Adoption of banana tissue culture in Uganda still remains low despite the availability of policies geared to enhancing agriculture. A survey was carried out on 115 smallholder farmers in Central Uganda to establish the influence of agro-related policies in tissue culture banana adoption between January and July 2018. Results from the study indicated that 83.8% of the respondents were aware about the Plan for Modernization of Agriculture policy as compared to National Agricultural Policy (5.5%), National Development Plan (13.12%) and Agricultural Sector Development Strategy and Investment Plan (3.3%). Age, gender and education level all exhibited weak correlations in relation to policy awareness while generally, the study found out that awareness of the of the policies did not significantly influence farmer’s adoption of tissue culture banana in central Uganda (P>0.05). We conclude that most of the agro-related polices were on paper and minimal efforts were in place to enhance their awareness amongst small holder farmers. We therefore recommend that increased awareness of agro-related policies to the farmers as well as integration of farmer interests in policy formulation are paramount in order to achieve wide uptake of agro-technologies like banana tissue culture.
This research work examines the impact of technology adoption on agricultural productivity. It considers the south-west region of Bangladesh as the study area. Since most of the farmers in the study area are engaged in rice production, this study surveys randomly selected 60 rice farmers in the IRRI season of year 2015 through using a questionnaire. This study finds sufficient variation in frequency and degree of technology adoption in agricultural practices among the surveyed farmers. The analysis results indicate that farmers are adopting high level of technology in seed variety and irrigation phases, medium level of technology in land preparation, pest management and fertilizer application phases and low level of technology in weeding and harvesting phases. There is a statistically significant difference in productivity between high and low degree technology adopters. Education and land holdings are the statistically significant variables in determining technology adoption level. According to the study findings, a one percent increase in technology adoption leads to increase in productivity by 0.22 percent, holding other factors constant, and this influence is statistically significant at one percent level. Therefore, this study concludes that there is a scope for further increase in productivity through planned manipulation of technology adoption level in different phases of agricultural production.

The study was conducted with the broad objective of determining the level of adoption of sustainable
agricultural practices (SAPs) among farmers in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.
Multistage, random, and systematic sampling procedures were employed to select 160 respondents for
the study. The collected data were analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistics suitable
for each objective. The result showed that majority of the respondents were females who were married,
having a mean age of 43 years and mean number of years of experience of 17. Majority of them acquired
secondary school education while practicing Christianity and were engaged in the production of both crops
and animals (mixed farming), having mean farm size of 0.8 ha in scattered plots and mean annual income
of N71,400 which was regarded as low income. Most of the farmers were not members to any farmers’
cooperative society. The predominant SAPs adopted included crop rotation, compost manure, and use of
tolerant varieties. Furthermore, socioeconomic characteristics of the rural farmers were observed to have
strong influence on adoption of SAPs by the farmers. The constraints to the adoption of SAPs among farmers
were socioeconomic, political, and institutional. The null hypothesis tested using F-test was rejected at 5%
level of significance. Consequently, it was concluded that socioeconomic characteristics of farmers actually
influenced adoption of SAPs, though there were identified constraints that limited the level of adoption
of such SAPs which if mitigated will improve adoption of the SAPs. Based on the study findings, the
policy recommendations were that relevant agencies should ensure vigorous dissemination of information
to farmers on available windows to low interest rate agricultural credit facilities by the government; reform
in land tenure system should be facilitated to support adoption of SAPs; Nigerian agricultural extension
program should be restructured to reflect sustainable agricultural context and emphasis; and farmers should
be encouraged to seek meteorological information to minimize risks from adverse weather conditions. This
will encourage adoption of SAPs and ensure that maximum result is achieved.

This article seeks to analyse the effects of the adoption of the geographical indication on the determinants of socio-economic and cultural performance among Penja pepper producers’s group under geographical indication (GR-IGPP) Moungo Division in Cameroon. 176 producers who operate in 4 pepper production areas: Loum, Penja, Njombé, Bouba (Mombo) were asked about the data on socio-economic and cultural characteristics, the 13 characteristic elements of needs on which they spend income from pepper cultivation. These data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, with graphs using the SPSS 23 software. The mapping of the production basins was carried out as an illustration of the geographical characteristics. The results obtained indicate that the percentage of men (86%) who are involved in Penja Pepper cultivation is significantly higher than that of women (14%). The age of the producers ranged between 20 years and 70 years with 45.5% of them having at least a secondary level of education and 31.8%, Primary education. In households members varied but between 3 and 10 people was the most frequent. In the practice of agricultural activities, 46% of people had 10 to 20 years of experience while 8% had less than 5 years and 21% had more than 20 years of experience. Overall, their areas of interest are investment in agricultural activities (35%) and business (10%). Only 5.5% and 5% of producers were concerned about family education and health. Women invest little in farming (8.78%), and in business 0.85%. Involvement in socio-cultural activities, construction and provision of water and electricity for households were not different from other activities. Majority of the producers were men with 39.9% of them within the active age group of 41-50 years. About 71.6% practiced professional pepper cultivation with a reseasonable proportion of income reinvested into the farms. The pepper producers must focus on the aspects of promoting culture, membership of cooperatives and CIGs that guarantee social cohesion in order to increase the chances of sustainability of this culture.

Introduction: As part of Ghana’s agricultural modernization agenda aimed at ensuring the National Food Security, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) through its extension directorate has been promoting the adoption of improved maize technologies. Method and Material: This paper presents the finding of a study conducted to assess the determinants of adoption of improved maize technologies among smallholder farmers in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. Exploratory survey design was employed with multistage sampling techniques adopted in selecting 400 maize farmers for the study. Result: Personal interviews, administration of semi-structured questionnaire, observations, and focus group discussions were the main methods employed in data collection. Probit regression model was applied in analyzing determinants of the adoption of improved maize technologies. Household annual income, access to labor, access to credit, and extension contact were found as significant determinants of farmers’ level of adoption of improved maize technology. Conclusion: The study recommends to the MOFA to promote the use of labor saving simple farm tools in carrying out the various production recommendations under the improved maize technology. Furthermore, MOFA needs to work with financial institutions to support maize farmers with credit to enable them to acquire the necessary inputs required in the implementation of the improved maize technology.

The study examined factors influencing adoption of improved agricultural technologies (IATs) among smallholder farmers in rural communities of Kaduna State.The study was conducted in Giwa and Sabon-gari Local Government Areas. Three objectives guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design. Purposive sampling technique was employed to select the farming communities for the study. Two rural communities (Bassawa and Shika) were purposely selected out of 16 villages primarily because of their age-long agricultural technologies. The sample size of the study was 200 smallholder farmers made up of 100 farmers from each of the communities which were purposively selected. Primary data were collected using a structured interview schedule, focus group discussion and in-depth interview while the secondary data which relate to the objectives of the study were collected from the office of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Project (ADP) and National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), ABU, Zaria. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentages. Results from the findings of the study revealed a positive significant (p<0.05) influence on adoption of agricultural technology and farmers’ educational levels, gender and age also had a positive significant influence on the adoption of technology. Therefore, the following recommendations were made: there is need to increase farmers’ capital and credit facilities and make funds accessible to the farmers. Also, it is therefore imperative for Government to ensure that policies that support the adoption of improved agricultural technologies are put in place.

The study examined the influence of farmer group membership on the practice of improved agricultural technologies by farmers in Nyamusi division of Nyamira County. Multi-stage and stratified sampling techniques were applied for sample selection. Data collection was done by use of semi-structured questionnaires. Both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used for data analysis. Among the descriptive statistic techniques used included Mean, Standard Deviations and frequencies. For Inferential statistics, chi-square and cross tabulation were used to establish relationships between dependent and the independent variables. A total of 332 questionnaires were filled by the sampled farmers but only 304 were completely and adequately filled and analysed. The analysed data was presented using tables. From the analysis 229(75.3%) of the farmers belonged to a farmer group while 75(24.7%) were not members of any farmer group. The results indicated that the relationship was significant at 0.005 and 0.006 for the practice of greenhouse farming and Artificial insemination respectively. It can be concluded that membership in a farmer group increased the chance of a farmer practice of greenhouse farming and Artificial insemination. The study recommends that government should facilitate the Farmer Groups to transform their organizations into cooperatives in order to gain legal identify to transact business, increase their bargaining power and intensify their collective voices in policy engagement.

