"Good architecture is a fusion of emotion and intellect." These are the words of architect Jugal Kishore Chowdhury who was a pioneer of modern architecture in India. He belonged to the first generation of architects and planners in the post-Independence era. Known for his monumental concrete buildings, he was honoured with Padma Shri - the fourth highest civilian award - by the President of India in 1977. Chowdhury was also a recipient of Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal from the Indian Institute of Architects in 1994 for his contribution to Indian architecture.

Nijo jo Castle, Kyoto
Nijo Castle was built by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603 for the defence of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and to serve as an official residence for visiting shoguns. It was greatly expanded and renovated in 1626. The former Katsura-no-miya Palace, built in 1847, was removed from its original site and rebuilt in Nijo Castle’s Honmaru or main enclosure.

Eclecticism was an architectural style in the late 19th century where elements from previous historical styles were combined to create new and original designs. Different eclectic styles incorporated elements from Gothic, Oriental, Beaux-Arts, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. The Garden City movement, led by Ebenezer Howard, promoted planned communities surrounded by greenbelts with separate areas for residences, industry, and agriculture. Two early examples were Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City in England. Radburn, New Jersey was an early garden city in America designed to separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
