Every summer morning on the magnificent, 14-acre estate
property in Glen Cove on the Gold Coast, children in grades
nursery through ninth can be heard laughing, singing and
cheering to begin their adventurous day at North Shore Day
Camp. Whether it’s the younger campers celebrating TGIM to
welcome themselves back to another wonderful week, or it’s
the older campers celebrating Friday with “Special Events,”
this all inclusive day camp keeps each moment fresh for its
energetic campers.
Entering her 16th summer at camp, owner and director
Paula Rothman stated, “Every year we add something new to
keep things exciting. Two years ago it was our 9-hole, state of
the art mini golf course and last year it was our optional enrich-
ment program, which gives campers the opportunity to include
said. “We teach our campers the STARFISH values — sports-
manship, tolerance, appreciation, respect, friendship, integrity,
sensitivity and helpfulness — and instill it into their character.”
To help each child grow at a healthy and steady rate, the
younger and older campers have different opportunities and
are usually kept separate, except for select special events,
such as Carnival Day, Hooray for Hollywood and Wet and Wild
Day, where the kids can intermingle. “The younger campers
have pools, fields and fabulous playgrounds that are scaled
to size and their entire day is scheduled; they do everything
together,” said Rothman.
The older campers; however, are introduced to Club Time,
which allows them to choose how they will spend their day,
from a various list of athletic and creative clubs. “They are
able to specialize in things that interest them, such as softball,
football, music or drama,” explained Rothman. “They can even
choose all sports or all creative clubs, if that’s what they would
like.”
Fifth and sixth grade campers embark on day trips to Splish
Splash and Adventureland, while seventh through ninth grad-
ers journey overnight to Great Adventure, Philadelphia, Boston
and Washington D.C. The amazing and well-trained staff ac-
companies campers and closely supervises all activities and
free time.
“Our staff loves working here; we have a great retention
rate. Most of them come from word of mouth from other staff
members,” said Rothman. “We have an extensive interview
with them, designed by a company who created the best in-
terview questions for the job; it was specifically made for us.
The staff goes through four days of training, where we teach
them important lessons, like how to deal with bullying and how
to develop the kids’ self-esteem, as well as fun lessons, like
how to run an activity and provide a fun summer experience
for the kids.”
At North Shore Day Camp, kids will enjoy a summer filled
with activity, friendships, learning experiences and memories.
Whether they are going on long trips with old friends or swim-
ming in the heated pools with new friends, campers young and
old will be introduced to new experiences and will be ingrained
with long lasting values.

math, science and reading into their
day. This year we are introducing
a lacrosse program to add to our
long list of available sports at North
Shore Day Camp.”
North Shore Day Camp provides
children with a unique and active
experience each summer to help
them grow, learn and build friend-
ships that will last a lifetime. The
mission is simple, explained Roth-
man. “We teach children the skills
of making and keeping friends,
while building their self-esteem,
confidence and resilience,” she

HUNTINGTON NORTH SHORE TODAY / JULY 10, 2013
Carnivals, county fairs and street festivals make great
family outings. The nice weather beckons people outdoors and
resourceful carnival goers can usually find a fair nearby each
weekend. Revelers need to make sure their experiences are as
safe as they are fun.
The Outdoor Amusement Business Association estimates
500 million guests visit carnivals, fairs and festivals each year.
More than half of them participate in mobile amusement rides.
Such pursuits can be dangerous, especially for young children.
Parents need to consider the following precautions.
• Be prepared. Research the fair or carnival and know what
to expect when you arrive. Knowing what to expect can make
the occasion a little less stressful. Explain to your child how noisy
and crowded the fair can be and how everyone going should
always stick together.
• Dress for the weather. It is important to wear sturdy,
comfortable footwear. There will be a lot of walking and you want
to be sure you are comfortable. Check the weather beforehand
and dress for the temperature. Wear a hat to shield your face
from the sun and lather on plenty of sunblock. Avoid wearing
dangling clothes or jewelry. Tie back long hair to reduce your
risk of accidents on rides.
Safety Tips for Fairs and Carnivals
• Identify security guards or a security kiosk upon
entering. Let children know where safety personnel are
stationed. Establish a meet-up point that is very conspicuous
should anyone get separated from the group. This central location
should be easily identifiable for young children. Instruct the child
to stay there until you are reunited.
• Put your mobile phone number in your child's pocket.
