Engaging Students with a Success Alert System.pptx
1. ENGAGING STUDENTS WITH
A SUCCESS ALERT SYSTEM
DR. DARRIN BERKLEY
MATHEMATICS SUCCESS, OUTREACH, AND RETENTION (SOAR)
COORDINATOR
FREDERICK COMMUNITY COLLEGE
2. SOAR COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Administrator (12 months) role at FCC
• Teaching of Courses (commonly those with the most alerts)
• Advising during peak registration periods
• Statistical analysis on course success and efficacy of success alerts
• Creation of required interventions for three-peaters in mathematics
• Share and analyze student issues with faculty, administration, and staff
3. WHAT ARE SOME FACULTY CONCERNS REGARDING A
STUDENT ALERT SYSTEM?
• No evidence that success alerts make a difference
• The language of the alerts are disingenuous
• Time consuming when many alerts must be sent
• Sending an email address most student concerns
• It is not the responsibility of the instructor to send alerts
4. WHY SEND A SUCCESS ALERT INSTEAD OF EMAILING
THE STUDENT?
• Students don’t check their college email
• Students don’t know how to access their email (especially Dual Enrollment student)
• Patterns of being unsuccessful in multiple classes
• Useful for advisors when talking with students about classes
• Informs other departments of the college of potential issues
• Information can be determined as to whether the reason for lack of success is academic or non-
academic
• Students aren’t necessarily comfortable responding directly to their instructor
5. LET’S ENGAGE! THE INTERVENTION
• Student was not aware that the course started
• Underestimation of workload
• Employed for too many hours
• Unaware of different tutoring modalities
• Miscommunication of expectations between instructor and student
• Assignments submitted incorrectly
• Cannot find assignments or was unaware of assignments
6. LET’S ENGAGE! THE INTERVENTION
• Sickness/Grief
• Mental Health/Depression
• Transportation
• Lack of motivation (parental pressure/course not needed)
• Lack of motivation (lack of interest in attending college or the course itself)
• Technological Issues
• Financial Aid
• Fear/Giving Up
• Childcare

Do you believe that a success system
works in general?
8. DOES IT WORK?

students if your school uses a success
alert system?
9. DOES IT WORK?
What type of data most convinces
administration and faculty that a
success alert system is effective?
10. STUDENT RESPONSE (MENTAL HEALTH)
I do not want to talk right now. I'm
extremely depressed and I don't wanna
talk to anyone. Please respect my
wishes x
