Defense Mechanisms And The Defense Mechanism
Everyone has a few coping techniques to reduce anxiety from unacceptable or even harmful impulses.
These coping techniques are performed unconsciously and they are known as defense mechanisms.
When a body uses a defense mechanism they are attempting to distort, deny, or manipulate their
reality to defend their self schema. There are a few different types of defense mechanisms many of
which classified by Anna Freud that would later appear in the works of Sigmund Freud. The
psychiatrist George Eman Vaillant introduced a way of organizing the mechanisms into a system of
levels. The level system is as follows: level I is about pathological defences, level II explains
immature defences, level III neurotic defences, and lastly level IV mature defences. An individual
could use multiple different defense mechanisms from different levels though. For example a person
could be using an immature defense mechanism such as regression and a mature mechanism like
humor. This essay will delve into the description of these levels and the defense mechanisms they
contain. Pathological defenses usually occur from someone who unconsciously preserves their
traditional aspects of life. They will think very totalistic and rigidly since they are trying to preserve
what they believe they won t make any compromises. One pathological defense mechanism would be
projection. Projection occurs when someone has a value that says they should act a certain way, then
their value is challenged and

The youth were in a set of classrooms in another building. We finally made our way to the auditorium,
and there were many people in what looked like the lunchroom for this high school. All sitting around
tables just waiting to go be seated in the main auditorium. The band was still working on the sound
details so we were not allowed to be seated yet. The pastors would walk around and welcome
everyone. As I was told everyone was wearing just what was comfortable nothing to fancy, that make
me feel better. Except for the fact that my younger cousin asked me if I was going skiing after church
because I was like one of the few wearing Jeans and a cardigan. After a few more laughs it was time to
make our way in and find our seats. For me at my church I have my side and few aisles that I mainly
stick to every Sunday, so when we went two rows from the stage I was a little out of my element. As
we walked in the lights were dim and the first thing you see is this huge beautiful painting of Jesus.
Then you see the monitors on each side of the stage and then the band starts to welcome us. One thing
about seating that I thought was different was they had ushers and ropes closing sections off. All the
rows in the front had to be filled before the next section was to be opened. Great way to make sure
you have everyone close to the front. The band leads us

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Diagnostic Imaging
INTRODUCTION
Modern medicine has undergone major advancements over the past years. One of these developments
include the capacity to retrieve crucial information about the human body and its health beyond the
use of manual diagnostic techniques. This is referred to as Medical or Diagnostic Imaging.
Medical or Diagnostic Imaging refers to the various techniques that can be used to see inside the
human body. Its non invasive nature means that the body does not have to be opened up surgically for
medical practitioners to view the organs anatomically. In clinical settings, it can be used to aid in the
diagnosis or treatment of different ailments. Many kinds of medical imaging techniques have already
been developed, each with their own advantages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early diagnosis provided by its sophisticated technology saves countless patient lives, and without its
help, we wouldn t have been able to develop cures or treatments for many diseases. Its ability to
monitor subtle changes in patients that would otherwise be missed by unassisted human eyes is also a
hallmark of modern clinical practice.
The radiograph, one of the most common diagnostic imaging tools utilized in this field, possesses a
very important component called contrast. Contrast helps radiologists perceive image detail and glean
information from the area of interest. Radiation Technologists, or Rad Techs, should always ensure
that radiographs have the right amount of contrast so that the radiologist can easily read them for
faster diagnosis.
In terms of education, enormous equipment and expensive yet high quality machines have always
surrounded the College of Medical Radiation Technology (or CMRT). However, it is not just about the
cost but also about their effectiveness and usefulness for the CMRT students. With these machines,
students get to have hands on activities that prepare them for when they take their internship in
hospitals and as future health