This study examined the determinants of agricultural innovations adoption among cooperative and non cooperative farmers in Imo State, Nigeria. The research design used in this study is descriptive survey research design. The area of study was Imo State, and data were gotten from the three zones, namely, Orlu, Owerri and Okigwe. Data were generated from a total population of 1184 registered cooperatives and non cooperative farmers. Using Taro Yamane formula, a total of 464 respondents were selected from both cooperative and non cooperative farmers. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection. Descriptive statistics and one way Analysis of Variance ANOVA were employed to address the research questions and to test the promulgated hypothesis. The findings revealed that important determinant of adoption include educational level, annual income, farm experience, frequency of contact, cooperative membership, price of the produce, type of media used, government policy, availability of success stories, frequency of training, attitude to novel ideas, household size, extent of livelihood diversification, availability of markets and parents occupation. Determinants of agricultural innovation adoption were also the same for cooperative and non cooperative farmers. Based on the findings made in the study, the study recommends that cooperative extension services need to be revolutionalized and given adequate attention. This can be achieved by developing new framework for cooperative extension and forging a common ground for both cooperative and agricultural extension work. Apart from recruitment and deployment of competent and well motivated staff, there is the need for provision of work gadget and work tools that are in tune with technological changes. Improved sugarcane varieties have been developed and promoted in Kenya, to enhance sugarcane productivity. However, their acceptance by farmers is low. This paper investigates this phenomenon in attempt to underpin contributing factors to low acceptance. It examines the relationship between farmers’ participation in technology development and dissemination processes; and acceptability of improved sugarcane varieties in Kakamega County. This study used cross-sectional survey research design. Target population was 137,355 small-scale sugarcane farmers from Kakamega County, from which a sample of 384 farmers was randomly selected. Questionnaires were used to collect data, which was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study established limited participation of sugarcane farmers in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane varieties. Significant relationships were established between farmers’ participation in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane varieties with their acceptability by farmers. The number of year’s farmers had produced these varieties was found to be a strong indicator of their acceptability by farmers. Research findings indicate need to avail necessary information about the improved varieties to farmers by the extension service providers. Utilization of farmer Participatory Technology Development and Dissemination approaches need to be enhanced in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane technologies.
This document summarizes a study on the profitability and production efficiency of small-scale maize production in Niger State, Nigeria. The study found that maize production was profitable, with an average net farm income of 48,109 Naira per hectare. Production costs were 77.9% of total costs, with labor as the largest cost. The production efficiency index of 2.50 indicated that returns exceeded costs by 150%, showing profitability. While profitable, the study recommended increasing farm size and production to enhance profits further. Improving access to farmland, education, credit, and extension services were also suggested to improve profitability of small-scale maize production in the area.

Kenya is prone to frequent droughts that are occasionally followed by flash floods. With agriculture being the mainstay of the economy, droughts and floods results in frequent loss of livelihoods and chronic food insecurity forcing farmers to adopt various uptake of green agricultural economy strategies in Murang’a County in Kenya. The objectives of the study were (i) to establish the form of green agricultural economy adopted (ii) to examine the socioeconomic and environmental benefits of the adopted strategies. A total of 48 farmers from eight sub-counties of Murang’a and two key informants were interviewed. The study established that all farmers practiced at least one form of green agriculture ranging from cons mulching, use of zai pits, and minimum tillage to practices that enhanced food production such as use of organic farm manure and value addition. Also some of the practices adopted such as growing of fruit trees and other types of trees mitigated climate change. From the green agricultural practices, farmers achieved socioeconomic benefits which included self through sale of fruits and fodder and conserved the environment by reducing lands the amount of CO2 sequestered. From the findings the study concluded that the practice of green economy in the County was affordable and enhanced household income and food security in a sustainable way. The study therefore recommends e development of new strategies that are suitable and affordable to the small building towards this end will enhance the adaptation rate.
Uganda has made some progress improving nutrition but still faces challenges with high levels of stunting and anemia. The government has developed nutrition policies and plans and established units focused on food and nutrition security within the Ministries of Agriculture and Health. However, coverage of key interventions remains limited. A new multisectoral nutrition project funded by GAFSP aims to increase production and consumption of nutrient-rich foods and use of community nutrition services through school gardens, nutrition education, and small community gardens. To further accelerate progress, the document recommends mainstreaming nutrition across agriculture and health programs, strengthening institutions and community interventions, and increasing advocacy efforts.

Low cassava productivity in Nigeria has been linked to low adoption of modern technologies amongst farmers, creating a large gap between the current and the potential yield of cassava. Therefore, this study examined the level of adoption of improved cassava variety (TME 419) and its drivers among cassava farmers in Oyo state, Nigeria. Data collected from 236 cassava farmers with the aid of structured questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, adoption index and logit regression model. Results showed that cassava farmers in Oyo state were 49 years of age with farming experience of 21 years and farm size of 4 ha. About 69% of surveyed farmers adopted the improved cassava variety while the adoption coefficient was 0.66. The likelihood of adopting improved cassava varieties was significantly influenced by education, household size, primary occupation, farming experience, farm size, land ownership and age. Therefore, increasing the years of farmers’ education, farm size, ownership of land, entry of younger farmers, household size and non-farm occupation will increase the likelihood of adopting improved cassava variety among farmers.

Abstract— The study assessed the effect of yam-based production on the food security status of farm households in Edo south, Nigeria. Specifically, the objectives of the study were to examine the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, analyse the contribution of yam-based production to the income profile of the households, estimate their mean per capita daily calorie intake and examine the determinants and the probability of households being food secured.
A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting 120 farm households from Edo South agro-ecological zone of Edo-State data were collected with the aid of well – structured interview schedule on households socio-economic variables which included sex, age, marital status, level of education, farm size, household size and household income and expenditure profile among others. Data collected were analyzed by appropriate statistical analysis which included frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and Logit regression model.
The results showed that 97 males, represented majority of the households with (80.8%) and females 23, represented 19.2%of the house heads. The mean age of household reads was 50 years, of which (92.5%) of them were married, 53% owned houses and 58% had farming experience of 11.20 years the mean household size was estimated as seven persons with a mean farm size of 1.35 hectares. The mean annual household income in the study area was estimated as N 496.850.88 out of which farm income contributed N 62.4307, and off income contributed (37.57%). The mean monthly household expenditure was N 40,934.31 out of which food expenditure accounted for 40 .22%. The results also showed that the area was fairly food -secured with 52.5% being food secured and 47.67 being food insecure with mean per capita calorie intake of 36,okcal and 120.2 kcal respectively.
Finally, the results also revealed that three variables in the logit model were significant in explaining variation in the food security status of the households. These are farm size, form income and off-income. It was recommended that government should provide bigger plot of land for those farmers who are determined to take farming as business.

This document summarizes a study on the economic evaluation and risk analysis of integrated pest management (IPM) in cotton production in Sindh, Pakistan. The study analyzed factors affecting IPM adoption, estimated cotton yields for IPM adopters and non-adopters, and estimated risks involved for each group. Regression analyses were used to estimate production functions for adopters and non-adopters. Costs, returns, and risk analyses were then conducted and compared between the two groups. The results showed some input costs and factors like rainfall, temperature, and humidity significantly affected yields differently for adopters versus non-adopters. IPM adoption was found to impact cotton production relationships and yields.

Abstract: The study examined the influence of farmers’ education level on the practice of improved agricultural technologies by farmers in Nyamusi division of Nyamira County. Multi-stage and stratified sampling techniques were applied for sample selection. Data collection was done by use of semi-structured questionnaires. Both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used for data analysis. Among the descriptive statistic techniques used included Mean, Standard Deviations and frequencies. For Inferential statistics, correlation, Chi-square and cross tabulation were used to establish relationships between dependent and the independent variables. Internal consistency technique was used to ensure reliability of the research instrument through the computation of Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha and was found to be 0.81 which meant that the data collection instrument was consistent and reliable. A total of 332 questionnaires were filled by the sampled farmers but only 304 were completely and adequately filled and analysed giving a Questionnaire Return Rate (QRR) of 91.6%. The analysed data was presented using tables. The study revealed that 44.4% of the farmers had completed primary level education. The study established that farmer level of education did not significantly influence the practice of agricultural technologies. In order to boost farmer literacy levels, the study recommends that the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education should consider working with farmer groups in promoting functionality of literacy centres.

Investigating Academic Performance in Practical Agriculture: Evidence from Si...Premier Publishers
This study investigated the attitudes of students to practical agriculture and examined whether there were significant differences in the mean scores in Practical Agriculture Achievement Test (PAAT) among the three categories of schools used for this study. This study was a descriptive survey design carried out in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Nine (9) public secondary schools were randomly selected from three different Local Government Areas (LGAs) out of eleven (11) present in Ibadan zone comprising three (3) Boys’ only, three (3) Girls’ only and three (3) Co-educational schools. A total of two hundred and fifty-five (255) Senior Secondary Schools (SSSIII) students from three selected categories of schools participated in this study. PAAT and AtPAQ were the research instruments used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test of independence, ANOVA and multiple comparison techniques. The ANOVA test was significant (p = .00). Boys’ only schools had the highest mean scores of 48.14 followed by Girls’ only schools with 42.72 while Co-educational schools had 34.92. Least Significant Difference (LSD), a multiple comparison technique, on the ANOVA showed that there existed significant differences in the mean scores of PAAT for all pairs of the three categories of schools. There was no association between students' mean scores and selected attitudinal variables. The study recommended awareness campaign on the importance of agricultural science education and training as a vocational subject which can make them self-employed after leaving school and also boost agricultural productivity in the nation.
Despite the sago palm’s significant contribution to village economies since early times, it has never been cultivated in a systematic manner by local farmers in Luwu Utara Regency, Indonesia. This study examines farmers’ willingness to plant sago palm and the determinant factors influencing farmers’ adoption behavior. A descriptive analysis and binary logit model were used for this paper. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents agree that replanting is generally important and they believe it to be of concern for every local farmer. The results further indicate that knowledge of an integrated cultivation system of sago, access to information and training, internal motivation, work experience, and the size of the sago area are the determinant factors influencing farmers to plant sago palm. The findings in this study could explain farmers’ adoption of a better cultivation system plays an important role in the future of sustainable sago palm production.
This document proposes a project to validate clamp and silo storage methods for extending the shelf life of harvested sweet potato roots in Uganda. Sweet potato is an important food security crop in Uganda, but farmers currently harvest all crops before the dry season due to losses from weevils and rotting, resulting in price fluctuations. The project will test storage of three varieties in clamps and silos in three districts, assessing rotting, sprouting and damage over time. Promising techniques will be disseminated through extension partners. Market opportunities will also be identified to help farmers and traders benefit from longer shelf life. The goal is to increase food security and incomes for 40,000 sweet potato growing households through extended fresh root availability.

