Greece-Group Discussion de Beaufort
1. Compile a list of cultural, artistic, and political ideas, values of Ancient Greece that survive today in the
modern world. Also note how these things have changed. (at least 5)
2. The Ancient Greeks saw themselves as a “Progressive” civilization that embraced reason, self-
determination and civic participation (unlike the Persians). We might say they were the original
“Progressives” who turned away from old ideas in favor of the new. And yet the Classical Age of Ancient
Greece lasted only 200 years. This is in stark contrast to the “Conservative” values of Ancient Egypt, a
civilization that lased over 12 times longer.
What were the specific features of the Greek form of “progressivism” that lead to its fast
demise? (list and explain 2-3)
Applying this to the modern world, is change for the sake of change always a good thing?
What are some examples of changes that might have gone too far (if any)? (list and
explain 2-3)
3. The Greek Gods were the original reality tv Instagram celebrities. Myths of their lives were tawdry and
scandalous, often echoing familiar themes of fame, scandal, and tragic fall. Based on your knowledge of
Greek myth and contemporary culture, name 3-4 Greek gods or mythological figures and then their
contemporary avatars. Explain your comparisons.
