After independence in the 1980s, African countries faced significant problems. Disease like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and epidemics spread rapidly throughout the region, exacerbated by poverty, overpopulation, drought, and lack of access to healthcare. Civil wars and ethnic conflicts also erupted, sometimes leading to genocide. Many areas experienced recurring famines as population growth outstripped industrialization and the ability to feed people. Literacy rates remained low at 50% across Africa, hindering development. These challenges have persisted into the 21st century.