Put your name or "Mom/Dad" on a sheet of paper with a contact
number and put it in your child’s pocket. Should he or she get
lost, the child can approach a security guard and give that person
your phone number.
• Take a current photo of the kids. Use your smartphone
or camera to snap a picture of your children when you arrive at
the event. This way you will have a method of helping others
identify them should they get lost.
• Observe the rides in advance. Watch rides before you get
in line to try them out. Figure out if it is appropriate for a child
and acclimate anyone who is nervous.
• Look for inspection stickers. Carnival rides often have
to be inspected for safety. If the ride doesn't have a current
inspection sticker, don't ride it.
• Stay hydrated. Pack plenty of bottled water. Fairs make
a lot of money on concession sales and buying beverages all
day can get expensive. Dehydration is common when spending
hours outdoors in warm weather, making people feel dizzy and
sick to their stomachs.
• Eat light. If you will be riding a lot of rides, it's better to eat
light meals. Heavy, greasy foods in your stomach coupled with
motion sickness can lead to trouble. Wait until after you have
gotten your fill of the rides before indulging in funnel cake.
• Seek shelter in a storm. Thunderstorms can roll in
unexpectedly. Remember, lightning will seek the easiest method
to reaching the ground. Tall rides could be strike points. Get out
of the weather and move indoors or to a car if possible.
Carnivals and fairs are staples of the warm-weather season
across the country. These enjoyable outings are even more fun
when families play it safe.

Add Some Decorating Touches that
Celebrate Summer
After a long winter and a chilly spring, you're ready to
give your home a bright and cheery summer look. But what
does that look like? Rather than painting the whole house
Bermuda pink or a beachy shade of blue, take a cue from
the season itself and, like bursts of flowers in a field, add
touches of summer throughout your home. You'll get that
sunny, summery feel everywhere you look.
LIGHTEN UP
Pack away heavy fabrics and add some brightly colored
pillows, towels and comforters to your style mix. Replace dull
brown and beige bath towels with bright stripes or stacks of
cheery colors, especially neons, which are hot right now.
Grab a space saver bag and put all those blankets,
comforters and warm, fluffy robes away until fall and save
space while you're doing it. Consider taking down blinds or
curtains and having only one or the other to bring more of
the summer's glory in the windows.
BE CRAFTY
Liven up dull window panels or slipcovers with a stamped
pattern. Look for a large rubber stamp in a simple design,
such as a poppy flower and stamp the fabric following a
pattern. Mint is a super trendy shade. For another quick
craft project, sew long, brightly colored summer scarves
into bolster pillows.Add small tassels at the corners and you
have a fun pillow unlike anything you can buy.
with sisal, add cut pieces of sisal into empty white picture
frames to create a focal point or message center.
Cut a 15-inch length of half-inch rope and slip two fish
eye hooks onto it. Knot each end and screw the hooks into a
cabinet, wall or barbecue grill — anywhere you need to hang
a kitchen towel or store barbecue tools. Use rope as a handle
on a garden gate, wind it around your hurricane candles or
fashion it into handles for a wooden serving tray.
GO FOR PATTERN
Certain patterns say summer and this summer the pattern
is Ikat. Ikat is a dyeing technique that creates a bold, tribal-
looking pattern that's often triangular in shape. Whether you
choose a cool Dylan Ikat bath towel (PotteryBarn.com) or
rooster-red Ikat cushions for your outdoor furniture (Kohls.
com), your home will look stylish.
Don't be afraid to mix patterns. Summer is all about putting
multiple patterns together to create a fresh and unique twist.
Pair an Ikat print with a bold zebra stripe or zesty neon to
create some summer sizzle.

The Various Healthy Attributes
of Soy Milk
Individuals who have an intolerance to dairy products
typically seek out alternatives to enjoy the foods and
beverages they like. For example, those who cannot enjoy
regular milk in their cereal or coffee often turn to soy milk to fill
the void. However, those who understand the health benefits
of soy may choose soy milk over other options whether they
can tolerate dairy or not.
Soy milk is made by soaking, grinding and boiling
soybeans in water. A traditional beverage in parts of Asia for
years, soy milk has only recently gained popularity in North
America, where people turn to soy milk as a dairy alternative.
