Thisbuildinghasmull-funcconsuchasmusicals,exhibiion,celebratory,performancesandmusicals.
Italsoagoodplaaormforlocalresidentstogatheringwhichisalsoagoodopportunitytoletthem
enjoytherecreaaonalevents.

ppeople.Italsohadafaceliitointorenovaanggivingtheexteriorablacklavishlook.
Asthearchitectwhodesignedthisbuildingwasunabletoidentified,ithasassumeddesignedby
Dato’KingtonLoo,whichisalsothearchitectofDewanTunkuCanselorUniversiiMalaya.

TheaveragetemperatureinPetalingJayais27.0°C.About2438mmofprecipitaaonfallsannually
Onaverage,thetemperaturesarealwayshigh.

August,September,October,NovemberandDecember.

buildings.

Zone1wherethefrontsectionoftheseatsislocated,

Zone3wheretheseatsarelocatedonthebalcony.Differentzoneshavedifferent
acousticalpropertiesaffectingthemduetodistancesandformoftheauditorium.
TThesewillbefurtheraddressedinthelaterpartofthereport.
Architecturalacoustics
Thestudyofhowsoundsarereflectedinrooms,islargelyconcernedwithhowindirect
soundchangesthequalityofthesoundswehearinrooms.Themajorfactoraffecting
indirectsoundistheamountofsoundisabsorbedbythewalls,ceiling,andfloorofthe
room.Ifmostofthesoundisabsorbed,thentherearefewsoundreflectionsandlittle
indirectsound.Ifmostofthesoundisreflected,thentherearemanysoundreflections
anandalargeamountofindirectsound.Anotherfactoraffectingindirectsoundisthesize
andshapeoftheroom.Thisdetermineshowsoundhitssurfacesandthedirectionsin
whichitisreflected.

Conclusion:
Theidentificationofthesesoundsourceswhicharenoisewillenableustojustifyif
acousticalinterventionshavebeentakentoreducenoisethroughsoundabsorption,
diffusion,andtoimproveincidentsoundsfromthestagethroughsoundreflectionetc.
ThesewillbediscussedinouranalysiswhereacousticalperformanceofthePJCC
auditoriumasawholewillbestudied.
SSoundReinforcementSystem
Duetothenatureofalargeauditorium,soundreinforcementsystemisusedto
accommodatethelargevolumewheresoundisbetterheardacrosstheaudience,
especiallyinareaswhichhavesoundshadows.PJCCauditoriumusesacentrallylocate
system,whichiscommonamongmanyotherauditoriums,withasingleclusterofloud
speakersoverasoundsource.Thissystemgivesmaximumrealismastheamplifiedsound
comesfromthesamedirectionasoriginalsound.Additionalsoundspeakersarelocatedat
tthesidewallsoftheauditoriumforsoundtobedirectedtozoneslocatedatthefurther
endoftheauditorium.

Anauditoriumdesignwhichincludesabalconyisusuallyusedtodecreasethedistance
fromthestagetoseatingareasandtoprovideunobstructedviews.
Thefrontofabalconyparapetshouldbedesignedtoavoidstrongreflectionsthatcould
affectsoundqualityinthefrontseatingareas.Hence,theplanviewofthebalconyusually
hasaconcaveshape.
SoundPath:GeneralPrinciples&Application
Ontheotherhand,wallsaroundanauditoriumareencouragedtobesplayedortiltedto
avoidparallelism.Thiswillavoidflutterechoesfromtakingplace.Anglescanalsobe
advantageouslyusedtodirectreflectedsoundtotheaudienceseatingarea,andtoprovide
diffusion.Anysurfacethatintroducesundesirableangleshouldbecoveredwithabsorptive
materialtoreduceacousticaldefects.
Controlofsoundareusuallyinfluencedbytheformandthematerialityusedinthespace.
Themostdifficultaspectofhalldesignistheambiguityofthegoalitself,wheredifferent
usage,basedonfunction,oftheauditoriumhavedifferentacousticalrequirements.

Wallsinfrontofanauditoriumareusuallyflat,toproducestrongearlyreflectionsthatare
integratedwiththedirectsoundtoenhanceitbeforereachingtheaudience.Thedepth
ofthefrontstageisusedtoachieveproperblendofsoundsfromvariousinstrumentsand
voicesbeforedistributingtotheaudience.
Convex-surfacedceilingspreventsflutterechoes
Ceilingheightisusuallydeterminedbytheoverallroomvolumethatisrequired.
Aceilingthatistoohighinaroommaycreateundesirablelatereflections.
Toavoidpotentialflutterecho,theceilingshouldnotbeparalleltothefloor.
Instead,itshouldbegeometricallydesignedtodirectsoundtotherearofthe
hallortodiffuseitthroughoutthehall.

ppreventsoundconcentrationwhichisanunwantedacousticaldefect.

PJCCAuditorium hasafan-shapedplanwithbalconylayout
Wewillnowlookathowtheselectionofmaterialsalsoaffecttheacoustical
propertiesoftheauditoriumshownbelow.
Soundreflectionoccurswhensoundisbouncedoffasurface.Thisusually
occursonflat,rigidsurfaceslikeconcreteorbrickwalls.Soundwavesthatare
unabletopenetrateveryfarintothesurfacecausesthewavetoricochetback
againstitsdirection.
Thestagelocatedatthefronthasflatsurfaces.
Thisistoproducestrongearlyreflectionsthatareintegratedwiththedirect
ssoundandenhanceit.
Onthecontrary,stronglatereflectionsandreverberationatthewallsofthe
audiencelevelarenotappreciated.Inotherwords,thestageareaandfrontof
thehallaregenerallymadereflectivewhileabsorptionofsoundisplacedinthe
seatingareaandreaofthehall.
SoundDiffusion
Sounddiffusionisimportantinroomacousticsbecauseconstantstrong
reflectionofsoundwaveswillcreateundesirablesoundeffect.Sounddiffusion
helpsbreakthewavepatternintoseveralotherdirectionswhichdepletesits
energyfaster.Whenasoundwavehitsanirregularsurfacesuchasthecarpet,
thevibrationbreaksupanddividestheenergyofthewaveintosmallerpaths.
IInPJCCauditorium,timberstrippanelsandcarpethelpdiffusesoundbetter,
reducingstrongreflectionfromconstantlybouncingoffwithinthespace.

space.Thedesigncouldbeimprovedby
introducingsoundlockwhichactsasa
bufferzonewheresoundfromthetoilet
ccouldslowlydissipatewithoutentering
theauditorium.Entrancescouldalso
includesoundlocksothatmovements
inandoutoftheauditoriumwillnot
createsignificatenoisewhichdisturbs
theatmosphereoftheauditorium.

ttofurtherdampenthesoundwave

CONCLUSION

AUDITORIUMSDEPENDSALOTON ITSACOUSTICDESIGN WHICHINCLUDES
THEAUDITORIUM LAYOUTANDTHETYPESABSORPTION MATERIALSUSED.

SOUNDANDTO ELIMINATENOISEANDUNDESIREDSOUND.
