to eighteen. The facts show that drinking alcohol is too large of a responsibility for an eighteen year old to handle. In 1980 the government raised the drinking age to twenty one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In summary, research supports the argument that the drinking age should consider the overall perception of how successful undeveloped teens could handle alcohol. Those who want to see the legal drinking age was reduced from twenty one to eighteen often argue that the legal drinking age in Canada and many European countries are in the middle of adolescence, and argue further that this lower drinking age has not resulted in the dismantling of the social structure (Heath 28). As some scientists and social researchers have pointed out, however, drinking habits of young people has changed considerably in recent years as the influence of American advertising and the availability of U.S. products has spread (Heath 231). Although the argument that a lower legal drinking age may be based on data from other countries, we must remember that the culture of alcohol are different in many of these countries and should not serve as a valid basis for a discussion of American matters. Once again, science and research should lead to an argument for reducing or increasing the legal drinking age. Interestingly, on a cultural tone, in relation to the argument against lowering the drinking age, the fact that younger teens are allowed to drink helped researchers suggest that there is an increase in binge drinking, which have been associated with a dramatic increase in harmful and fatal. accidents, ... Both Leontes and Othellohave severe trust issues and accuse their wives of having affairs. In these plays, both kings end up being incorrect and therefore produce really dramatic story lines. Of course, that is not to say that no steps toward achieving a better privacy have been made by the U.S. On April 21, 2000, Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has come into effect[3]. This law states that no information about children under the age of 13 may be collected without prior parents consent[4]. Theoretically, the law only allows the data to be used as described to the parent. In practice, however, it does not prevent the operator (i.e. the collector of the information) from using the data in any way they like so long as they mention the way of using the data. The reason for that is that many parents do not read the agreement, and in some instances, the child accessing the website is asked whether they have their parents permission, to which they just answer yes without actually checking in with their parent or legal guardian. It is partially due to those reasons that some companies have started overcompensating for the law; for instance, AOL has disabled accounts for all users that have specified that they are less than 13 years of age[5]. Schmeiser, a farmer, never purchased Roundup Ready Canola nor did he have a license to plant it, yet in 1998 his fields contained 95 98% Roundup Ready plants. The issue before the court was the patents validity. Since all parties agreed that the patent was valid for the gene, the process of insertion and the cell derived from the process, the question was whether the patent covered the plant that is generated from the patented cell. According to the majority infringement does not require use of the gene or cell in isolation and there is infringement if the patented inventionis a significant aspect of the defendant s activity . Also in question was if Schmeiser used the patented gene or cell thus infringing the patent? The defendant was found to infringe the Patent by depriving the inventor of the full enjoyment of the monopoly conferred by law, by planting and celling the seed without buying or paying the licensing fee of the plant. In a 5 4 decision, the court ruled that genes and the cells that contain them can be patented. Use Of Lingustic Instruments For Object Oriented Analysis Title: HOW TO USE LINGUSTIC INSTRUMENTS FOR OBJECT ORIENTED ANALYSIS SUMMARY: In software engineering today day we are using this object oriented analysis in many ways and in many places because it makes us easy to understand the code and the concepts of the project. There are many theories and methodologies came to explain the object oriented concepts to make it more easier to understand but the none of them explained the concepts of paradigm in this document the authors came to overcome the paradigm problem. Actually this object oriented analysis helps the developers to have a clean explanation and to overcome with the problems faced by the users. Even though it s useful in many ways but it is mostly depended on the experience of the developer that makes the organizations to use it slow and it is not use repeatedly and its mostly depended on the experience of the software engineer only, to overcome this problem the authors came out with the semi formula model which can make the organizations to run systematically with object oriented concepts this paper discuses about the steps and criteria to identify the key words of the program in object oriented method to overcome the textual description problem of the object oriented analysis. • 37. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby Elly Hunter Mr. Kelly Honors American Literature 12 April 2016 The Jazz Age The iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, utilizes multiple songs throughout the story. Fitzgerald s wok has become automatically identified with an American decade: The Jazz Age (which he named) or the Roaring Twentiesor The Boom. (Fitzgerald, IX). The Twenties was a time full of exploration of alcohol and music and the move from small farms into large cities. Since The Great Gatsby is the defining novel of the Twenties, which have become trivialized and vulgarized by people... it was necessary and useful to provide a corrective assessment of that era and Fitzgerald s response to it (XI). I personally believe Fitzgerald did just that. The development of Jay Gatsby s character is all about rebirth and reinvigorating yourself; even if these developments are canards. Nonetheless, the tale of revival is a parallel belief echoed throughout the 1920s and the novel. The Roaring Twenties were a period of possibilities and aspirations (X) which is an influential theme in The Great Gatsby. In Echoes of the Jazz Age he wrote: It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire (X). During a stage of such metamorphosis, one element survives Jay s coherent love for Daisy. This American classic of romantic literature collaborates beautifully with a playlist of Jazz songs. Also, Fitzgerald regularly mentions songs in the book. F. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Debate Regarding Same Sex Marriage The definition of marriage varies according to different cultures, but when defined broadly, marriage is considered to be an institution common to all human cultures. In terms of legal recognition, most sovereign states limit marriage to male and female couples (two persons of opposite gender). Nowadays a growing number of countries (about 15) have established a legal recognition for same sex marriage. While few societies have recognized same sex unions as marriages there is a long history of same sex unions around the world. People marry for many reasons, including: legal, social, sexual, emotional, financial, spiritual and religious, but marriages is primarily a social stabilizer because it creates the only association able to move forward our social heritage. Families (association of individual: the entity) are one of the fundamental keys to understand life. Why, would you say? Well, because without living a family life, without children, spouse, companions, neighbours and associates, it is impossible to experience the renunciation of self for the good of others (love: not sex). A family (cultural legacy) starts with the association of man and women and not merely with the association of individual having the same sex, because family have a cultural heritage not coming only from past generations but a legacy that can be extended to following generations for the betterment of the whole. Two individuals of the same sex in a relationship cannot transmit anything further from their union because they cannot naturally procreate. The preservation of self, means the preservation of the individual, but when this preservation of self exists in a community (group of individuals: the community: the state) the social group must also assume it and is therefore obliged to create rules for the good and the sustaining of itself: the whole. • 40. Moon Phases Have you ever doubted what creates the moon phases? It is known that its appearance evolves over times. But why? The best method to understand the phases of the moon is to scrutinize the aspects of astronomy. First of all, we need to wipe out the most commonly held misconception about the moon s phases. The typical reason given for the cause of the moon phases is that we are observing the shadow of the Earth on the Moon! But it s not true. When the Moon goes through the shadow of the Earth, we obtain a lunar eclipse. The reality is that the moon crosses through the Earth s shadow only occasionally, so that can t be the reason of moon s phases. The actual reason for the moon s phases focuses on two prime aspects: the moon has a round shape ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This phase is known as full moon because it becomes fully illuminated by the sunlight. This is the one and only period in an entire month when the Earth s shadow is anywhere next to the moon. The shadow of the Earth directly points towards the moon at this time. But the moon moves above or below the shade and no eclipse generates. After one week, the moon has crossed another quarter of the path around the Earth. It remains in the third quarter position at that time. And the sunlight directly falls on the other fraction of the visible part of the moon. Finally, after a week, the moon returns to the starting position, known as the new moon . Generally, it moves above or below the sun, but it rarely arrives right in front of the sun, and we have an eclipse of the sun. So, it is prominent that the moon s phases are not produced by the shadow of the earth falling on the moon. Actually, the shade of the Earth falls on the moon only for two times, when there are lunar eclipses in a year. There are apparently thousands of websites that reveal what creates the moon s phases. The Congressional Budget Act of 1974 also created several other instruments for Congress to use during budgeting. First, the Congressional Budget Office was conceived to provide financial data to Congress. This financial data includes an economic analysis of the President s budget and its own budget proposal for comparison. Previously, Congress had no choice but to use information from the Office of Management and Budget which was part of the executive branch. After the CBO was created, Congress was liberated from its reliance on the information from the executive branch. Second, it also created the House and Senate budget committees. These committees deliberate over the President s budget using the CBO s report as a guideline. They then draft and prepare the budget resolutions for each house. Once again, legislature was used to further define the government budgeting process. It did not, however, include instructions as to how to achieve actual budgeting goals such as a balanced budget or lowered debt. It has failed to set a reform to force hard decisions. • 44. The Central Theme Of Secrecy In Lanval By Marie De France Some people keep secrets in order to keep the peace, to keep the happiness, and to keep others safe. There are many people in the world who feel that keeping a secret is wrong or may feel disrespected because a person is not being open and honest with them. Everyone has a different perspective of the influence secrets have on people. Medieval author, Marie De France, wrote the story of Lanval which tells the story of a knight who must keep his love with the woman of his dreams a secret or he will lose her forever. Secrecyis