Some vegetarians and vegans choose soy milk because they
prefer a plant-based beverage alternative, but soy milk has
nutritional attributes that can benefit anyone.
protein and fiber were included in a person's diet. Soybeans
also contain soluble fiber that helps prevent the absorption
and metabolism of cholesterol. Unlike dairy milk, which
is high in saturated fat, soy milk is comprised of mostly
monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
• Forms healthy bones. Soy products are naturally high
in calcium or may be fortified with calcium. Soy also contains
magnesium and boron, which are important for bone
strength. In addition, soy foods contain isoflavones, which
may inhibit the breakdown of bones. A 2005 study published
in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that intake of soy
food was associated with a significantly lower risk of fracture,
particularly among early post-menopausal women.
• Aids in weight loss. Cow's milk has about 12 grams of
sugar per cup, but soy milk has just seven grams of sugar
per cup. Soy milk also has fewer calories than other milks
and the fatty acids in soy milk can inhibit intestinal absorption
of fat.
• Helps prevent certain cancers. Of all the data
supporting soy's role in cancer prevention, information on
prostate cancer is the most promising. It is believed that
soy milk is a rich source of phytoestrogen, which can inhibit
testosterone in men and reduce their risk of prostate cancer.
• Estrogen replacement. The same phytoestrogen
that inhibits testosterone in men is an effective estrogen
replacement for women. This can help postmenopausal
women who have declining natural estrogen levels that
may contribute to mood swings, diabetes, obesity and heart
disease.
• Strengthens blood vessels. There is evidence that
the antioxidants and essential fatty acids in soy can protect
blood vessels from lesions and hemorrhages by binding to
the walls of the blood vessels.
Although there are many health benefits of soybeans,
there are some risks. Different processing methods may
result in unhealthy byproducts. Unfermented soy has a high
amount of phytic acid, which may lead to lower absorption
of certain vitamins and minerals. However, many people
feel the benefits of soy outweigh the risks. For the best
health benefits, look for soy products that are produced with
nongenetically modified soy crops.
- Metro Services
• Improves cholesterol
levels. One of the foremost
benefits of soy milk is its role
in lowering cholesterol and
helping prevent heart disease.
Research indicates a diet
with significant soy proteins
reduces total cholesterol,
LDL cholesterol (also known
as "bad" cholesterol) and
triglycerides. In 1993, in
a study published in the
American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, researchers from
Erdman & Potter reported a
12 percent drop in cholesterol
when 20 to 25 grams of soy

All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy
Finishing Touch Home Improvements
The Boathouse Waterside Café
Why can some three year olds tell you all about their
day in school, without any hesitations, while others are
repeating words? Many children who experience periods of
disfluency or stuttering between the ages of two and five are
often described as anxious or nervous, because the words
don’t easily flow out of their mouths. Pediatricians often say
that children will grow out of this phase, but it is common
for parents and children to become frustrated during that
time. All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy uses the
Lidcombe program to train parents to deliver treatment for
stuttering in their child’s environment on a daily basis. This
individualized program involves weekly visits to a speech
language pathologist and follow-up activities for when the
child is home. Many parents have been turning to All Island
Speech and Stuttering Therapy’s Director, Lori Melnitsky,
a trained speech pathologist, whose center offers speech
and language therapy with a Lidcombe trained therapist,
providing support, encouragement, family participation and
an individually tailored, goal oriented treatment program. The
combined services of a speech pathologist and the Lidcombe
programresultinincreasedsuccessanddecreasedfrustration
for children and their families. 7 Linda Lane, Plainview (516)

Joe’s Crab Shack
2555 Long Beach Road, Oceanside
(516) 255-3705, joescrabshack.com
After spending a long day at the beach, something about
going to a seafood dinner just feels right. A casual, upbeat
eatery is a fun way to spend the remainder of the evening and
there is no need to tidy up after the beach has worn you out
and left you looking less than your best. Joe’s Crab Shack is
a fun, laid-back seafood restaurant that supplies each diner
with their own individual napkin to wrap around their neck,
because crabs, mussels and shrimp can make for a messy
meal.
Joe’s Crab Shack is an ideal location for families or
groups of friends who are looking for a lot of laughs and
quality food. Waiters in brightly colored shirts periodically
perform line dances around the restaurant, and if it is your
birthday — watch out! A girl celebrating her 23rd birthday
was encouraged to wear funny props and run around the
restaurant, while her large table of friends whipped out their
cameras and screamed “Happy Birthday!”
