Going Green
on the Green
TERRAVITA, page 4
By Bill Baucom
If boundless energy and enthusiasm
could be bottled and sold, its name
might be Colleen Minton. This N.C. na-
tive and mother of two has followed a
somewhat circuitous route to where
she now stands as founder and
promoter-in-chief of TerraVITA, a
local sustainable food and beverage
organization that will be hosting its
third Grand Tasting on the Green on
Saturday, November 3.
The event takes place on the
green at Southern Village from
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will
feature some of North Carolina’s
finest chefs. The common thread:
their commitment and dedication to
using locally grown ingredients in
their recipes – thus, sustain-
able food.

You’ve taken the 32 neces-
sary AP classes and completed
10,000 volunteer hours in order
to apply to the 49 top schools
in the country, including all of
the Ivy Leagues (and no, Duke
doesn’t count as an Ivy) in order
to complete the success track
you’ve laid out for yourself.
You’ve taken a million notes and
spent countless hours memoriz-
ing every detail of the Napole-
onic Wars in order to ace that
history test. But maybe you’ve
forgotten one thing: how to have
fun. So for you hard-working
high school students, here are
some fun ways to cut loose and
relax!
Check out a concert at the
Cat’s Cradle. Tickets are
relatively cheap and tend to fall
between $10 - $40. It provides
a modern venue where you
can head-bang to your heart’s
delight. Mipso, a local band of
UNC students, will be performing

their bluegrass music on November
3 for only $10. Passion Pit will be
at the Cradle Oct. 18 and tickets will
only be $24 in advance or $26 on the
night of the show. Temper Trap will
be coming on Oct. 16 for $20.
If just the memory of the North
Carolina summer heat has you
sweating, what’s better than a room
full of free ice you’re allowed to
slide around on? Try ice-skating at
the Triangle Sportsplex for only
$9! Sure, you may wind up with a
few bruises, but once you’re flying
around on the ice, there’s nothing
better. This kind of activity can be
a great thing for a big, fun group of
friends or it can be a romantic date
night with that cute girl from chemis-
try you’ve been trying to get.
The Mardi Gras Bowling Center
on Farrington Road has great specials
for cheap, fun bowling. For example,
Tuesday nights have $2 games and
$2 shoe rentals from 6 p.m. - 10
p.m. But if you can’t make it out on
a school night, Friday and Saturday
nights feature a live DJ, black lights,
and a laser light show for only $17
per person (including shoe rental)
from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. or $8 per
person, per game (not including shoe
rental).
If you’re a fan of UNC football or
football in general, a great way to
pass the afternoon is cheering on the
team at Kenan Stadium. Tickets can
be purchased for as little as $35. The
only requirements for attending a
game are a Carolina blue t-shirt and
the acceptance of a sore throat for
the next few days.
If nature is calling you in a more
literal sense, rent a campsite at
Jordan Lake for between $13 and
$25 a day depending on how deep
into the woods you’re willing to hike
and whether you want to have run-
ning water or not. Splitting this cost
among a group of friends brings it
down to a few dollars apiece and can
lead to a whole night of campfires,
scary stories, and best of all, s’mores!
However, make sure that a night
spent here is one that is only filled
with good clean fun because park
rangers are constantly on patrol in
the area.
In Carrboro, Glazed Expectations
only charges $8 plus the cost of the
piece of pottery you would like to
paint for as much time as you need
to design a new kitchen set or just a
fun new mug for your morning cof-
fee. If you’re feeling artsy and need
to dip your hands in some paint, this
is the place to do it.
Take a day trip to Frankie’s Fun
Park in Raleigh. You can play laser
tag or enjoy mini golf, bumper boats,
a fun house and much more. You
pay for each game you play or activ-
ity you participate in, but they’re all
priced under $8.
Spend a day with your friends hunt-
ing for that vintage look you’ve been
trying to achieve or maybe just some
new knick-knacks to have for the
long-awaited day when you’re deco-
rating your very own college dorm
room. Look out for signs for garage
sales around town and hunt through
those or hit up the PTA thrift shops
in Chapel Hill. One man’s trash is
another man’s treasure.

If you’re just looking for a fun way
to entertain yourselves at home, try
a poker night. You can jazz it up by
requiring James Bond attire or make
it a casual affair with friends. All you
need is a deck of cards and a good
poker face.
To make dinner more interesting,
organize a progressive dinner with
your friends. This can be done in
two ways. The first is to go to an
area with lots of restaurants, such
as Franklin Street, and do appetiz-
ers, dinner, and dessert at different
restaurants all along the street. The
second option requires capability in
the kitchen. If you or any of your
friends can do that, then the progres-
sive dinner can also be done by each
person making a course of the meal
at home and moving the group from
house to house with each course.
This is best done when everyone
lives relatively close to each other.
Another fun, food-related thing to
do is find a place to eat with a view
on Franklin Street and rate people’s
attempts at parallel parking. A prime
spot for this is the upstairs of McAli-
ster’s on a Sunday morning. You
and your friends can enjoy people’s
slow, jerky attempts and no one has
to know you yourself probably can’t
pull it off either.
And don’t forget, you can always
check out what’s going on at your
school. There will always be plays,
dances, and fundraising events pro-
vided by your teachers and friends,
so don’t forget to participate in those.
There’s always stuff going on, so
instead of sitting around wondering
what to do, get a group of friends to-
gether and check out one of the cool
events the area has to offer.

not what youWANT to hear…it’s aTRUST thing.”
