The 18 th  Century : The Period of Enlightenment In this unit we are talking about revolutions.  Specifically the English and the French Revolutions.  Today we are discussing the philosophical thoughts – the new ideas - that contributed to new ways of thinking about politics and government.
The Enlightenment At this time  science and technology  exploded with new knowledge.
John Locke At the same time,  philosophers applied scientific principles  to the study of government and society.  They emphasized the use of  reason  – to free themselves from ignorance and superstition.
Thomas Hobbes  Through this, the philosophers felt people could perfect themselves and society.
The Enlightenment Prior to this who was believed to hold all the social, economic and political power?
These philosophers presented many different theories on how government and society should be run. This radically changed people’s view of society.