This study examined the determinants of agricultural innovations adoption among cooperative and non cooperative farmers in Imo State, Nigeria. The research design used in this study is descriptive survey research design. The area of study was Imo State, and data were gotten from the three zones, namely, Orlu, Owerri and Okigwe. Data were generated from a total population of 1184 registered cooperatives and non cooperative farmers. Using Taro Yamane formula, a total of 464 respondents were selected from both cooperative and non cooperative farmers. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection. Descriptive statistics and one way Analysis of Variance ANOVA were employed to address the research questions and to test the promulgated hypothesis. The findings revealed that important determinant of adoption include educational level, annual income, farm experience, frequency of contact, cooperative membership, price of the produce, type of media used, government policy, availability of success stories, frequency of training, attitude to novel ideas, household size, extent of livelihood diversification, availability of markets and parents occupation. Determinants of agricultural innovation adoption were also the same for cooperative and non cooperative farmers. Based on the findings made in the study, the study recommends that cooperative extension services need to be revolutionalized and given adequate attention. This can be achieved by developing new framework for cooperative extension and forging a common ground for both cooperative and agricultural extension work. Apart from recruitment and deployment of competent and well motivated staff, there is the need for provision of work gadget and work tools that are in tune with technological changes. Improved sugarcane varieties have been developed and promoted in Kenya, to enhance sugarcane productivity. However, their acceptance by farmers is low. This paper investigates this phenomenon in attempt to underpin contributing factors to low acceptance. It examines the relationship between farmers’ participation in technology development and dissemination processes; and acceptability of improved sugarcane varieties in Kakamega County. This study used cross-sectional survey research design. Target population was 137,355 small-scale sugarcane farmers from Kakamega County, from which a sample of 384 farmers was randomly selected. Questionnaires were used to collect data, which was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study established limited participation of sugarcane farmers in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane varieties. Significant relationships were established between farmers’ participation in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane varieties with their acceptability by farmers. The number of year’s farmers had produced these varieties was found to be a strong indicator of their acceptability by farmers. Research findings indicate need to avail necessary information about the improved varieties to farmers by the extension service providers. Utilization of farmer Participatory Technology Development and Dissemination approaches need to be enhanced in the development and dissemination of improved sugarcane technologies.

The study found that maize production was profitable, with an average net farm income of 48,109 Naira per hectare. Production costs were 77.9% of total costs, with labor as the largest cost. The production efficiency index of 2.50 indicated that returns exceeded costs by 150%, showing profitability. While profitable, the study recommended increasing farm size and production to enhance profits further. Improving access to farmland, education, credit, and extension services were also suggested to improve profitability of small-scale maize production in the area.

Kenya is prone to frequent droughts that are occasionally followed by flash floods. With agriculture being the mainstay of the economy, droughts and floods results in frequent loss of livelihoods and chronic food insecurity forcing farmers to adopt various uptake of green agricultural economy strategies in Murang’a County in Kenya. The objectives of the study were (i) to establish the form of green agricultural economy adopted (ii) to examine the socioeconomic and environmental benefits of the adopted strategies. A total of 48 farmers from eight sub-counties of Murang’a and two key informants were interviewed. The study established that all farmers practiced at least one form of green agriculture ranging from cons mulching, use of zai pits, and minimum tillage to practices that enhanced food production such as use of organic farm manure and value addition. Also some of the practices adopted such as growing of fruit trees and other types of trees mitigated climate change. From the green agricultural practices, farmers achieved socioeconomic benefits which included self through sale of fruits and fodder and conserved the environment by reducing lands the amount of CO2 sequestered. From the findings the study concluded that the practice of green economy in the County was affordable and enhanced household income and food security in a sustainable way. The study therefore recommends e development of new strategies that are suitable and affordable to the small building towards this end will enhance the adaptation rate.
Uganda has made some progress improving nutrition but still faces challenges with high levels of stunting and anemia. The government has developed nutrition policies and plans and established units focused on food and nutrition security within the Ministries of Agriculture and Health. However, coverage of key interventions remains limited. A new multisectoral nutrition project funded by GAFSP aims to increase production and consumption of nutrient-rich foods and use of community nutrition services through school gardens, nutrition education, and small community gardens. To further accelerate progress, the document recommends mainstreaming nutrition across agriculture and health programs, strengthening institutions and community interventions, and increasing advocacy efforts.

Abstract: The study examined the influence of farmers’ education level on the practice of improved agricultural technologies by farmers in Nyamusi division of Nyamira County. Multi-stage and stratified sampling techniques were applied for sample selection. Data collection was done by use of semi-structured questionnaires. Both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used for data analysis. Among the descriptive statistic techniques used included Mean, Standard Deviations and frequencies. For Inferential statistics, correlation, Chi-square and cross tabulation were used to establish relationships between dependent and the independent variables. Internal consistency technique was used to ensure reliability of the research instrument through the computation of Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha and was found to be 0.81 which meant that the data collection instrument was consistent and reliable. A total of 332 questionnaires were filled by the sampled farmers but only 304 were completely and adequately filled and analysed giving a Questionnaire Return Rate (QRR) of 91.6%. The analysed data was presented using tables. The study revealed that 44.4% of the farmers had completed primary level education. The study established that farmer level of education did not significantly influence the practice of agricultural technologies. In order to boost farmer literacy levels, the study recommends that the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education should consider working with farmer groups in promoting functionality of literacy centres.

This study investigated the attitudes of students to practical agriculture and examined whether there were significant differences in the mean scores in Practical Agriculture Achievement Test (PAAT) among the three categories of schools used for this study. This study was a descriptive survey design carried out in Ibadan Metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Nine (9) public secondary schools were randomly selected from three different Local Government Areas (LGAs) out of eleven (11) present in Ibadan zone comprising three (3) Boys’ only, three (3) Girls’ only and three (3) Co-educational schools. A total of two hundred and fifty-five (255) Senior Secondary Schools (SSSIII) students from three selected categories of schools participated in this study. PAAT and AtPAQ were the research instruments used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test of independence, ANOVA and multiple comparison techniques. The ANOVA test was significant (p = .00). Boys’ only schools had the highest mean scores of 48.14 followed by Girls’ only schools with 42.72 while Co-educational schools had 34.92. Least Significant Difference (LSD), a multiple comparison technique, on the ANOVA showed that there existed significant differences in the mean scores of PAAT for all pairs of the three categories of schools. There was no association between students' mean scores and selected attitudinal variables. The study recommended awareness campaign on the importance of agricultural science education and training as a vocational subject which can make them self-employed after leaving school and also boost agricultural productivity in the nation.
Despite the sago palm’s significant contribution to village economies since early times, it has never been cultivated in a systematic manner by local farmers in Luwu Utara Regency, Indonesia. This study examines farmers’ willingness to plant sago palm and the determinant factors influencing farmers’ adoption behavior. A descriptive analysis and binary logit model were used for this paper. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents agree that replanting is generally important and they believe it to be of concern for every local farmer. The results further indicate that knowledge of an integrated cultivation system of sago, access to information and training, internal motivation, work experience, and the size of the sago area are the determinant factors influencing farmers to plant sago palm. The findings in this study could explain farmers’ adoption of a better cultivation system plays an important role in the future of sustainable sago palm production.

This study focused on the Influence of Agricultural Education Programme in Revamping Young Farmers Club for Food Security in Rivers State. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of this study comprised eleven (11) and thirteen (13) Agricultural Educators in Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education respectively. Due to the fact that the population was manageable, the entire population was adopted for this study, hence, there was no sampling technique adopted for this study. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistical tool was used to test the hypotheses. This study found that Agricultural Education Programme could revamp young farmers club through conducting orientation programs for new students on young farmers club, organizing symposium on importance of young farmers club, organizing conferences on young farmers club, organizing seminars on young farmers club and advertorial on young farmers club. Provision of educational support by: conducting practical for members, equipping future farmers susceptible to new ideas and modern practice, extension training on entrepreneurship, providing vital information to boost the interest of potential farmers, extension training on leadership, introducing potential farmers to farmers cooperative, creating and coordinating communication of agricultural potentials, by motivating members through allotment of time for young farmers club meetings, regular visit of agricultural educators to young farmers club meetings, supervision among others. It was recommended that there should be orientation programme for every year one student in the Department of Agricultural Education so that they could be abreast with the benefits of becoming member of young farmers club. If this is done, it will help to increase the number of students in the club.

