Media Through The Looking Glass: How Online and Print are Collaborating to Ev...Sheraan Amod
In the future, media will be personalized to individual tastes. A different product for every person, in digital or print form. The Internet has brought about this shift in the content and advertising space, and is going to disrupt the tangible medium as well. Print is not dead - it is evolving. Entrepreneurs are at the vanguard of this revolution, fusing knowledge gained from what were once diametrically opposing fields to bring innovative solutions to market that are reforming an industry. Personalization is the key trend that will drive several new types of online and print media applications in the future.
In this talk I will summarize my several attempts to introduce to students the basics of computer programming in a degree in Health Science. While the curriculum at the BSHS does not align very well with computer science content, the learning of a computer language addresses some essential higher-order thinking skills that bring cognitive benefits to the student as well as practical skills for their professional careers.
In the second half of the talk I will navigate four years of student data in General Chemistry with our in-house developed learning analytics tool BoSCO (Browser of Student and Course Objects). Rather than an intensive statistical analysis tool, BoSCO allows an “intentional browsing” of student data and it can be understood as a hypothesis generating tool that creates questions rather than giving a definitive answer or evidence. In particular, we will look at student performance in different types of assignments of the General Chemistry curriculum throughout the years filtered by different demographics criteria. More specifically, we will use the SLICE approach (Showing Longitudinal Interactions of Course Events) to bundle grades from different assignments or courses to quantify the learning of a specific skill.
IITSEC Presentation on Learning in Virtual Worldstaoirene
Can learners improve their knowledge of accounting by using a 3D interactive model of the accounting equation in Second Life?
Will students learn more working in small groups or alone?
Will students experience greater anxiety reductions if they work in small groups or alone?
The path of learning requires that students demonstrate the mastery of both skills and concepts in any class. In the traditional model of mastery in higher education, both formative and summative assessments are conducted via a rigid set of assignments, activities, and tests that require all students to perform the same set of skills for each concept mastery demonstration. The idea of choice in the classroom is a concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and while choice can be easily produced for content delivery (text, audio, video, interactive materials), assessment of both skills and concept mastery is not addressed in most classrooms. This leads to the development of homogenous courses and assignments where many students show objective mastery via exams and subjective mastery via writing. Students can be given choice on their demonstration of mastery without undue burden on the faculty member while also creating increased mastery of skills important to their respective fields. In business, a fungible asset is one that is mutually interchangeable. In this case, I am applying the concept of fungibility to learning assessment. Faculty can give students choice; but, in order to create fungible assignments that do not, faculty must ensure that proper design of instruction and assessment is used. In order to facilitate the assessment of fungible assignments, faculty must be able to create clear and concise criteria for assessment that tie directly to objectives for learning. Allowing students to choose how they show their knowledge of concepts and mastery of skills gives them control over their learning and ultimately improving educational outcomes.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

AERA 2012 — Aleahmad, Koedinger and Zimmerman
Editor's Notes
Hi I’m Turadg Aleahmad and I’d like to share with you the design and evaluation of Nudge, a computer support for studying at the right times.I’ve approached this work from an HCI perspective with my PhD advisors Ken Koedinger and John Zimmerman.
We all know that research is often difficult to translate into practice. We need more usable knowledge!Difficult to span the tension between internal and ecological validityModern computing lets helpsMy big goal is to use computing and design processes to lower the costs of deploying research in broad contexts, to understand contextual factorsThis requires systems that people can and WANT to use
Nudge was developed as part of a design-based inquiry in college lecture courses. The goal was to develop systems that fit into the design context and
I’ve applied some methods to build Nudge,, a system I built to help students allocate their study time more effectivelyI don’t have time to go into all the methods but I will skim over results from three phases of the design:Informed ExplorationEnactmentLocal Impact evaluationAt the end I will speculate on the fourth, Broader Impact
In the Informed Exploration phase I used HCI best practices to try honing in on a design that would fit First I chose a context that may adopt technologies easily: college lecture courses20 million college students every year, mostly in lecturesSorry I have to zoom through but one example result from interviews:by second semester…
So there appeared to be a need among students to have explicit support in how to study. Here is the scenario I used to validate whether that was true.In this hypothetical system, students are asked to report their study activities.Students record on their phones when they are doing different course activities like listening to lecture, or reading over notes. At the end of the course, students can see what different study activities predicted what grades and see evidence for trying new activities to improve their grades.Students really liked having explicit recommendations for how they could study better, but didn’t like having to enter everything in at the moment.
I developed 17 such explicit scenariosIn designing the scenarios,I consulted the IES practice guides to see what I could operationalize that fit these needs. One relevant to Nudge is #6, “help students allocate study time efficiently”Also ruled out many designs because… [read three]e.g. leaderboard
With the results of the interviews and literature review, I had a basic set of design principles for nudge.Basicallya software enhanced interactive syllabus[Walk through features without claims]
More usability testing[should be under 6 min at this point]
pilot, tested in a lecture course through voluntary useExam grades went up for students who used sooner than laterworth studyinglearned that students didn't like logging into the web sitelots of features not used much like a dashboard to track their progressoptimized the email interface
final iteration for evaluation[walk through the UI]progress shown by crossing out tasks skipped or completed
HypothesesH-grades: Student sent all Nudge messages perform better on assessments than students sent no Nudge messages.H-disposition: Students with poor study time use benefit more from Nudge messages.
What explains these gains?Lots of factors here. The task data was noisy and biased by condition. However we know the number of emails they opened and they were a positive predictor of exam scores for students with poor Time skills and were irrelevant for students with good time skills.[discuss more here before going to future work]
So what about the Broader Impact? Don’t have direct evidence but some indications point to the feasibility for broader impact.1. students liked it [data]2. cheap to author for by converting syllabus (quick and no domain expertise)3. didn't require any instructor changeseager to work with others on further deployments
