June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. I n t r o d u c t i o n

My family and I have lived in home in East Vancouver, on the outskirts of Burnaby for Nine years.
I have begun to wonder about my community and the organizations that take place within it. This
week I will be taking action and attempting to differentiate between the Public, Private, and
Voluntary Sectors in my community and their involvement in relation to coaching, physical
education, and recreation.
3. public SECTOR
BC Institute of Technology

4. 4
These are examples that I have found within my community of the Public Sector. They are all structures that house
education which attempts to “[enhance] the quality of life and well-being of citizens” (Lunn, n.d., p.3).These
elementary schools are free for students and, while BCIT has tuition fees for students, all of these institutions receive
government funding. They are accessible and necessary for society. The elementary schools are provided for the 5-12
year old age group for a general education while BCIT is provided for more specific areas of education for any age
group whose education is at the postsecondary level. They all contain fitness classes and sports teams for specific
training.
5. 5
These institutions in the public sector are connected to coaching, physical education, and recreation. They are subsidized
by the government to provide coaching for sport specific training and provide physical education classes for learning
further, general fitness and human movement. They are are also an example of recreation because “the municipal level of
government is the level in which the recreation needs of the general public are directly addressed through the offering of
recreation services” (Lunn, n.d., p. 4)
6. COMMERCIAL SECTOR
Anytime Fitness

(Revs Bowling, Websource:

7. 7
These are examples that I have found within my community of the Commercial Sector. They provide the service of
indoor commercial recreation. In an attempt of ultimately receiving a profit, these businesses fulfill the need for a
source for entertainment, physical fitness, and training. They receive funding from participants, and potential
sponsorships and advertising. REVS and Spartacus are owned by individuals while AnyTime Fitness is owned by a
corporation. They are all available to the general public.
8. 8
These businesses in the commercial sector are connected to coaching and recreation. Participants at these locations
can take part in general physical activity as recreation. Participants can also decide to have coaching in the form of
personal trainers who support the progression of one’s physical fitness and/or the progression of one in their sport
specific background training. Clearly, the commercial sector is profit-oriented but these businesses also are also “a
major contributor to the creation of capital, resources, and wealth within our society” (Lunn, n.d., p.7).
9. VOLUNTARY SECTOR

10. 10
These are examples that I have found within my community of the Voluntary Sector. They are “profit-making for
sustaining services” (Lunne, n.d., p.8) and in order to engage the public. They are owned by individuals or groups
and cater mostly to their local communities. They host clubs, events, and recreational activities such as aquatics,
training rooms, and gymnasium sports. Some employees are paid and most are volunteers.
11. 11
These establishments in the Voluntary Sector are connected to coaching and recreation. They have plenty of
recreational time for drop-ins, open gyms, and general admission. They also have coaching lessons available for
several different training, physical education, and sporting opportunities. The Voluntary Sector is “ now recognized as
critically important for addressing the needs of society, including leisure and recreation” (Lunne, n.d., p.10).
12. C o n c l u s i o n
I have been able to distinguish specific examples of the three different sectors within my
community. I have also been able to clarify the relationship between these individual entities
and coaching, physical education, and recreation. I have gained a lot more knowledge of my
surrounding community