The use of chemical inputs in conventional agriculture is associated with some health and environmental issues. This led to a call for more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture without health issues. However, there is low participation in organic farming in Nigeria, which could be linked to less knowledge about its profitability. The study investigated smallholder organic maize farming profitability in Northern Nigeria. We employed descriptive statistics, profitability analysis, and a multiple regression model to analyse data collected from 480 maize farmers. The results revealed that organic maize farmers had a gross profit of USD 604.81 per hectare, a 0.46 profit ratio, a 0.54 gross ratio, a 0.32 operating ratio, a benefit-cost ratio of 1.85, and a 0.85 return on capital invested. Thus, organic maize farming is a productive and profitable venture. Organic manure, compost manure, farm size, selling price, cooperative membership, extension contact, access to credit, irrigation, education, and major occupation were factors that enhanced organic maize farming’s net profit. However, seed and transportation costs negatively influenced organic maize farming's net profit. Therefore, government and development agencies must intervene to make organic farming more sustainable and profitable by subsidizing seed costs and providing f inancial assistance to farmers.

Soil is the most crucial resource on which agriculture is based. Proper management of this valuable
resource is vital to sustain long-term agricultural productivity. Farmers’ knowledge level and adoption of
soil management practices have influenced agricultural productivity. This study therefore, investigated the
farmers’ knowledge gap and adoption of soil conservation practices in North Central Nigeria. A four-stage
random sampling technique was adopted for selecting 960 respondents from all the six states for the study.
Structured questionnaire and interview schedule were used to elicit information from the respondents. Data
collected were analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics such as frequency counts, percentages,
and mean, standard deviation, and knowledge gap and adoption indexes. The overall results for the six states
showed that 45.3% had low knowledge gap, 43.4% had medium knowledge gap, and only 11.3% had high
and wider knowledge gap of soil conservation practices. Benue have the largest (52.3%) number of farmers
with the lowest knowledge gap on soil conservation practices. Results showed that 37.2 and 38.6% of
respondents had low and moderate adoption rate, respectively, while only 24.2% had high adoption rate of
soil conservation practices. State-wise, Benue (0.74) had the highest adoption rate while Kogi (0.33) had
the lowest. Adoption rate of soil conservation practices is significantly influenced by farmers’ knowledge
level at varying degree. It is concluded that farmers’ knowledge gap and adoption of soil conservation
practices ranges between low and medium with wide knowledge gap were found mostly in the areas of
terracing, contour farming, conservation tillage, and vegetative barriers. The study recommend that training
with result demonstration through agricultural extension services should be organized for farmers on soil
conservation practices to bridge their knowledge gap, especially in the areas where wider gap was found
and increases its adoption.

Introduction: As part of Ghana’s agricultural modernization agenda aimed at ensuring the National
Food Security, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) through its extension directorate has been
promoting the adoption of improved maize technologies. Method and Material: This paper presents
the finding of a study conducted to assess the determinants of adoption of improved maize technologies
among smallholder farmers in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. Exploratory
survey design was employed with multistage sampling techniques adopted in selecting 400 maize
farmers for the study. Result: Personal interviews, administration of semi-structured questionnaire,
observations, and focus group discussions were the main methods employed in data collection. Probit
regression model was applied in analyzing determinants of the adoption of improved maize technologies.
Household annual income, access to labor, access to credit, and extension contact were found as
significant determinants of farmers’ level of adoption of improved maize technology. Conclusion: The
study recommends to the MOFA to promote the use of labor saving simple farm tools in carrying out the
various production recommendations under the improved maize technology. Furthermore, MOFA needs
to work with financial institutions to support maize farmers with credit to enable them to acquire the
necessary inputs required in the implementation of the improved maize technology.

The study provides an overview of the state of Agricultural Extension with the major aim of identifying gaps and areas of advocacy in the laws and policies that govern extension service delivery in Uganda, document the linkages and analytical trends between agricultural extension and performance of Health, Trade and Industry and Water and Environment sectors, as well as establish the value of each shilling or dollar invested in agricultural extension. Using secondary sources of data and Statistical Based Costing methods, the results revealed that the state of agricultural extension services in Uganda is wanting. Adoption of improved technologies was very low and technology misuse was very rampant. In livestock, the quality of veterinary services and their use were particularly very low. Our results showed that the unit cost of providing agricultural extension services that result in increased productivity, better nutrition as well as higher incomes to farmers is UGX 66,290 per visit. The total cost of not providing agricultural extension is extremely high and the country stands to lose greatly due to the multiplier effect and spillover effect of agricultural extension in other productive sectors. There is certainly need to invest in agricultural extension both in crop and livestock sectors.
The study examines the influence of contact farmers on the adoption of improved cassava
varieties in Epe, Lagos state. Data for the study were generated from a field survey of cassava farmers selected
by random sampling technique among contact and non-contact farmers in Epe, Lagos state. Descriptive
statistics,Fourt and Woodlock Model, Mansfeild Model and Bass Diffusion Model were employed for the
analyses. The descriptive statistics was used to analyse social economics of the selected farmers, while Fourt
and Woodlock Model, Mansfeild Model and Bass Diffusion Model were required in analysing the diffusion
process and prediction of adopters of improved cassava varieties.The results show that 2.4% are below 30 years
of age 36.3% fall within the age bracket of 30 – 40years, 40.0% falls within 41-50years and 21.3% were above
50 year. In all, about 78% of the farmers are below the age of 50 years, which is regarded as young or youthful
age, dynamic enough to adopt improved crop varieties. The coefficient of imitation q is 0.795. This is a positive
value, and implies that the diffusion process is high. The coefficient of innovation influence p is estimated as
0.005. This also is positive, meaning that the use of external influences on potential adopters has very little
effect on the adoption decision. The decision to adopt was mainly through the word of mouth recommendation.
It was shown that, the diffusion process could be predicted by applying the Bass model, Fourt and Woodlock
model and the Mansfield model.

