Adolescence covers ages 10-19, a time of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. Adolescent reproductive health refers to physical and emotional well-being including freedom from unwanted pregnancy and STIs. Teen pregnancy is a major issue, with 21 million unintended pregnancies annually in low-income countries including over 500 daily in the Philippines. While adolescents are risk-takers, teen pregnancy carries health risks for both mother and baby like eclampsia and low birth weight. Early sexual encounters can also lead to consequences like STIs, school dropout, and curtailed life options. Proper education is needed to prevent problems with adolescent reproductive health and unwanted teen pregnancy.