The Crazy-Good Crab Dip ($9.29) was loaded with
crabmeat and was a big hit at our table — enjoyed by both
seafood lovers and landlubbers. The Crab Nachos ($10.79)
were piled high and difficult for one person to polish off on his
or her own. It was loaded with ingredients and full of flavor.
Both of these were great choices for a small taste of seafood,
before the main course. We also found the Fried Calamari
($8.29) to be deliciously crispy, and the Great Balls of Fire
($7.69) — seafood and crab balls filled with jalapenos and
cream cheese — were spicy and really whet our appetites.
Next came a steampot full of Garlicky Mussels ($9.89), which
were amazing and came with soft garlic bread to intensify the
flavor.
So much food was polished off already and the heart of
the meal hadn’t even begun yet! One of our crab-lover friends
delighted in feasting on the sweet King Crab ($34.99) and the
fire-grill flavoring made it taste like it was hot off the backyard
grill. Other flavors include spicy boil, garlic herb and Joe’s
famous BBQ. The steampot dishes came with a fresh ear
of corn and potatoes, and like the crab buckets, were time
consuming to eat, but that is all part of the fun. The Orleans
($21.99), a full pound of spiced up crawfish, shrimp and
Andouille sausage was enjoyed by all who chose it and The
Samuel Adams ($25.49) was another winner. The sweet snow
crab, clams, meaty lobster claws and smoked sausage dish
was boiled in Samuel Adams Lager — which brings us to the
drink menu.
Each drink that came out was more beautiful than the
next and they were the kinds of beverages you would enjoy
at a beach resort. The Piña Colada came served in a large
pineapple with whipped cream and diners are only allowed
to order the hardcore Category 5 Hurricane twice. Desserts
include unique choices, like the huge slice of chocolate
cake between two graham crackers, a chocolate bar and
marshmallows called the Campfire S’mores ($7.99).
For a wonderful summer meal and an abundance of
seafood and non-seafood choices, Joe’s Crab Shack is a
fun-loving restaurant that welcomes any crowd. For the full
experience, be prepared to dine for at least an hour and a half
— and be ready for a wait; they don’t take reservations. Joe’s
Crab Shack is open seven days a week for lunch through
dinner.

East Northport Commack North Shore Day Camp 85 Crescent Beach Road, Glen Cove (516) 676-0190, northshoredaycamp.com Every summer morning on the magnificent, 14-acre estate property in Glen Cove on the Gold Coast, children in grades nursery through ninth can be heard laughing, singing and cheering to begin their adventurous day at North Shore Day Camp. Whether it’s the younger campers celebrating TGIM to welcome themselves back to another wonderful week, or it’s the older campers celebrating Friday with “Special Events,” this all inclusive day camp keeps each moment fresh for its energetic campers. Entering her 16th summer at camp, owner and director Paula Rothman stated, “Every year we add something new to keep things exciting. Two years ago it was our 9-hole, state of the art mini golf course and last year it was our optional enrich- ment program, which gives campers the opportunity to include said. “We teach our campers the STARFISH values — sports- manship, tolerance, appreciation, respect, friendship, integrity, sensitivity and helpfulness — and instill it into their character.” To help each child grow at a healthy and steady rate, the younger and older campers have different opportunities and are usually kept separate, except for select special events, such as Carnival Day, Hooray for Hollywood and Wet and Wild Day, where the kids can intermingle. “The younger campers have pools, fields and fabulous playgrounds that are scaled to size and their entire day is scheduled; they do everything together,” said Rothman. The older campers; however, are introduced to Club Time, which allows them to choose how they will spend their day, from a various list of athletic and creative clubs. “They are able to specialize in things that interest them, such as softball, football, music or drama,” explained Rothman. “They can even choose all sports or all creative clubs, if that’s what they would like.” Fifth and sixth grade campers embark on day trips to Splish Splash and Adventureland, while seventh through ninth grad- ers journey overnight to Great Adventure, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington D.C. The amazing and well-trained staff ac- companies campers and closely supervises all activities and free time. “Our staff loves working here; we have a great retention rate. Most of them come from word of mouth from other staff members,” said Rothman. “We have an extensive interview with them, designed by a company who created the best in- terview questions for the job; it was specifically made for us. The staff goes through four days of training, where we teach them important lessons, like how to deal with bullying and how to develop the kids’ self-esteem, as well as fun lessons, like how to run an activity and provide a fun summer experience for the kids.” At North Shore Day Camp, kids will enjoy a summer filled with activity, friendships, learning experiences and memories. Whether they are going on