This study examined the effect of Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme Phase 1 ATASP 1 on Farmers Performance in Southeast, Nigeria. It used a well structured questionnaire to collect data from a cross section of randomly selected 730 respondents. A combination of analytical tools such as descriptive statistics, Tobit and multiple regression analysis and inferential statistics were used for analysis. The study found that 56.6 of the farmers are males with an average age of 44 years, who are 87.8 married and have 10 years of formal schooling. Apart from over 19 years farming experience, the average 6 people per household is large enough to supply cheap family labour to the farmers. The study found out that the programme interventions are classified into three important components, which are infrastructure, financial market and commodity value chain development. It was also revealed that farmers adopted the following agricultural technologies the use of improved seed varieties, the use of ICT extension facilities, and keeping a good farm processing record to track changes, among others. The study, therefore, recommended among others, that the programme implementers need to be transparent in their disbursement and implementation of the project mandates and that there is a need to improve the literacy level of the farmers, as this will go a long way to improve their possibilities of technology adoption. This study evaluated people's perceptions of pine tree plantations and food security in the Kigezi Highlands region of Uganda. A mixed-methods approach was used, including questionnaires and group discussions with 384 participants.
The findings indicate that most respondents had a negative perception of pine tree plantations, believing they contributed to issues like land degradation, loss of biodiversity, and competition with crops. However, some benefits were also acknowledged, such as increased income and fuel wood. Overall, the study found that pine tree plantations had a negative effect on food security in the region due to the amount of land occupied. When breeding diploid potatoes, tetraploid progeny can result from the union of 2n eggs and 2n pollen in 2x-2x crosses. Thirty-three crosses were made to examine tetraploid progeny frequency in 2x-2x crosses. All crosses were between S. tuberosum dihaploids and diploid self-compatible donors, M6 and DRH S6-10-4P17. Using chloroplast counting for ploidy determination, the frequency of tetraploid progeny was as high as 45% in one of the 33 crosses. Based upon single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, the tetraploid progeny were attributed to bilateral sexual polyploidization (BSP), which is caused by the union of 2n egg and 2n pollen. Dihaploids were identified that produce lower frequencies of 2n eggs. The results of this study suggest that S. tuberosum dihaploids with a high frequency of 2n eggs should be avoided in 2x - 2x crosses for diploid breeding programs.
This study developed a low cost and affordable to small-scale farmers’ indirect air-cooling combined with evaporative cooling (IAC+EC) system for storage of fruit and vegetables under both arid and hot; and humid and hot climatic conditions. Field heat from freshly harvested produce should be immediately removed through cooling to the desired storage temperature. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of IAC+EC system in terms of the cooling time requirement of the fresh tomato fruit. A fresh tomato cooling experiment to remove field heat during the summer month of September in Pietermaritzburg was conducted for 36 hours where the IAC+EC system was compared to storage under ambient conditions. The results showed that 16 hours was required to reduce the flesh temperature of tomatoes to 16.5°C while the flesh temperature for tomatoes under ambient conditions followed the ambient temperature profile with time of storage. The IAC+EC system reduced and maintained the microenvironment air temperature inside the coolers to 16.5°C - 19°C. The ambient temperature varied between 21 and 32°C. The results in this study are evidence that IAC+ EC system can be a choice for farmers, for cooling the fresh by reducing the field temperature after harvest.
Dioscorea rotundata is a staple food crop for millions of people in the tropical and subtropical regions. In vitro germplasm conservation is a very useful tool in yam improvement strategies but very little is known about the genetic integrity and stability of in-vitro conserved yam plants. In this study, 42 accessions from in vitro and field populations were genotyped using 11 microsatellite markers and 23 morphological descriptors to assess variability within and between accessions. Out of the 23 morphological variables used, 13 were identified as most discriminate and were used to cluster the accessions into 4 clusters using the unweighted pair group arithmetic mean average (UPGMA). Accession maintained in field as well as in in-vitro showed high genetic similarity (R2 = 0.91, p-value: 1e-04). Out of the 42 accessions analyzed, nine accessions maintained in the field and in-vitro displayed different genetic profiles. This study provided basic information on the possible somaclonal variation of yam accessions maintained through in-vitro. Further study with advanced tools such as next-generation sequencing is required to elucidate the nature of the observed variation within clones.
A study was carried out on plant density at the experimental field of the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) Nkolbisson, Yaoundé to determine the appropriate spacing to improve rainfed rice production in the bimodal rainfall forest zone of Cameroon. The experiment was conducted during the main cropping seasons of 2017 and 2018. The planting spacing used were 15cm x 15cm, 20cm x 20cm, 25cm x 25cm and 30cm x 30cm giving the plant populations of 444444, 250000, 160,000 and 111,111 plants / ha respectively using two varieties (Nerica 3 and Nerica 8). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant differences were observed in the growth and yield across the years. Treatments were highly significant concerning the number of days to the appearance of the first flower, the number of days to 50% flowering, and the number of days to 50 % maturity. Plants were taller with more tillers and gave higher yields in 2017 than those of 2018. The spacing significantly affected the plant height, number of tillers, and panicle length for both varieties. The interaction of spacing and variety was significant for the number of tillers per m2 and the number of seeds per panicle, however, it was not for the weight of 1000 grains and the percentage of full bales. The yield components determining yield increase were the number of panicles / m2 and the number of seeds/panicles. Nerica 3 variety gave higher yields compared to the Nerica 8, the closer the spacing, the higher the yield. There were a strong significance and positive correlation between yield, number of panicles, and the number of grain per panicle. The spacing that gives the highest number of panicle per m2 was 15 cm X 15 cm and this spacing gave good yield in the region where the study was carried out.
Intermolecular interaction is the material basis for cells to achieve their functions, and protein-protein interaction is an important approach to illuminate the regulation network of biological molecules and has important theoretical significance and potential application value for revealing the activity law of life in nature. This paper mainly summarizes and analyzes the new advances and applications of modern biotechnologies in the study of protein-protein interactions, including local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), yeast two-hybrid, GST-Pull-down, bimolecular fluorescence complementation, and coimmunoprecipitation. At the same time, the principles of different research methods for protein-protein interaction and their other applications in the field of life sciences are also discussed, all of these will provide a reference value for the analysis of protein-protein interaction and the molecular regulation mechanism of biomacromolecules.
Field experiment involving five improved onion (Allium cepa L.) varieties and carried out at Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center during the 2018 to 2019 cropping seasons under irrigated condition to identify the best performing variety for seed production to the target areas of Arsi Zone. The onion varieties included in the field experiment were (Nafis, Robaf, Nasic Red, Bombe Red, and Adama Red). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Phenological and growth parameters, seed yield, and yield components were studied. The result showed that Variety had a significant effect on most phonological and growth attributes as well as on yield attributes. The number of days to flowering and vigorously were significantly affected by variety; while plant height, days to boolting and branch number was not significantly influenced by variety. Flower stalks height and diameter, number of umbel per plant, and umbel diameter also significantly affected by variety. Seed yield per umbel and mean seed yield per hectare also showed a significance difference among varieties. The highest seed yield per hectare (1415.89 kg/ha) was recorded from Adama Red and followed by Nafis variety, whereas Nasic rerd, Bombe red and Robaf show no significance difference among each other, Therefore, it can be concluded that use of the improved onion varieties such as Adama red and Nafis is advisable and could be appropriate for onion seed production in the test area even though further testing is required to put the recommendation on a strong basis.
Rubber trees are among the important cultivated crops in Malaysia, and have contributed to the country’s overall economic growth since the 1950s. However, the existing anatomical and morphological studies are relatively insufficient. Currently, Hevea brasiliensis has been cultivated and planted commonly as a commercial planting clone, while Hevea camargoana remains to be a non-cultivated and underutilized rubber species. For many years, there only exists little information both in private plantations and government agencies that have carried out anatomical and morphological assessments on these underutilized species. There is little information about the characteristics of H.camargoana, thus raising the issue among plant breeders on how to best use this underutilized rubber species. This study attempts to investigate the taxonomic values and characteristics of Hevea brasiliensis and Hevea camargoana through anatomical and morphological studies.
Use of distributed electricity generation systems is currently increasing due to their economic and environmental benefits. Agricultural greenhouses require heat and electricity for covering their energy needs while their annual energy requirements vary significantly. Aim of the current work is the investigation of applying various distributed electricity generation systems in greenhouses. A review of different distributed generation systems currently used in various sectors as well as in greenhouses has been implemented. Various technologies are examined utilizing either renewable energies or fossil fuels in very efficient energy systems. Most of them are mature and cost-effective having lower environmental impacts compared with traditional centralized electricity generation technologies. Their use in greenhouses results in many benefits including the creation of an additional income for the farmer, reduction of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and increasing stability of the electric grid. It is suggested that distributed electricity generation systems should be used more in greenhouses when the necessary conditions are favorable.
Grain mold, considered the most important disease of sorghum, is associated with several fungal genera. The disease reduces both yield and quality. In this study, over 300 sorghum seed samples collected from Texas, Florida, and Georgia were evaluated for grain mold severity, seed weight, germination rate, and seed fungal community. Grain mold severity of the seed samples, except for those collected from Cameron, Texas, were rated 3 or higher, indicating that these sorghum lines were moderately susceptible under naturally-infected field conditions during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. Seed weight across surveyed locations ranged from 1.1 g to 4.0g for samples collected in Texas during the same period. Percent germination rates for samples collected in Texas ranged from 59.6% to 86.7%. Sorghum samples collected from Florida and Georgia exhibited moderately susceptible response to grain mold infection. Mean seed weight was 1.9 g for samples collected from Florida, while in Georgia, mean seed weight was 2.3 g. Germination rate was low for samples collected from Florida and Georgia. Mycological analysis of sorghum seed samples collected from farmers’ fields in Central and South Texas during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons showed Alternaria species as the most frequently isolated fungal genus, accounting for 40% and 42 % in 2016 and 2017, followed by Fusarium incarnatum, F. acuminatum, F. equiseti, & F. semitectum Complex. In Florida and Georgia, Fusarium incarnatum, F. acuminatum, F. equiseti, & F. semitectum Complex was the most frequently recovered fungal species, accounting for 77% and 72% of the total. genera/species isolated from seed samples. Other fungal species, including Curvularia lunata, Bipolaris sp., Colletotrichum sublineola, F. verticillioides, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus flavus, F. thapsinum, F. oxysporum, F. sporotrichioides, F. graminearum, F. proliferatum, and Aspergillus niger were also isolated from sorghum seeds in various frequencies. In conclusion, the presence of large number of fungal genera associated with grain deterioration and their effect on other traits, makes management of this disease complex challenging. To identify grain mold resistant sources in a region, using the most dominant species in that region to screen the sorghum germplasm is recommended.