Ehlers Dalos Syndrome Research Paper
Not many people know of the problem that affects every cell and causes pain called EDS. EDS stands
for Ehlers Danlos syndrome. It is a genetic disorder which means that it runs in a family. It can cause
pain and even organ rupture. Lastly, there is no cure only medications to take that make it less severe.
Ehlers Danlos syndrome has many different types with unique qualities. The most dominant type,
hypermobility type, causes subluxation, dislocation and even tears in the joints. Vascular type, which
is regarded as the most serious type, can cause organ or arterial rupture. Classical type has most of the
qualities of Hypermobility type as well as hyperextendability of the skin. This is just to name a few of
the six predominant types of EDS.
Lots of people have Hypermobility type without even knowing it. One of the symptoms for
hypermobility type of EDS is Cronin pain, people with EDS have to struggle with this pain each and
every day. Another symptom is dislocations, or when something comes out of its proper place in the
body, and the breaking of bones. Along with this form of EDS it is linked with potheraul orthostatic
tachycardia syndrome. This causes the blood pressure to plummet and all blood rush to the feet
causing someone to loose conciseness. Most people who are diagnosed are women because this
disease is harder to find in males. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People with EDS can be put on any number of medications depending on their symptoms. Some
people have gastric issues and needs medication for that and some barely need medication at all.
Along with having no cure, there are not a lot of doctors who specialize in EDS and because of this
people are often misdiagnosed. According to (insert website here) about 200,000 cases are diagnosed
per year, but most doctors who are familiar with EDS think that even more are misdiagnosed. They are

Lymphangiomas
Lymphangiomas Recently physicians at Lucile Packard Children s Hospital at Stanford found a
potential treatment to Lymphangiomas. Lymphangiomas is the overgrowth of the lymph channels,
which can cause airway constriction, and other aspects to the heart and lung function. The lymphatic
systems function is to filter out pathogens in the blood. Vessels of the lymphatics are a one way
system allowing fluids to come in but not to flow out. The issue lies in when these lymph vessels
swell or begin to back up. In the case of lymphangiomas, these channels swell and get abnormally
large. At Stanford, a common drug used for erectile dysfunction called sildenafil has been found to
treat symptoms of lymphangiomas. The topic that is now up for debate is that if the use of sildenafil or
commonly known Viagra should be used as a treatment for lymphangiomas in children and infants.
The aftermath of using sildenafil has many effects that can be consider positive. Sildenafil has and is
being used to treat erectile dysfunction, which is due to not enough blood, pumped to the penis or
there being a blockage in blood being pumped to the penis. Sildenafil is also being used to treat high
blood pressure in the lung. By looking at this information, individuals can see that sildenafil has the ...

The Lost Boys Metaphors
Teenagers as metaphors for Vampires
Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It s fun to be a vampire. (The Lost Boys,
1987). The tagline to Joel Schumacher s 1987 film, The Lost Boys, glorifies the allure of being a
member of the undead. The transformation into a teenager, or vampire, are both marked by a turbulent
time of sexual development, peer pressure, and is an important phase in the formation of their identity.
In literature, and in film, the vampire can be perceived as the perfect metaphor for a teenager due to
the parallel nature that they both share and the hardships they endure.
One of the biggest changes during adolescence is that of sexual development, and young adults are
constantly fighting these powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Michael starts out as an ordinary teen at the beginning of the film, but after encountering David and
the Lost Boys, he decides to change his look in attempts to fit in with them and impress Star. In the
boardwalk scene, a tracking shot is used to follow Michael as he checks himself out after buying a
dark leather jacket and walks over to the booth where he wants to get his ear pierced. Wearing dark
sunglasses soon becomes part of his bad boy image, and his mother starts to complain that he is
staying out until the middle of the night and sleeping in all day (Schumacher Bros,1987).
Another instance where rebellion occurs, is when the teenage vampires kill the security guard from the
boardwalk merry go round. By removing the only male and parental authoritative figure (with the
exception of Max, the head vampire and video store owner), the Lost Boys bring about the absence of
competent adult males. As David, the leader of the Lost Boys puts it We do what we want, Michael.

