Age of exploration
- 2. WHAT LEAD TO THE AGE OF EXPLORATION A major reason the Age of Exploration began was to find trade routes to the Indies to make it more inexpensive. When Columbus discovered the New World the rush to claim new land began. Explorers also saw the chance to fame by going to explore, seek new knowledge and new wealth. They also had a intense desire to spread Christianity.
- 3. PORTUGAL The Age of Exploration began in Portugal when the rulers sent explorers to Africa. Prince Henry influenced their expeditions by encouraging the explorations and directing many important expeditions by sending sailors out almost every year. He wanted to explore the west coast of Africa to further continue the crusades against the Muslims, trade and of course, find gold. The Portuguese explored the coasts of Africa, India and eastern sea routes of Asia. They took over the seaport of Goa, India. They also attempted to take over Indonesia, but was known as the Spice Islands. By the 1500s, Portugal was producing colonies in Brazil.
- 4. SPAIN Spain wanted to become a more powerful country in Europe. The best way to gain power was to fund explorations and claim new land. They were in a race to beat Portugal in controlling Asia’s wealth. Christopher Columbus claimed land for Spain. He thought it was the West Indies, but in reality it was America.
- 5. FRANCE French explorer, Giovanni da Verrazano, explored the Atlantic coast which is now North Carolina to Canada. This was France’s first claims to America.
- 6. ENGLAND England eventually began exploring after Spain and Portugal dominated for many years. John Cabot made England’s first voyage of discovery. He landed in Canada thinking it was the Indies. He claimed that land for England. Another explorer Henry Hudson, discovered the Hudson Bay for England. He started many English claims for land in Canada.