The tests for the evaluation of seedling establishment, palatability and acceptability were carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Department of Agricultural Technology and the Food Laboratory of the Department of Home and Rural Economics, Adamawa State College of Agriculture, Ganye, Adamawa State. The experimental designs used were Randomized Complete Block Design and the Completely Randomized Design. Some of the parameters measured were percentage seedling establishment, palatability, and acceptability tests. The highest mean percentage seedling establishment was observed in 12.00g levels of H. suaveolens whole powder treated shelled groundnut seeds (97.67, 97.00, and 94.00) at the three periods of storage. Percentage seedling establishment decreased with a decrease in levels of H. suaveolens whole powder. One of the major constraints to the use of plant materials as an alternative to synthetic insecticides is the issue of standardization in dosage of application. This work has suggested that, if groundnut seeds are to be used for sowing, they should be stored with a 12.00g level of H. suaveolens whole powder for every 300.00g for three months. However, if they are to be used for consumption, they could be stored with a 6.00g level of H. suaveolens whole powder for every 300.00g for at most three months. There was no significant difference between treated and untreated shelled groundnut seeds at the three periods of storage on the acceptability and palatability score of cooked groundnut at all dosages of application. All treatments were within the acceptable score rates even though the two rates of the synthetic insecticides, actellic dust were at the lowest acceptable score rate. The finding also showed that acceptability and palatability decreased with an increase in dosage of application. The periods of storage also had a significant impact on the mean percentage seedling establishment. It was observed that there was a higher percentage of seedling establishment when shelled groundnut seeds were stored from November- January. At this period of the year, the temperature and humidity are usually low and this might have necessitated the high state of inactivity and low performance of the bruchids compared to other periods of storage within the year.
1. The study examined the effects of mulching and irrigation on cocoa seedling survival and establishment during the dry season in Ghana.
2. Results showed that irrigation and mulching significantly increased soil moisture content. Cocoa seedlings raised in topsoil, mulched and irrigated had the highest survival rate of 94.5%, while seedlings without irrigation or mulching had the lowest survival rate of 47.1%.
3. Irrigation had a significant positive effect on cocoa seedling survival, plant height, and leaf number. Seedling survival was 89.6% under irrigation versus 65.6% without irrigation. Mulching alone did not significantly affect seedling survival.
Few years ago National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) launched melon sheller to reduce burden of obtaining melon oil and cake, and to enhance rural women’s productivity. This study looked at the productivity of promoted melon shelling technology and preference by rural women in Nigeria. Data were gathered from the NCAM workshop and survey of melon processors in Niger State. In the workshop, it was found that time allowed for soaking melon and covering with piece of clothes contributed to the productivity of the sheller. Results from survey revealed that 95.1% of the respondents’ preferred Internal Combustion technology and 90.2% liked electric-driven melon shellers over the manual one. Also, 69.5% obtained the shellers from local fabricators rather than NCAM. The technology led to increased turnout of melon (378kg/hr) and reduced wastages to 1.26kg out of 75.6kg. The study concluded that the promoted melon sheller is efficient and have positive implication on the rural women’s productivity and revenue. The study recommends that the rural women should put the melon sheller into its maximum capacity use. The NCAM should extend training to the local fabricators so that they can improve on the technology most especially in the areas of winnowing and washing of melon kernels.
Keeping in view of lack of recommended rates of N and NPS fertilizers, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the newly introduced NPS fertilizer and nitrogen on growth, physiology and above ground biomass of garlic. Four NPS (0-0-0, 78.75-69-12.75, 105-92-17 and 131.25-115-21.25 kg N-P-S ha-1) and three nitrogen fertilizer rates (114.13, 228.26 and 278.33 kg N ha-1) were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Significantly highest plant height (28.02 cm), leaf diameter (1.27 cm), dry and fresh weight (4.71 g and 6.11 g) and leaf length were recorded on garlic plants supplied with 105-92-17 kg N-P-S ha-1 and also the highest plant height (27.75 cm), leaf length (24.02 cm), fresh and dry weight (6.23 g and 5.04 g) were recorded on garlic plants supplied with 278.33 kg N ha-1. The interaction effect also show a significant effect in almost all the growth parameters; the early day to 50% emergence was recorded from a plot which received 228.26 kg N ha-1 and 105-92-17 kg NPS ha-1 and the highest plant height, leaf length, fresh and dry above ground biomass and leaf diameter were 29.62 cm, 25.60 cm, 6.93 g, 5.59 g and 1.4 cm, respectively were observed by the interaction of 278.33 kg N ha-1 and 105-92-17 kg N-P-S ha-1 with no significant difference with 228.26 N and 78.75-69-12.75 kg N-P-S ha−1. From this one season experiment, fertilizer rates 307.01-69-12.75 kg N-P-S ha−1 could be recommended for garlic production.
In the past, conservation effort has primarily focused on establishment of forest reserves for timber production, with minimal or no consideration to how these natural resources will help sustain or improve livelihoods of adjoining communities. This study examined the contribution of Aramoko forest reserve to the livelihoods of the adjoining communities in Ekiti State. One hundred and twenty pre-tested questionnaires were administered among the products collectors in the study area. Data collected were analysed and the result showed that 78.3 % of the respondents are married with 52.3 % of them male, while 50.8 % of the respondents aged between 51-70 years with 64.1 % having at least secondary education. Twenty-five (25) different products were collected by the respondents in the study area. These products include among others; timber with highest frequency of (120) followed by herbal plants (115), Archantina marginata (105), Thaumatococcus danielli (89), Bridelia ferruginea (70) and Irvingia garbonensis (65). The use of motor cycle accounted for 41.4 % of the respondents means of transportation, while 31.3 % of the respondents sell their product in bit at the village market. Picking, digging, plucking, cutting and uprooting were methods used for harvesting by the respondents while illegal felling (24 %) and indiscriminate bush burning (22.4 %) were the major conservation problem in the study area. Specifically, some of the products harvested are used for food, medicine, fuelwood, herbs and cultural purposes. The study recommends that research should be conducted into how these products can be artificially raised in the nursery for plantation establishment.
Cocoa farmer faces increasing challenging environment through exposure to risks factors which have impacted negatively on their production or output. Since farmers are primary producers and often times lack capacity to control risks factor, it is important to manage this factors. This study examines the cocoa farmers’ risk preferences and crop insurance perception and isolates the drivers of decision to uptake crop insurance among cocoa farmers in Ekiti state. The sample for the study consist of 200 cocoa farmers who were household heads selected through multi-stage sampling across four Local government areas of Ekiti State who are predominantly cocoa producers. Data collected on socio-demographic characteristics, perception of crop insurance and risk preferences, were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic model. Results showed that majority of the cocoa farmers were without crop insurance, with higher enrolment in Membership of cooperative society, owned their land, larger household size and lower educational level but higher level of farm experience when compared to cocoa farmers who are holding crop insurance. Farmers risk preferences showed no significant difference between farmers with or without insurance. Education (β=0.59), Household size (β=0.0029) and Debt use (β=0.02), Membership of cooperative (β=-4.53), Farming Experience (β=-2.51), Owned Land (β=-2.19) and Non-Farm Income (β=-0.65) were among the significant determinants of insurance uptake. Risk mitigating measures such as provision of necessary incentives such as improved varieties of cocoa seedling, as well as provision of fertiliser and approved pesticides, financial assistance, and simple processing technologies that produce standard cocoa bean plus a re-jigged Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) for an improved discharge of its function are recommended.
Mitigation of climate change requires the decrease of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and the increasing use of renewable energies replacing fossil fuels. Agricultural greenhouses are energy-intensive agricultural systems using mainly fossil fuels. The use of renewable energies during their operation is limited so far. The possibility of using renewable energies for covering their energy needs has been investigated, focused on the Mediterranean region. Various sustainable energy technologies which are reliable, mature, cost-effective and broadly used in various applications are examined. These include solar-PV systems, low enthalpy geothermal energy, solid biomass burning, co-generation systems, high efficiency heat pumps and reuse of rejected industrial heat. Combined use of these systems in greenhouses can cover all their energy requirements in heat, cooling and electricity, reducing or zeroing their net CO2 emissions into the atmosphere due to operational energy use. It is concluded that depending on their local availability in Mediterranean countries, these benign energy technologies can assist greenhouse crop growers in the reduction of their carbon emissions, contributing in the achievement of the universal goal for climate change mitigation.
Field experiment was carried out under rain-fed conditions during the 2013 and 2014 cropping seasons at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Department of Agricultural Technology, Adamawa State College of Agriculture, Ganye, solely to develop an integrated pest management for the control of groundnut Aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) [Homoptera: Aphididae]. The experimental Design used was the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Parameters measured were, average number of leaves per plot at 6 weeks after sowing, number of branches at 3 weeks after sowing, number of branches at 6 weeks after sowing, number of pods per plot, weight of harvested seeds per plot. The result obtained shows that, there was significant difference among the treatments in all the parameters measured at 0.05 level of probability using the Least Significant Difference (LSD). According to the results recorded, the highest mean yield of groundnut was obtained on plots treated with the combination of chemical and physical control methods (1444g) followed by plots treated with physical, chemical and cultural control methods combined (1296g). The highest mean number of pods per plant was recorded in the combination of physical, chemical and cultural control methods (18.00) followed by chemical and physical control methods as combined (15.00). The work shows that, the cultivation of groundnut with the control of groundnut Aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) using integrated pest control applied as recommended facilitates better growth and guarantees good crop yield. The use of physical, chemical and cultural control method is profitable in Ganye Area of Adamawa State and is therefore suggested for use to local farmers.
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important food crops in the world. Purple rice, as a special rice with important nutritional and health functions, has important scientific significance and application value for genetic improvement of purple rice and breeding of new varieties through in-depth study on its agronomic and related quality traits and products processed, and analysis of its genetic basis. In this paper, the new progress of purple rice in agronomic traits, quality traits, environmental impacts on purple rice and genetic basis of purple rice seed coat in recent years were reviewed and analyzed, and the application prospects of purple rice processing products and purple gene in rice genetic improvement were also prospected. Thus, our results will provide important information and reference for breeding new purple rice varieties with good quality and high yield.
Groundnut is an important oil seed crop, grown throughout the tropics and sub tropics worldwide. It is one of the three economically important oilseed crops grown in Ethiopia. Groundnut is commonly produced by small scale farmers as food and cash crops in the study area. The area has potential to the production of Ground nut for food and nutrition security as well as export commodity. However, scarcity of varieties that fit to the environment is one of the major constraints of production. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate five Ground nut varieties and select early maturing varieties with considerable yield and agronomic traits. The field experiment was conducted in 2017 and 2018 at Abaya and varieties were planted in Randomized complete block design (RCBD). Data were collected on yield and important agronomic traits. The computed analysis of variance revealed significant variations among varieties for days to maturity, number of primary branches, number of pegs per plants, Grain yield and shelling percentage. The pooled over year mean of varieties indicated , Tole- 1 variety ( Check) is high yielding with mean grain yield of 4174.7kg followed by variety Sedi (3552.5kg/ha) and Babile local (3550.4kg/ha).Variety Sedi has special merit in terms of earliness and therefore recommended for moisture stress areas of Abaya and location with similar agro ecologies while Tole -1 (Standard check) is high yielding varieties and should be used in production until new varieties will be developed through selection/breeding program.

