Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy to a middle-class family. He studied many subjects like astronomy, geography, and history. Columbus proposed sailing west to reach Asia to King John II of Portugal and others, but they denied funding due to believing his estimated distances were too short. Eventually, Columbus gained funding from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Between 1492 and 1503, Columbus made four voyages to areas of Central America and islands near Florida, marking the beginning of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
