Small Group Discussion
1. How does your institution/department
conduct advising?
2. What are the wins and woes of how #1 is
handled?
3. How do you encourage students to attend
advising?
Rebecca
Little Coordination; Inconsistent Processes
Pre-Covid – very advisor specific; reach out to advisor via email and/or walk-in program advising hours; may find out via web, referral from central counseling & advising; or from course instructor through embedded assignments
Consequences – variable workload among advisors; barriers for students (hard to match availability of student-advisor; difficulties initiating 1st contact; lost time & inefficiency getting help)
All of these problems compounded during COVID & shift to Virtual Work.
Faculty Concerns, Buy-In, & Comfort
Problem of Scale – 6 advisors cannot do this all on their own; need all hands on deck approach – other instructional faculty who understand importance of advising, the system, & who can make connections & help with less complex advising needs (e.g., what should I take after….)
But…. underdeveloped resources & support structures for faculty -- deep faculty concerns about mis-advising students; duplication of effort; & concerns about balancing program advising with other instructional pursuits -- -for students – further barriers; uneven program advising knowledge across advisors; those in best positions to help a student may not be able to….
OVERALL – a lot of inefficiencies in the system – Note -- THIS IS all NORMAL as departments grow their program advising efforts.
Extra Notes
Rebecca
-1000 students – these are current numbers based on Fall 22 & combine all degree programs in CBS including certificates
-6 advisors (beginning # -- includes all CBS degrees?)
More accessible & findable – links to program advisors & names of advisors on websites & counseling webpages
Rebecca
-more resources & support available to our discipline faculty --> greater confidence & comfort levels with advising – leads into Valerie’s discussion