Abstract
Adoption of banana tissue culture in Uganda still remains low despite the availability of policies geared to enhancing
agriculture. A survey was carried out on 115 smallholder farmers in Central Uganda to establish the influence of
agro-related policies in tissue culture banana adoption between January and July 2018. Results from the study
indicated that 83.8% of the respondents were aware about the Plan for Modernization of Agriculture policy as
compared to National Agricultural Policy (5.5%), National Development Plan (13.12%) and Agricultural Sector
Development Strategy and Investment Plan (3.3%). Age, gender and education level all exhibited weak correlations
in relation to policy awareness while generally, the study found out that awareness of the of the policies did not
significantly influence farmer’s adoption of tissue culture banana in central Uganda (P>0.05). We conclude that most
of the agro-related polices were on paper and minimal efforts were in place to enhance their awareness amongst
small holder farmers. We therefore recommend that increased awareness of agro-related policies to the farmers as
well as integration of farmer interests in policy formulation are paramount in order to achieve wide uptake of agro-
technologies like banana tissue culture.

1. Introduction
Policy is a key factor in terms of accelerating adoption of new agricultural technologies and particularly in
addressing concerns such as food security, income generation, poverty and employment [1]. A number of agro-
related policies have over the years been introduced in Uganda with an aim of accelerating uptake of agricultural
technologies as well as enhanced food security through increased agricultural production. Such policies include; Plan
for Modernization of Agriculture (PMA), National Agricultural Policy (NAP), National Development Plan (NDP),
Agricultural Sector Development Strategy and Investment Plan (DSIP) amongst others. According to Monitoring
African Food and Agricultural Policies [2], PMA was developed in 2000 as a framework and was composed of
seven implementation areas which included research and development, NAADS, agricultural education, rural
financial services, marketing and agro-processing, sustainable use and management of natural resources as well as
physical infrastructure. Its major objective was accelerating agricultural growth in Uganda through the
introduction of profound technological change throughout the sector by supporting the dissemination and adoption of
productivity-enhancing technologies. DSIP focused on four broad and mutually reinforcing investment programs
namely enhanced agricultural production and productivity, improved access to and sustainability of agricultural
markets, creation of an enabling environment for investment in agriculture as well as institutional strengthening in
the agriculture sector. National development plan was formulated in 2010 according to Monitoring African Food and
Agricultural Policies [2] and it comprised of interventions and strategies to address various agricultural constraints
and such strategies included improving agricultural technology development, ensuring effective delivery of advisory
services, improved technology in controlling pests, vectors and diseases as well as enhancing productivity of land
through sustainable land use and management of soil and water. The National Agriculture policy (NAP) was
specifically designed to actualize an agricultural revolution in Uganda [3].
Banana (Musa spp) is an important starchy food and cash crop in Uganda with potential for food and livelihood
security [4]. Banana is traditionally a woman’s crop as compared to other typical cash crops such as coffee, tea and
cotton [5]. Production of banana in Uganda is highest in the western region particularly Isingiro district followed by

Central region (Mubende district) then Eastern (Mbale) and lastly Northern region (Arua) [6]. However, banana is
under threat of reduced productivity and sustainability since the current banana yields on small holder farms are far
from the estimated potential yield [4]. This is attributed to a number of biophysical and socio-economic factors. In
order to reduce this trend, the government introduced banana tissue culture technology as a measure of increasing
productivity and sustainability of this important crop. Government equally put in place agro-related policies to
accelerate uptake of new agricultural technologies such as banana tissue culture and accelerate food security and
increased agricultural production However, adoption by use of banana tissue culture still remains low and it remains
unclear whether this shift is due to social economic factors as affected by the politics of the time or as a result of
other factors. Thus, this research intends to ascertain the influence of these agro-related policies in the adoption of
banana tissue culture amongst small holder farmers in Uganda.
1.2. Materials and Methods
1.2.1. Description of Study Area
A survey was carried out amongst smallholder farmers in Wakiso district, central Uganda (Figure 1). The
district lies between coordinates 000
24’N and 320
29’E and neighbors Mpigi, Luwero, Nakaseke and Kiboga districts
in the North, Mukono in the East and Kalangala to the South. The district covers a total area of 2807.7 square
kilometers with lakes and rivers covering 52% of the total area, crop lands covering 42% and forests taking up 4%.
The area lies in the Lake Victoria crescent agroecological zone and receives bi-modal rainfall with an annual average
of 1320mm received in the months of April, May, October and November. The temperatures annually vary from
190
C to 270
C and relative humidity varies from 57% to 97%. The soils are generally of high productivity and are
mainly sandy clay soils. The district is characterized by isolated flat-topped hills with steep slopes often merging
abruptly into long and gentle pediments, which are usually dissected by relatively broad valleys. Generally, climate
in Wakiso is warm and wet with relatively high humidity which favors rapid plant growth. Republic of Uganda [7]
Wakiso district has a population of 1,997,418 accounting for about 6% of the total population with 69% of the
households deriving their livelihood from subsistence farming [8].

Wakiso District is one of Uganda’s major agricultural production areas with 12.1% of its population growing
bananas [8]. The study area is also a beneficiary of the National Agricultural Advisory Services program (NAADs)
as well as Operation Wealth Creation program (OWC). These programs are mandated to support management of
agricultural input distribution chains and strategic interventions for value chain development focusing on the upper
end of the commodity chains. These programs supply selected agricultural inputs to farmers such as seeds,
fertilizers, pesticides amongst others. Through these programs, small holder farmers are supplied with tissue culture
banana plantlets in a bid to increase banana production. In addition, the farmers receive free agricultural advisory
services from the agricultural service providers in relation to banana production.
1.2.2. Study Design
An explanatory research design was used for this study. This type of approach uses qualitative data to back up
explanations on quantitative data. This research design offers flexibility thus providing an opportunity for
considering different aspects of the problem under study [9]. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain
respondents’ demographic characteristics, general information regarding production of tissue culture banana,
farmers’ awareness of the various agro related policies in Uganda, their contribution to the adoption of banana tissue
culture and suggested amendments needed to boast adoption.
1.2.3. Unit of Analysis and Target Population
The unit of analysis for this study was the small holder farmer. A small holder farmer in this work is described
as a farmer who is involved in production of tissue culture banana on less than an acre of land for a period of not less
than three years under various production systems. The study population was comprised of farmers growing tissue
culture banana in Wakiso district while small holder farmers who had obtained tissue culture banana plantlets under
NAADs/ OWC programs were highly considered for this study because they could easily be accessed. Extension
workers aided in providing information regarding to the beneficiaries of tissue culture banana plantlets under these
programs.
1.2.4. Sampling Procedure and Sample Selection
A sample of respondents for the study was obtained using purposive sampling. According to Maina [10],
purposive sampling allows the researcher to use cases that have the required information with respect to the
objectives of the study. Thus, in this case, the researcher obtained lists of farmers who had obtained tissue culture
banana plantlets under OWC / NAADS program from various sub counties within Wakiso from 2014 to 2016 with
the help of the respective agricultural officers (Table 1).