the central theme of Marie De France s story. The theme of secrecy in this story adds to the dramatic effect of passion that the characters share with one another. This essay will examine how the theme of secrecy in Marie De France s Lanval was an essential component to the story, how the choices made by the characters affected the plot, and how secrecy contributes to the entire meaning of the work. • 45. Persuasive Speech On Good Customer Service Finally, the clock says 8:55. Only five more minutes until your eight hour shift, which honestly felt more like twelve, is over. The store looks perfect and all of the housekeeping chores are taken care of. As you are walking to lock the front door, a large family comes rushing in asking if the store is closed. With a fake smile plastered on your face, you tell them the store closes in less than five minutes, so they promise to be quick. Now their kids are running around and the parents are ripping apart the T shirts you just folded. Being polite and helpful in these situations is hard, and all you want to do is tell them to get out. Customerserviceis important, but it can sometimes be a challenge. Still, there are a few key steps to giving goodcustomer service that can ensure that the customers will have a positive experience while shopping with the company. The customers should always be greeted when they first walk through the door. Do not yell hello before they even have two feet in the door and do not whisper hello in an inaudible tone. Instead, warmly welcome them to your store and ask how they are. Follow up by asking if they need help finding anything or if they are shopping for anyone special. Nine out of ten people will say no. It s best to leave the customers that don t ask for help or those who blatantly ignored you alone because people don t like to be pestered when they are trying to shop. However, you should ask the people that do say yes questions to find out what they like or to learn more about who they are shopping for, so you can help them find something that will make them happy. Always be enthusiastic when helping customers so they do not feel like they are a bother. If what the customer is looking for isn t in stock show them alternative options or suggest stores that may carry what they need. After helping the customer to the best of your ability, walk away so he or she can continue shopping on his or her own. • 46. Reflection On The Treatment Of Prisoners Our society tends to jump to conclusions and make assumptions of prisoners. Despite what they have committed and how severe it may be they are still human. We look at them as if they are inhumane because they are in prison. They still deserve some of the rights that they had before being convicted. I m not saying that I am okay with the crimes they have committed but I am okay with them having a little more of their basic rights. I think the treatment of prisoners should also be reconsidered. I think that they deserve more time outside of their cells. Inmates only get a certain amount of time outside which I think is entirely unfair. I also think that their visitation rights should be reconsidered. As of right now they are only aloud to talk to their visitors over a telephone. What if they have been in prisonfor years? I think they should get to physically visit with their visitors and not just talk over a phone. Prisoners do have the constitutional right to enjoy contact visits and I think that this should be reconsidered and changed. Prisoners do not get to choose the work that they are permitted to. I also think this is unfair and they should be able to pick what they do for work. In doing so, this will solve some of the problems of prisoners acting out and will result in less cruel punishment of prisoners. There are things that can be changed that will solve a lot of the issues that guards may have with the prisoners. Prisoners are not allowed to do many things. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. How One Simple Tree In William Shakespeare s The Tree The big idea of my poem is how one simple place can have such an important meaning in one s life. In this poem, I used the poetic device of Anaphora with the words The tree. I believe this enhances my poem because it really emphasizes how meaningful the tree in throughout the entire story and how no matter where the two boys are in their life, they both seem to find their way back to the tree. Also, I used the poetic device of an oxymoron when I wrote alone together. Using these words show that as young kids, Hassan and Amir didn t need anyone else, they were best friends that all they needed was each other and one and others company. Another poetic device I used was personification when I wrote the tree that learned and the names of the bark split apart and went their separate ways. Using personification in this poem helped to show that other people/things realized how strong the two boys friendship was and that they almost became one. Also, I used the simile grew like seeds planted in the ground because this relates the boys to the tree in the way that they come from a seed in the ground. This creates more of a bond between the boys and the tree because it makes it feel like they are more of equals. Finally, I used alliteration when I wrote, late loving lifelong... and this conveys multiple of the feeling Amir has for Hassan. Throughout this poem, I used the ages of the pomegranatetree to relate the the ages of the boys friendship. A quote that relates to the beginning of the poem is, One summer day, I used one of ali s kitchen knives to carve our names on it: Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul. Those words made it formal: the tree was ours. After school Hassan and I climbed its branches and snatched its blood red pomegranates. After we d eaten the fruitand wiped out hands on the glass, I would read to Hassan (Hosseini 27 28). This shows that boys friendship at the beginning and how strongly they cared for each other. As the book went on the the tree aged, the boys friendship had some turns for the worse.
