(National Research Council, 2009, 2012; Durlak, Weissberg,
Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011; Goleman, 2005;
Greenberg et al., 2003)

about school
For every one-point increase in a child's social competency score in kindergarten, they were twice
as likely to obtain a college degree, and 46% more likely to have a full-time job by age 25.

SEL: Self Management
Strength: Self Control
Other studies have found that
students with high self-control get
better grades (Wolfe & Johnson,
1995), have fewer behavior problems
(Murphy & Eisenberg, 1997), and
demonstrate better social functioning
overall (Eisenberg, Fabes, Guthrie, &
Reiser, 2000).

Footprint

Be your very best, every day.
If some one is being bullied I can stand up for them
and use my bravery strength.
I tried to understand people better.
I used my curiosity to ask different questions about
things that I didn't understand.
The strength not to talk when somebody is talking
to me, so I don't get in trouble. Self control.
I used humor to cheer someone and felt refreshed
and proud of myself.
Plan:
The strength I will try is
prudence. My plan is to be
careful to get all of my
homework done and turned in
on time.
How it went:
I got things turned in on time
and finished. I think prudence is
a good character strength for
school.

Editor's Notes

  • #10 Who couldn’t use a little more strength? - Picture Often cited - 7 Strengths – related to Acad. Achievement, success, and happiness – Hope/Optimism, Gratitude, Social Intelligence, Curiosity, Perseverance/Grit, Creativity, Self-Control Can shape others as well - Growth Mindset. Can be learned – teachable/learnable = learned, practiced, cultivated
  • #11 Quote by David Cooperrider – Father of Appreciative Inquiry Strengths “deliver” 3 “outputs” simultaneously in one fell swoop.  They deliver “goodness” – expression of CS contributes to the common good.  They deliver practical results for the individual such as improved performance, life satisfaction, etc.  And, they deliver well-being that derives from authentic self-expression.
  • #12 4:35 Around the time you were in Middle school – maybe upper elementary or early high school if need be. Tumultuous years when our identities are being shaped. When relationships are critically important to us. Who made a difference in your life at that time? What strengths did they recognize? Not that you were good at throwing a ball or reading, but one of your inner strengths. How did they call them forth? What impact did this have? Is this a strength that you still value/use?” Share with your new elbow partner. Ask a few to share out with the group.
  • #13 4:40 Strengths Strips Pass out to each row. Provide directions – ask them to work with their elbow partners or stand up and cluster. Remind them of their provided chart – or they can reference the one on Thinglink. Ask for reactions at the conclusion of the activity.
  • #14 4:45 – Let’s take a quick look at some of the resources I’ve put together for you -including some student-created products I found on the web! Show two student sketches and part of the CS video as examples. Highlight value of each.
  • #18 Students who are self-aware - know who they are/how to maximize strengths, know how to manage themselves and relate well with others; make good decisions for there future.
