The topics covered in this session are, Airplane (fixed wing aircraft) configurations and various parts of airplane. A detailed list of airplane configuration is discussed with general insight about airplane parts.
Attention! "Gate Aerospace Engineering aspirants", A virtual guide for gate aerospace engineering is provided in "Age of Aerospace" blog for helping you meticulously prepare for gate examination. Respective notes of individual subjects are provided as 'Embedded Google Docs' which are frequently updated. This comprehensive guide is intended to efficiently serve as an extensive collection of online resources for "GATE Aerospace Engineering" which can be accessed free of cost. Airplane (fixed wing aircraft) configuration and
various parts
Presented by - Ganesh Natarajan S
Target Audience: Gate Aerospace, Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering Students, etc.
3. Airplane (fixed wing aircraft) configuration
Airplane Configuration:
Basically configuration is defined as an arrangement of parts or elements in a particular form,
figure, or combination. In specific the airplane (fixed wing aircraft) configurations are
considered for GATE Aerospace perspective.
Configuration Categories:
Airplane can be classified based on many categories
• Homebuilt
• Single engine propeller driven airplane
• Twin engine propeller driven airplane
• Agricultural airplane
• Business jet
• Regional turboprop
• Jet transport
• Supersonic civil transport (SCT)
• Military transport, patrol and bomb airplanes
6. Engine integration:
• Engine in nacelles on the wing or on the fuselage
• Engine inside the wing or inside the fuselage
Landing gear:
• Fixed or retractable gear
• Tail-wheel or nose-wheel landing gear
Landing gear integration:
• In the wing
• In the engine nacelles
• In the fuselage
• In fairings

8. Horizontal tail:
• On the fuselage
• On two tail booms
• T-tail
• V-tail
Vertical tail:
• On the fuselage
• On two tail booms
• On each tip of the horizontal tail