long trips with old friends or swim- ming in the heated pools with new friends, campers young and old will be introduced to new experiences and will be ingrained with long lasting values. -Kristin Cacchioli math, science and reading into their day. This year we are introducing a lacrosse program to add to our long list of available sports at North Shore Day Camp.” North Shore Day Camp provides children with a unique and active experience each summer to help them grow, learn and build friend- ships that will last a lifetime. The mission is simple, explained Roth- man. “We teach children the skills of making and keeping friends, while building their self-esteem, confidence and resilience,” she PAULIETHEROOFER.Slateandtilespecialist.Stopping leaks, my specialty. • 9. HUNTINGTON NORTH SHORE TODAY / JULY 10, 2013 Carnivals, county fairs and street festivals make great family outings. The nice weather beckons people outdoors and resourceful carnival goers can usually find a fair nearby each weekend. Revelers need to make sure their experiences are as safe as they are fun. The Outdoor Amusement Business Association estimates 500 million guests visit carnivals, fairs and festivals each year. More than half of them participate in mobile amusement rides. Such pursuits can be dangerous, especially for young children. Parents need to consider the following precautions. • Be prepared. Research the fair or carnival and know what to expect when you arrive. Knowing what to expect can make the occasion a little less stressful. Explain to your child how noisy and crowded the fair can be and how everyone going should always stick together. • Dress for the weather. It is important to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. There will be a lot of walking and you want to be sure you are comfortable. Check the weather beforehand and dress for the temperature. Wear a hat to shield your face from the sun and lather on plenty of sunblock. Avoid wearing dangling clothes or jewelry. Tie back long hair to reduce your risk of accidents on rides. Safety Tips for Fairs and Carnivals • Identify security guards or a security kiosk upon entering. Let children know where safety personnel are stationed. Establish a meet-up point that is very conspicuous should anyone get separated from the group. This central location should be easily identifiable for young children. Instruct the child to stay there until you are reunited. • Put your mobile phone number in your child's pocket. Put your name or "Mom/Dad" on a sheet of paper with a contact number and put it in your child’s pocket. Should he or she get lost, the child can approach a security guard and give that person your phone number. • Take a current photo of the kids. Use your smartphone or camera to snap a picture of your children when you arrive at the event. This way you will have a method of helping others identify them should they get lost. • Observe the rides in advance. Watch rides before you get in line to try them out. Figure out if it is appropriate for a child and acclimate anyone who is nervous. • Look for inspection stickers. Carnival rides often have to be inspected for safety. If the ride doesn't have a current inspection sticker, don't ride it. • Stay hydrated. Pack plenty of bottled water. Fairs make a lot of money on concession sales and buying beverages all day can get expensive. Dehydration is common when spending hours outdoors in warm weather, making people feel dizzy and sick to their stomachs. • Eat light. If you will be riding a lot of rides, it's better to eat light meals. Heavy, greasy foods in your stomach coupled with motion sickness can lead to trouble. Wait until after you have gotten your fill of the rides before indulging in funnel cake. • Seek shelter in a storm. Thunderstorms can roll in unexpectedly. Remember, lightning will seek the easiest method to reaching the ground. Tall rides could be strike points. Get out of the weather and move indoors or to a car if possible. Carnivals and fairs are staples of the warm-weather season across the country. These enjoyable outings are even more fun when families play it safe. -Metro Services Make sure your carnival trip is enjoyable and safe.Make sure your carnival trip is enjoyable and safe. But what does that look like? Rather than painting the whole house Bermuda pink or a beachy shade of blue, take a cue from the season itself and, like bursts of flowers in a field, add touches of summer throughout your home. You'll get that sunny, summery feel everywhere you look. LIGHTEN UP Pack away heavy fabrics and add some brightly colored pillows, towels and comforters to your style mix. Replace dull brown and beige bath towels with bright stripes or stacks of cheery colors, especially neons, which are hot right now. Grab a space saver bag and put all those blankets, comforters and warm, fluffy robes away until fall and save space while you're doing it. Consider taking down blinds or curtains and having only one or the other to bring more of the summer's glory in the windows. BE CRAFTY Liven up dull window panels or slipcovers with a stamped pattern. Look for a large rubber stamp in a simple design, such as a poppy flower and stamp the fabric following a pattern. Mint is