Quite a bit.
Like what?
Figure out what we want to do or
if we need to order books for that,
and what we want to do for prizes,
and how we want to structure it, and

is doing that and she is doing a

Kids are generally excited when
they get here?
Yeah, they get pretty excited.
We’re trying something new this

What kind of prizes do you have?

who work at the pool, include a variety of tasks one
might associate with a swimming pool gig: helping
youngsters during pool breaks, maintaining the
pool itself, keeping overzealous swimmers in check
and making sure everyone stays safe. It’s good,
important work. Both Baily and Nicole agree.
Nicole, as co-manager, what do
you have to do?
We make sure the pool is clean
and vacuum it if it’s dirty or
whatever and just make sure the
lifeguards get here on time and are
doing their job.
Do you have trouble with life-
guards not showing up?
No, they always come. They’re
pretty good at that.
How do you split duties with the
other co-managers? Do you have
weekly meetings?
We talk to each other a lot, me
and T (Taylor Hermsen), so if it’s
dirty we’ll both come in and clean
it, or if something else needs to be
done. But we both have certain days
that we manage.
How often do you have to clean
the pool.
We’ve cleaned it twice so far, but
normally maybe once or twice a
month.
You don’t clean it everyday?
Well, we screen it every day, but
not getting the vacuum out to clean
the bottom.
Baily, as a lifeguard, what’s your
day like?
It gets pretty busy sometimes,
sometimes a little hectic, but that’s
OK. It’s not too hard.
Do you have a routine?
When we first get here we
clean and whatever else we have
to do to get ready, and then it’s
just life guarding and making sure
everything is going smooth.
Nicole, how many years is this
for you at the pool?
This is my fifth year.
Is it a great summer job?
For Freeman, I think it’s a pretty
good job. There’s not a lot of jobs
where I can just come back and
work the summer.
Baily?
I like it. It’s pretty easy, but still
worthwhile. You get paid pretty
good for what you do, so it’s fun.
Let’s talk about misbehaving
children. Ever see any of those?
Baily: Yeah, there are a couple
who misbehave, but usually the ones
who misbehave are the usual ones
who come. If you tell them to stop,
they’ll pretty much listen.
What’s the worst offense that a
kid can do?
Nicole: Some kids have little
swearing problems. That’s hard to
control sometimes. Other than that
it’s pretty much arguing.
How to you fend off boredom sit-
ting here on the sidelines all day?
How do you keep your focus?
Because you might have to save
a kid.
Baily: Yeah, we take that very
seriously. We take classes to know
what we have to do and they’re not
easy classes. It really is harder than
it looks. We don’t actually just sit on
our butts all day. If something were
to happen, it would be a challenge
to save them, so we really have to
know what we’re doing.
As the summer goes on, is it
hard to come to the pool time
and time again?
Nicole: No matter what job you
have, you have to take it seriously.
If not, you won’t be on the job very
long.
Baily, where are you at mentally
by the end of the summer?
By the end of the year I’m kind of
like, ‘This is taking forever. When
will the summer be over?’ But when
I think about summer being over I
know I have to go back to school
and I’d rather be working.
Best thing about being a life-
guard?
Getting to know the kids.
Hardest thing?
Staying focused and realizing that
it’s a good job and I could be doing
something much worse.
Best thing about being a man-
ager?
It teaches me responsibility and
making that a positive. I like that.
Hardest thing?
Probably making sure the
lifeguards go out there on time (to
blow the whistle for pool break).
Ever have to kick anybody out of
the pool?
Nicole: Yeah, if they’re naughty.
But not too often.

“We are thrilled to welcome
Stephanie back to Mount Mar-

Long. “I look forward to her
eing a tremendous asset to our
eam thanks to her knowledge
nd experience, but it is her
eart for students that makes
er a perfect complement to our
mission here at Mount Marty,
ocused on faith, service, and

“Mount Marty is a great
college, and I can’t help but
feel renewed when talking with
President Long about MMC’s
momentum right now - this op-
portunity was too great to pass
up,” Moser said. “I am excited
to work with college students
again. This job is about more
than helping students make
their college decisions - it’s
about helping them find the
right college home and work-

until they walk across the stage
at graduation.”
As the dean of enrollment,
Moser will be responsible for
developing, implementing, and
assessing MMC’s strategic en-

With the win, the Bison kept
their postseason tournament
hopes alive in improving to 28-
24 overall and 11-17 in The
Summit League. SDSU dropped
to 20-32 overall and 12-16 in
league play.
The Jackrabbits grabbed a 1-
0 lead four batters into the
game. Tony Kjolsing led off
with an infield single and
moved to third base on a dou-
ble down the left-field line by
Paul Jacobson. Kjolsing later
scored on a groundout off the
bat of Jesse Munsterman.
Jacobson’s double was the
200th hit of his career, becoming
the 17th Jackrabbit in program
walk to Funk that was followed
by a double to left field by Ben
Petersen. Resch then stepped to
the plate and lined a 3-1 pitch
from Jackrabbit starter Andrew
Clemen into right field to score
both Funk and Petersen.
SDSU loaded the bases
against Bison reliever Brian
VanderWoude with one out in
the top of the ninth, but came
up empty as Jacobson and Luke
Ringhofer were retired on a foul
popout and fly ball to right,
respectively. The Jackrabbits
stranded 10 runners in the
game and were 0-for-13 batting
with runners in scoring posi-
tion.
Clemen struck out six and
walked three in 7 1/3 innings.
VanderWoude picked up the
win in relief after pitching three
shutout innings. He struck out
two and walked three. Bison
starter Blake Stockert walked
two and struck out two over the
first six innings.
The Jackrabbits and Bison
are scheduled to play the mid-
dle game of their three-game
series at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

m-low and gently simmer until
noa is tender (the little tails will
pop out) and most of the water is ab-
sorbed, 20 to 25 minutes Drain off any
excess water. Stir in the chopped cilan-
tro, scallions, oil and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Serve warm or at room temperature.
(The quinoa can be cooked, cooled
and refrigerated, covered, for up to 2
days. Microwave just enough to take
the chill off, about 2 minutes, stirring
about halfway through.)
Make the avocado cream: While
the quinoa cooks, process or blend
the avocado, sour cream, Parmesan,
lime juice, 1 tablespoon water, cay-
enne and 3/4 teaspoon salt in a food
processor or blender until smooth
and creamy.
If the corn still has a chill, micro-
wave it for about 1 minute.
Build the bowls: Divide the quinoa
evenly among 4 bowls. Top each with
neat piles and/or rows of chicken, tor-
tilla chips, corn, salsa and pepitas. Top
with some sauce, a sprig of cilantro
and a lime quarter.