The Formation Of A Contract
A contract is an agreement between people or legal entities (such as corporations) in which one party
agrees to perform a service or provide goods in exchange for the payment of money or other goods or
services. A binding, legally enforceable contract can be in writing or oral. The formation of a contract
is accomplished when there is an offer and acceptance between the contracting parties of the exchange
of consideration, something of value. This offer and acceptance are occasionally referred to as a
meeting of the minds. If the parties have not reached a meeting of the minds, then there is no
agreement. Like any other contract, the primary features for the creation of a marriage contract are
offer and acceptance. When Victoria ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By giving a ring as promise ring, inviting Emily to Florida any by Emily accepting the ring, both
Victoria and Emily entered into a bilateral contract. 0% Issues One key issue for this case is Breach of
Contract . By giving the engagement ring and promising to Emily a better life in Florida, and asking
her to move to Florida and Emily accepts the ring, a Bilateral contract was created. When Victoria
went back on her promise she breached the contract. Also by not mentioning to Emily that she was
still married is a clear act of fraud by Victoria. Breach of Contract Both unilateral and bilateral
agreements are enforceable in the courts. The agreements change the status of the parties to it. The
reverse is possible too. Breach of contract can occur due to many reasons. With the bilateral
agreement, both the parties will suffer if the agreement is not fulfilled. It is more of a symbiotic
relationship. A breach of engagement to marry is a cause of action in some jurisdiction. Some states
have taken the exemption to this. Florida is one of these states. Victoria s promise to marry Emily is
treated as a legally binding contract. When a breach is committed to such promise, an action will lie
for damages. An action for breach of a promise to marry is predicated upon the proposition that
Victoria has breached an existing valid contract to marry. A breach of a

Political Leadership And Its Importance
1. Theoretical Definition
Being a leader is a complex fate. Although contradictions and clashing expectations are part of life,
they are especially present in the exercise of leadership (Cronin and Genovese 2012, 1).
Political leadership is a broad multidimensional phenomenon that has been analyzed through various
lenses; yet there is no one concrete definition. In the following response, I will present a brief
overview of my interpretation through which I have come to understand political leadership and its
importance. Then, I will examine the relevance of the typologies and authors we have considered in
relation to political leadership.
When thinking about leadership, it is important to ask ourselves, can one measure ... Show more

Although Sandberg s framework can be useful in the business world, I find that studying political
leadership strictly from a gender based approach could be insufficient. Regardless of his/her gender, a
leader is an individual that possesses the necessary characteristics that will make or break his/her
leadership. In her book, The Power of Latino leadership, Juana Bordas offers culture based analysis of
leadership. Although her book focuses on Latino culture, I find some of the leadership principles that
she offers, relevant in trying to define political leadership. For example, Personalismo (The Character
of the Leader) is a leadership principle that explores leaders abilities to connect with people and
embody traits that will exemplify trust and respect in relation to their followers (Bordas 2013, 8).
Juntos (we are together) describes the collective and collaborative nature of leadership (Bordas 2013,
10). The leader works hand in hand with his/her followers to achieve the desired common end results
(Bordas 2013, 10).
These two principles presented by Bordas are strongly related to James MacGregor Burns account of
transforming leadership. He describes transforming leadership as a collective process where leaders
and followers empower each other to fulfill the wants and the needs of the people (Burns 2003, 2).
Burns argues that deep and durable change, guided and measured by values, is the ultimate purpose of
transforming leadership, and

It Goes Into A Landfill
Most people don t think about where their trash goes after the garbage trucks empty the trash bins. It
goes into a landfill, which is a carefully engineered and managed structure and acts as a final disposal
option for waste ( Solid Waste Agency ). The purpose of a landfill is to bury trash in a way that it will
be isolated from groundwater, will be kept dry, and will not come into contact with air. Under these
conditions, the excess waste does not decompose very much (Freudenrich). Many objects that are
thrown into the trash, which end up into a landfill, can actually be recycled. 20% of the items in
landfills can be recycled, and another 25% are compostable, and a further 16% are recoverable
(Curiosity Quest). A total of 61% of the landfill can be diverted to better use.
Since most Americans don t know about what objects can be recycled, or just ignore the recycle
labels, the objects end up in a landfill. In the U.S, people produce about 4.6 pounds of trash per person
per day, which equates to 251 million tons of trash per year (Freudenrich). This is slightly less than all
the other countries trash combined (Alabama Environmental Council). Most of this trash is buried in a
landfill, and the rest is recycled, composted, and burned (Freudenrich). 81.8 million tons of trash in
2006 could have been recycled or composted, but were instead sent into a landfill (Freudenrich).
One of the significant products that contribute to the problem are textiles; most specifically shoes.