a super trendy shade. For another quick craft project, sew long, brightly colored summer scarves into bolster pillows.Add small tassels at the corners and you have a fun pillow unlike anything you can buy. with sisal, add cut pieces of sisal into empty white picture frames to create a focal point or message center. Cut a 15-inch length of half-inch rope and slip two fish eye hooks onto it. Knot each end and screw the hooks into a cabinet, wall or barbecue grill — anywhere you need to hang a kitchen towel or store barbecue tools. Use rope as a handle on a garden gate, wind it around your hurricane candles or fashion it into handles for a wooden serving tray. GO FOR PATTERN Certain patterns say summer and this summer the pattern is Ikat. Ikat is a dyeing technique that creates a bold, tribal- looking pattern that's often triangular in shape. Whether you choose a cool Dylan Ikat bath towel (PotteryBarn.com) or rooster-red Ikat cushions for your outdoor furniture (Kohls. com), your home will look stylish. Don't be afraid to mix patterns. Summer is all about putting multiple patterns together to create a fresh and unique twist. Pair an Ikat print with a bold zebra stripe or zesty neon to create some summer sizzle. Fill jars and vases with sand to evoke the beach, and add white candles. Shells, beach glass or pebbles from the shore will add even more seaside ambience. Or add water and beach pebbles to glass jars and top them off with floating candles. GET A ROPE Nothing says nautical — or summer — like rope, jute or sisal. Adding a touch of their natural feel in any room instantly evokes a beachy at- mosphere. Replace bathmats with sisal rugs, swap carpets

  • 15. HUNTINGTON NORTH SHORE TODAY / JULY 10, 2013 The Various Healthy Attributes of Soy Milk Individuals who have an intolerance to dairy products typically seek out alternatives to enjoy the foods and beverages they like. For example, those who cannot enjoy regular milk in their cereal or coffee often turn to soy milk to fill the void. However, those who understand the health benefits of soy may choose soy milk over other options whether they can tolerate dairy or not. Soy milk is made by soaking, grinding and boiling soybeans in water. A traditional beverage in parts of Asia for years, soy milk has only recently gained popularity in North America, where people turn to soy milk as a dairy alternative. Some vegetarians and vegans choose soy milk because they prefer a plant-based beverage alternative, but soy milk has nutritional attributes that can benefit anyone. protein and fiber were included in a person's diet. Soybeans also contain soluble fiber that helps prevent the absorption and metabolism of cholesterol. Unlike dairy milk, which is high in saturated fat, soy milk is comprised of mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. • Forms healthy bones. Soy products are naturally high in calcium or may be fortified with calcium. Soy also contains magnesium and boron, which are important for bone strength. In addition, soy foods contain isoflavones, which may inhibit the breakdown of bones. A 2005 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that intake of soy food was associated with a significantly lower risk of fracture, particularly among early post-menopausal women. • Aids in weight loss. Cow's milk has about 12 grams of sugar per cup, but soy milk has just seven grams of sugar per cup. Soy milk also has fewer calories than other milks and the fatty acids in soy milk can inhibit intestinal absorption of fat. • Helps prevent certain cancers. Of all the data supporting soy's role in cancer prevention, information on prostate cancer is the most promising. It is believed that soy milk is a rich source of phytoestrogen, which can inhibit testosterone in men and reduce their risk of prostate cancer. • Estrogen replacement. The same phytoestrogen that inhibits testosterone in men is an effective estrogen replacement for women. This can help postmenopausal women who have declining natural estrogen levels that may contribute to mood swings, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. • Strengthens blood vessels. There is evidence that the antioxidants and essential fatty acids in soy can protect blood vessels from lesions and hemorrhages by binding to the walls of the blood vessels. Although there are many health benefits of soybeans, there are some risks. Different processing methods may result in unhealthy byproducts. Unfermented soy has a high amount of phytic acid, which may lead to lower absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. However, many people feel the benefits of soy outweigh the risks. For the best health benefits, look for soy products that are produced with nongenetically modified soy crops. - Metro Services • Improves cholesterol levels. One of the foremost benefits of soy milk is its role in lowering cholesterol and helping prevent heart disease. Research indicates a diet with significant soy proteins reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (also known as "bad" cholesterol) and triglycerides. In 1993, in a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers from Erdman & Potter reported a 12 percent drop in cholesterol when 20 to 25 grams of