LESSON OBJECTIVES: TO COMPLETE
RESEARCH INTO RELEVANT PRODUCTS
AND YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE.
RESEARCH
The main research for your Advanced Portfolio should be
completed and uploaded to your blog by Friday the 19th of
July.
This consists of:
• 3 analyses of relevant music videos or trailers
• analysis of 2 similar products for both ancillary tasks
• audience research (questionnaire, focus group, interviews
and results)
RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR
PRODUCTS – MAIN TASK
You need to have analysed 3 relevant products for your main
task production (music videos or trailers from a relevant genre).
Analysis 1 – detailed analysis illustrated with still images.
Analysis 2 – video analysis.
Analysis 3 – analysis of 7 key stills from the video.
For each analysis you are focusing on the use of the 4 technical
areas, conventions of genre and form, narrative, and
representation.
These should be uploaded to your blog by the end of the day
THURSDAY 11th of July.
RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR
PRODUCTS – ANCILLARY
TASKS
Ancillary Tasks:
Film Trailer – front cover of a film magazine, film poster.
Music Video – magazine advert for album, digipak.
You need to analyse at least 2 relevant examples for each
ancillary task from your chosen genre.
Print analysis focuses on the effect of fonts, colours, image, and
layout. You should also identify conventions of form and genre.
Remember to try to use a range of presentational methods.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
The best audience research is on-going throughout the
production process. You should aim to get regular feedback
on your planning and initial versions of your products.
Preliminary audience research:

• focus group and summary
• interviews

AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Questionnaire – the purpose of the questionnaire is to identify
the demographic (age, gender) of your target
audience, psychographic information (hobbies and
interests), and what they find appealing/expect in your product.
Focus group – ask members of your target audience to discuss
what they like/dislike in examples of similar products.
Interviews – interview members of your target audience about
their views of the genre.
Use a range of methods of presentation – e.g. online surveys.