The respondents were then sampled randomly in order to eliminate bias and a total of 115 respondents were
obtained. According to Mugenda and Mugenda [11], a sample size of 10%-30% is considered adequate for a
descriptive study, thus considering the upper limit of 30% against the accessible population of 380, this gives a
sample size of 115 respondents.
1.2.5. Data Collection
The survey was conducted between January and July 2018 from ten sub-counties in Wakiso district. The study
used semi- structured questionnaires to obtain information on the variables in question. These were self-administered
to 115 respondents by the help of enumerators. Timothy [12], notes that questionnaires play a central role in data
collection during surveys, census, case studies, experiments and document analyses. The questionnaires enabled the
researcher to collect in-depth information and as well allow for further probing and building rapport with the
respondents.
1.2.6. Data Analysis
The data collected was processed manually, edited, coded and entered in to Microsoft excel spread sheets. The
data was then subjected to analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 16.0) and Microsoft

excel (version 2013). Excel was used to obtain frequencies of various demographic characteristics as well as
frequencies in farmers’ awareness of agro-related polices. Correlational analysis was done to obtain the relationship
between various demographic characteristics like gender, age, education level and policy awareness. Chi -square
tests were made to ascertain the influence of agro-related policies on tissue culture banana adoption and results were
considered significant at P>0.05.
2. Results and Discussions
2.1. Demographic Characteristics of the Respondents
Results from the study revealed that 55.7% of the respondents were male while 44.3% were female (Table 2).
This implied that more men adopted TC banana as compared to the women in Wakiso district. The high uptake of
TC banana by more men than women is attributed to the increased access to information, land, credit and extension
services. Reveals that male have more power to make decisions regarding the factors of production on the farms as
compared to women. Faith [13], further states that despite women being the main food producers, they lack access
to and control over the means of production such as secure land tenure, information, credit and control of labour
which could result in limited uptake of agricultural technologies.

Furthermore, the various gender variations cut across the different age groups with 29.6% of the respondents
being between 36 and 55 years of age, 25.2% between 26-35 years, 22.6 % between 56-65 years, 12.2% of the
respondents between 15-25 years, while the least percentage of 10.4% were attributed to respondents above 65years
of age (Table 2). Thus, respondents aged between 36 and 55 years were more interested in TC banana technology
adoption as compared to other age groups. This is attributed to their enhanced knowledge and experience in banana
farming and specifically banana tissue culture. Older farmers are assumed to have gained knowledge and experience
over time and are better able to evaluate technology information than younger farmers [14, 15].
From this study, majority of the respondents had attained some degree of education with the majority having
attained a minimum of secondary education ,28.7% tertiary level, 17.4% having attained primary level, while 0.9%
had not received any formal training (Table 2). Attainment of formal education by majority of the respondents
implies that education plays a role in adoption of TC banana. This is attributed to the increased access to free
education through the universal primary and secondary programs in Uganda. Educated farmers are likely to adopt
banana tissue culture as compared to non-educated farmers Kabunga [16]. Education level of a farmer increases his
ability to obtain; process and use information relevant to adoption of a new technology [15] For instance a study by
Charles [1] on the factors affecting adoption of Tissue culture bananas in the semi-arid areas of lower Eastern
Region of Kenya found that education significantly affected adoption of tissue culture bananas.
Farming is the major economic activity of the people of Wakiso (53.9%) followed by business (26.1%) then
civil service (14.8%) and other who mainly constitute of students (5.2%), (Table 2). Hence, respondents whose
major occupation was farming had higher chances of adopting tissue culture banana because they could easily
experiment new agro-technologies like banana tissue culture as compared to other respondents who are preoccupied
with other activities.
77.4% of the households were male headed as compared to 22.6 % which were female headed (Table 2). The
study was dominated by male headed households because of easy access to resources such as land, credit,
information and extension services which are vital in adoption of agro-technologies. Reports that male headed
households adopted the tissue culture banana less than female headed households because male headed household
were likely to have more access to resources and information than women household heads due to traditional and
cultural gender roles which tend to discriminate against women. He further argues that male headed households have

mobility, participate in different meetings and have more exposure to information related to tissue culture banana
than women headed households
2.1.1. Policy Awareness of the Respondents
The results of the study revealed that 72.2% of the respondents were aware of Plan for Modernization of
Agriculture policy (PMA), 11.3 % were aware about National Development Plan (NDP), 4.3 % were aware of
National Agricultural Policy (NAP) while 2.6% were aware of Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (DSIP)
(Figure 2).

The wide awareness of PMA in Wakiso District is attributed to one of its pillar programs known as NAADS.
Through the NAADs program which later transformed into Operation wealth Creation, farmers were able to access
free improved crop and livestock technologies in order to boast agricultural production as well as increased contact
hours with extension workers. Ibrahim [17], reports that the NAADS program which was part of the wider Plan for
Modernization of Agriculture replaced the supply led extension system which mainly focused on promoting cash
crops for export in 2001.Hence, since this program delved mainly into food crops aiming at improving food security,
many farmers benefitted which resulted into wide awareness of PMA. Joughin and Kjaer [18], further state that the
qualified success and awareness of the PMA/NAADS occurred because there was no apparent contradiction between
the political and the technocratic agendas which resulted into the president directly backing up PMA and putting it at
the forefront of the National Policy. Reports by Samuel [19] indicated that the NAADS program resulted into
substantial positive impacts on the availability and quality of advisory services provided to farmers, promotion of
adoption of new crop and livestock enterprises as well improved adoption and use of modern agricultural production
technologies and practices. Awareness of NAP, DSIP and NDP remained relatively low as compared to PMA
probably because these policies remained on paper and there was less involvement of farmers in policy formulation
yet they are the final beneficiaries. Thus, this inhibits the realization of the policy’s overall objectives which are
mainly geared towards sustainable agricultural productivity.
2.1.2. Relationship Between Demographic Factors and Agro-Related Policy Awareness
Whereas the study hypothesized that age greatly impacts on policy awareness with the young having exposure
to more information compared to the older ages, a correlation analysis revealed a weak positive relationship between
age and awareness of NAP (r= 0.038) while a weak negative relationship is obtained for PMA (r= -0.034), NDP (r =
-0.208) and DSIP (r= -0.076), (Table 3). This implied that age had minimal influence of awareness of agro-related
policies. This could be attributed to limited exposure to policy information across the different age groups as well as
minimal interest in searching for information. This disagrees with most studies which reveal that younger farmers
have a longer planning horizon, hence vibrant in searching for information [20].

Furthermore, a weak positive relationship was obtained for gender of the respondents and awareness of NAP
and DSIP while weak negative relationships are obtained for PMA and NDP (Table 3). This implied that gender of
the respondents had minimal impact on creating awareness about the agro-related policies in Uganda. This is
because access to information is not dependent on gender attributes but on individual’s willingness to search for
information. This could equally be attributed to the limited social groupings that bring together male and females and
the lack of organized farmer groups where agro-related policy issues can be discussed. This disagrees with a study
by Simtowe [21] that showed that women had more awareness on improved pigeon pea varieties due to their higher
propensity to being exposed to improved agricultural technology than men.
This study further hypothesized that education level of the respondent played a great positive role in creating
awareness of the agro-related policies because of increased exposure to information, however, a weak negative
correlation was obtained between education level and awareness of PMA, DSIP, NAP and NDP (Table 3). This
implied that education level of the respondent played no great role in creating awareness of agro-related policies.
This differs with reports of various studies that reveal that a higher level of education increases farmers ability to
process and use information [22, 23]. This equally disagrees with the findings of Irene [24] who reports a positive
effect of formal education on the awareness of extension devolution.
2.1.3. Influence of Agro-Related Policy Awareness on Tissue Culture Banana Adoption
Results from the study revealed that awareness of PMA, DAP, DSIP and NDP had tolerance levels above 90%
and acceptable Variance inflation factors (VIF< 2). The significance level for the various policies were; PMA (P=
0.432), NAP (P=0.187) DSIP (P=0.093) and NDP (P= 0.872) (Table 4). All the stated P-values were greater 0.05.
This therefore implied that awareness of the different agro-related policies was not statistically significant in the
adoption of banana tissue culture as farmers who had no prior information of such agro-policies had adopted banana
tissue culture. This implies that in as much as the agro-related policies were in existence, farmers decision to adopt
tissue culture banana was not influenced by their awareness of such policies. This is probably because many of the
polices were on paper but limited efforts were in place to draw farmers towards them. James and Anne [25] reported
that initial political intentions to promote agriculture in Uganda were strong rhetorically, and the policies looked
good on paper yet implementation often failed due to reasons such as insufficient resource allocations to the sector
among others. Thus, this greatly impeded farmers’ awareness and interest in such policies.

3. Conclusion
This study established that most of the respondents were aware about the Plan for Modernization of Agriculture
policy as compared to other polices. This is because this policy was designed for the rural communities to enhance
poverty eradication through the transformation of the agricultural sector. Further, the study revealed that age, gender
and education level of the farmer did not influence policy awareness and that awareness of the agro-related policies
was insignificant in tissue culture banana adoption in Uganda. This information is crucial towards various policy
makers and researchers in developing policies for farmers as well as accelerating uptake of new technologies. The
study thus recommended a need to increase farmers’ awareness of the various agro-related policies so that they can
ably benefit them in increasing technology adoption. It also recommended integration of agro-related policy issues
within the education curriculum for the benefit of various people. Furthermore, limitations such as difficulty in
accessing extension services, agricultural credit, land and high cost of the technology need to be addressed in order
to increase uptake of new agro-technologies in Uganda.