soy • PROFESSIONALS • NASSAU DISCOUNT RX Candian Meds North. • 17. HUNTINGTON NORTH SHORE TODAY / JULY 10, 2013 All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy Finishing Touch Home Improvements The Boathouse Waterside Café Why can some three year olds tell you all about their day in school, without any hesitations, while others are repeating words? Many children who experience periods of disfluency or stuttering between the ages of two and five are often described as anxious or nervous, because the words don’t easily flow out of their mouths. Pediatricians often say that children will grow out of this phase, but it is common for parents and children to become frustrated during that time. All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy uses the Lidcombe program to train parents to deliver treatment for stuttering in their child’s environment on a daily basis. This individualized program involves weekly visits to a speech language pathologist and follow-up activities for when the child is home. Many parents have been turning to All Island Speech and Stuttering Therapy’s Director, Lori Melnitsky, a trained speech pathologist, whose center offers speech and language therapy with a Lidcombe trained therapist, providing support, encouragement, family participation and an individually tailored, goal oriented treatment program. The combined services of a speech pathologist and the Lidcombe programresultinincreasedsuccessanddecreasedfrustration for children and their families. 7 Linda Lane, Plainview (516) 776-0184, allislandspeech.com. **** Do you feel like your house is missing that small detail to trulymakeityourdreamhome?Aretheresomeaspectsofyour home’s exterior design that you wish you could have touched uporfixed?FinishingTouchHomeImprovementswillsolve all of those problems for you and transform the subpar details of your house into the parts that will become your favorites. Joe’s Crab Shack 2555 Long Beach Road, Oceanside (516) 255-3705, joescrabshack.com After spending a long day at the beach, something about going to a seafood dinner just feels right. A casual, upbeat eatery is a fun way to spend the remainder of the evening and there is no need to tidy up after the beach has worn you out and left you looking less than your best. Joe’s Crab Shack is a fun, laid-back seafood restaurant that supplies each diner with their own individual napkin to wrap around their neck, because crabs, mussels and shrimp can make for a messy meal. Joe’s Crab Shack is an ideal location for families or groups of friends who are looking for a lot of laughs and quality food. Waiters in brightly colored shirts periodically perform line dances around the restaurant, and if it is your birthday — watch out! A girl celebrating her 23rd birthday was encouraged to wear funny props and run around the restaurant, while her large table of friends whipped out their cameras and screamed “Happy Birthday!” The Crazy-Good Crab Dip ($9.29) was loaded with crabmeat and was a big hit at our table — enjoyed by both seafood lovers and landlubbers. The Crab Nachos ($10.79) were piled high and difficult for one person to polish off on his or her own. It was loaded with ingredients and full of flavor. Both of these were great choices for a small taste of seafood, before the main course. We also found the Fried Calamari ($8.29) to be deliciously crispy, and the Great Balls of Fire ($7.69) — seafood and crab balls filled with jalapenos and cream cheese — were spicy and really whet our appetites. Next came a steampot full of Garlicky Mussels ($9.89), which were amazing and came with soft garlic bread to intensify the flavor. So much food was polished off already and the heart of the meal hadn’t even begun yet! One of our crab-lover friends delighted in feasting on the sweet King Crab ($34.99) and the fire-grill flavoring made it taste like it was hot off the backyard grill. Other flavors include spicy boil, garlic herb and Joe’s famous BBQ. The steampot dishes came with a fresh ear of corn and potatoes, and like the crab buckets, were time consuming to eat, but that is all part of the fun. The Orleans ($21.99), a full pound of spiced up crawfish, shrimp and Andouille sausage was enjoyed by all who chose it and The Samuel Adams ($25.49) was another winner. The sweet snow crab, clams, meaty lobster claws and smoked sausage dish was boiled in Samuel Adams Lager — which brings us to the drink menu. Each drink that came out was more beautiful than the next and they were the kinds of beverages you would enjoy at a beach resort. The Piña Colada came served in a large pineapple with whipped cream and diners are only allowed to order the hardcore Category 5 Hurricane twice. Desserts include unique choices, like the huge slice of chocolate cake between two graham crackers, a chocolate bar and marshmallows called the Campfire S’mores ($7.99). For a wonderful summer meal and an abundance of seafood and non-seafood choices, Joe’s Crab Shack is a fun-loving restaurant that welcomes any crowd. For the full experience, be prepared to dine for at least an hour and a half — and be ready for a wait; they don’t take reservations. Joe’s Crab Shack is open seven days a week for lunch through dinner. -Kristin Cacchioli
