Sports and data go hand in hand. In recent years, we have seen an increasing importance of using data to take strategic decisions at professional events, training for amateurs, etc. This monitoring is especially relevant in cycling, a sport where the innovations have often stemmed from Flanders. Many cyclists are riding with a plethora of sensors measuring aspects such as heart rate, power, location, and speed. The popularity of apps like Strava and Runkeeper shows the importance of sports data monitoring and the willingness to pay by users. The main limitation of existing cycling training apps is that almost all data reporting and analysis happens offline as a post-processing step. Real-time collection and analysis can therefore bring important innovations in the cycling world, especially for amateur cyclists. Another important cycling market is mass amateur cycling events such as the gran fondos (e.g., Tour of Flanders) for amateurs or recreational cycling holidays. The former attract ten thousands of participants, while the latter is one of the booming markets for the tourism sector. At these events, the lack of real-time data and ways to interact with peers makes the cycling itself an individual experience. real-time updates about friends’ position and performance can enable friendly competitions, presenting a business opportunity in a booming cycling event market where added experience is the key differentiator. Therefore, the imec ICON-project CONtinuous Athlete MOnitoring (CONAMO) aims to provide a real-time data-driven cycling experience, both during training and at mass amateur events. Two major technological innovations are researched in order to achieve this goal: * Mobile network layer based on a long range IEEE 802.15.4g wireless technology with the bikes as nodes to allow communication during mass amateur cycling events. This allows sending real-time sensor information from cyclist to cyclist up to the sync (e.g. a team car). Due to cycling events passing through remote terrain, 4G coverage is often insufficient and is therefore augmented by the multi-hop bike network. * Data analysis layer that is able to interpret the data in real-time to improve how amateur cyclists experience the race and training. This analysis can occur both at the preparation of the event and at the mass amateur cycling event itself. This is complemented by a living lab approach in which (i) through an ideation process, the actual prototype is further refined and (ii) a post-product validation of the project’s results to validate the willingness to pay and provide insights in the concrete business opportunities. The cycling training and mass amateur cycling event use cases are being used throughout the project to validate and evaluate the CONAMO technical contributions and developed into two complementary proof of concept demonstrators.

As common sense would suggest, weather has a definite impact on traffic. But how much? And under what circumstances? Can we improve traffic (congestion) prediction given weather data? Predictive traffic is envisioned to significantly impact how driver’s plan their day by alerting users before they travel, find the best times to travel, and over time, learn from new IoT data such as road conditions, incidents, etc. This talk will cover the traffic prediction work conducted jointly by IBM and the traffic data provider. As a part of this work, we conducted a case study over five large metropolitans in the US, 2.58 billion traffic records and 262 million weather records, to quantify the boost in accuracy of traffic prediction using weather data. We will provide an overview of our lambda architecture with Apache Spark being used to build prediction models with weather and traffic data, and Spark Streaming used to score the model and provide real-time traffic predictions. This talk will also cover a suite of extensions to Spark to analyze geospatial and temporal patterns in traffic and weather data, as well as the suite of machine learning algorithms that were used with Spark framework. Initial results of this work were presented at the National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Las Vegas in April 2017, and there is work to scale the system to provide predictions in over a 100 cities. Audience will learn about our experience scaling using Spark in offline and streaming mode, building statistical and deep-learning pipelines with Spark, and techniques to work with geospatial and time-series data.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade. The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization, population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different 'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the land. The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover. Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface, providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and diverse human activities. Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels.
