Purdue University Division of Student Affairs

This document summarizes a capstone project created by students in CGT 411/450 for the Division of Student Affairs. The students developed a more engaging mobile-friendly website to communicate campus events and activities to Purdue students, addressing a lack of uniformity. Their solution included benchmarking other universities, rich multimedia content, social media integration, and a design focused on students. It was tested with surveys and focus groups and will launch on August 1 at purdue.edu/afterclass, providing a legacy for future student teams.

At only 15 months after its adoption of Blackboard Learn, Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) has been breaking barriers in learning and creating new paths for student achievement. In this presentation, they will share about their experiences in adoption, the solutions that surfaced after a school-wide adoption of Blackboard Learn,their tiny victories in attempting to curb resistance in the adoption of a new learning management system, and, more importantly, the partnerships that they have forged this far into the journey. They understand that institutions in the earlier stages of adoption experience similar difficulties and they hope to ease each other's burdens by sharing lessons, solutions and triumphs.

This highly innovative analytical tool will be designed to improve the student experience. Jisc has supported the creation of a UK wide Change Agents Network to support staff and students working in partnership on technology enhanced curriculum change projects. The network provides a virtual and face-to-face forum for staff and students across the UK to share approaches/experiences and offer support. The network was created as it was identified that working in partnership increases the success of technology-led projects and delivers the identification of student need and appropriate action. Delegates will have an opportunity to hear examples of how institutions are working in partnership with students to identify and affect sustainable change. Students who have participated in the network will share their experiences and outline the benefits they have experienced in working in partnership with staff on curriculum change initiatives. The network has worked with the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) to develop an award for staff and students working in partnership on change projects, the Institutional Change Leader award and this session will offer an insight into how colleges and universities are recognising and rewarding student participation in change projects. Participants will engage in discussion around this award and will be given access to the accreditation resources and materials, which they may wish to take to their own institution. The network has also developed a guidance toolkit to support colleges and universities with implementing student partnerships, which has been developed from the collective resources of a range of Jisc, Higher Education Academy, QAA and institutional initiatives in this area. Delegates will participate in a group activity using these interactive materials so as to evaluate their use in supporting their own practice in taking forward student partnership working in their own institutions. The revised state of play for micro-credentials in Australasia

In 2019 ACODE ran a survey to understand where Australasian HE Institutions were up-to in relation to establishing micro-credentials. At that point less than a quarter had even a policy in place. Since then the effort towards micro- credentialing has increased. The 2020 ACODE survey reveals that, if not already well-underway, institutions are developing or seriously considering micro- credentialing strategies. A number of interesting trends emerged that this presentation will explore, such as, several universities are working on ways to integrate existing short course systems into award course systems. Others are planning to offer micro-credentials to businesses and government in a commercial capacity. It was noted that professional practice degrees are a new space being explored to tap into industry partnerships. There is also consideration of co-delivery with VET providers. In all this, many indicated that they needed to rethink their operating structures to best service micro-credentials in their various permutations.

Current online information environments and the associated social and pedagogical transactions within them create an important information ecosystem that can and should influence and shape the professional engagement and digital scholarship within our learning communities in the higher education sector. Thanks to advances in technology, the powerful tools at our disposal to help students understand and learn in unique ways are enabling new ways of producing, searching and sharing information and knowledge. By leveraging technology, we have the opportunity to open new doors to scholarly inquiry for ourselves and our students. While practical recommendations for a wide variety of ways of working with current online technologies are easily marketed and readily adopted, there is insufficient connection to digital scholarship practices in the creation of meaning and knowledge through more traditional approaches to the ‘portfolio’. In this context, a review of the portfolio integration into degree programs under review in the School of Information Studies led to an update of the portfolio approach in the professional experience subject to an extended and embedded e-portfolio integrated throughout the subject and program experience. This was done to support a strong connection between digital scholarship, community engagement, personal reflection and professional reflexive practices. In 2013 the School of Information Studies established CSU Thinkspace, a branded Wordpress solution from Campus Press, to better serve the multiple needs and learning strategies identified for the Master of Education programs. The aim was to use a product that replicates the authentic industry standard tools used in schools today, and to model the actual ways in which these same teachers can also work in digital environments with their own students or in their own professional interactions. This paper will review how the ePortfolio now provides reflective knowledge construction, self-directed learning, and facilitate habits of lifelong learning within their professional capabilities. It focuses on what we learned from our JISC Students4WebEs project where we taught students how to set up and run a webinar. Employers participated in student run webinars on employment skills that they were looking for. The presentation highlighted some of the issues of engaging students in research in a further education setting as well as identifying students as change agents. The University of Wollongong and Blackboard have collaborated to develop an exemplary course for staff that demonstrates best practice for digital learning within Moodle. In 2015, the University implemented a set of minimum expectations and good practice elements called the Digital Learning Thresholds (DLT). The DLT strategy supports the principle that all students will have access to digital learning and both staff and students have clear expectations about the use of digital learning within the curriculum. This session will be co-presented by Lynley Clark from Blackboard and Denise Spanswick from the University of Wollongong (UOW). It will discuss how Lynley and a small team of Educational Designers from UOW worked together to incorporate the DLT elements into examples of activities and resources within a Moodle site with the aim of providing a model or exemplar to develop staff’s understanding of digital learning in a way that could more easily translate to their own subject development and an exceptional learning experience for UOW students.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