Canada is a multi cultural country as it is home to many races and ethnicities. As of 2011, the ethnicity
with the largest number of population is none other than Filipinos. According to www.cic.gc.ca (2012)
Filipinos are in the first place as having the largest population of immigrants who are permanently
residing in Canada. The growth of Filipinos living in Canada has been showing a positive trend, as
there are only 11,011Filipinos in 2002 as compared to the 34,991 permanent Filipino residents in

customers who probably have the same customer base with customers in Philippines would benefit

Canada is another opportunity for Jollibee to deliver a taste of home to Canadian Filipino residents.

Globalization has a great impact on today s economy. The differences of accounting regulations and

In order to adapt to the increasingly global business environment, public companies in Canada will

1. COMPARABILITY
1.1 Definition of comparability
According to Canadian GAAP, the definition of comparability is Financial information measured and
reported in a similar manner among different companies. Comparability allows analysts to identify
real economic similarities and differences among companies, because those differences and
similarities are not obscured by changes in accounting methods or disclosure practices.
In September 2007, the IASB issued a revised IAS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements , in which
the definition of comparability was expanded to include consistency with regard of the definition of
Canadian GAAP. The definition of comparability in IAS 1 is Users need to be able to identify

Animal Farm By George Orwell Essay
Animal Farm is of course, a satirical allegory, very specifically of the Russian Revolution and of
Stalin (Napoleon in the book), but more generally of revolution, the idealism of utopias, and the way
in which people take control of societies founded on principles of equality. It is a satirical allegory of
Soviet totalitarianism. Orwell based major events in the book on ones from the Soviet Union during
the Stalin era. Orwell, a democratic socialist, and a member of the Independent Labour Party for many
years, was a critic of Stalin, and was suspicious of Moscow directed Stalinism after his experiences in
the Spanish Civil War. In Animal Farm George Orwell demonstrates the psychological foundation of
revolution, its processes and the irony of displacement of an oppressive regime by the new
revolutionary order. The revolution is hardly complete before differences appear and so idealistic
intentions are progressively undermined by the assumption of total authority by the pigs. The pigs did
not actually work but directed and supervised the others.
Orwell intended Animal Farm to be a strong condemnation of what he saw as the Stalinist corruption
of the original socialist ideals. He, in the two books, is obsessed with the idea of revolution directly or
indirectly. He described what gave him the idea of setting the book on a farm:
I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge carthorse along a narrow path, whipping it
whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if

Puppy Mills Have Been Notorious For Keeping The Puppy...
Puppy mills have been notorious for keeping the puppy trade industry alive and as big as it is today.
With thousands of puppy mills, both known and under the radar, they provide easy access and cheap
puppies to sell at pet stores at inflated prices. While they do keep the business booming and keep pure
breeds that may specialize in important roles, they continue to put countless numbers of dogs through
terrifying pain. To stop the agonizing torture the lovable pups go through, stricter rules must be
applied to these puppy mills, a new license regulation must be used, regular inspections, and
awareness of alternative options must be made. With already set regulations on puppy mills, people
say there is no reason to have any additions on the rules. There is a kennel license, which restricts how
many dogs someone can have depending on how much square footage of land he or she owns. This
regulates the amount of dogs that can be held for breeding and to keep the area clean and safe enough
for all the dogs involved. People are required to go through a moderately long process to achieve their
license, to ensure that these dogs will be okay. Puppy mills are also known for keeping pure breed
numbers up, such as beloved German shepherds, poodles, Welsh Pembroke corgis, and Labradors.
Having mixed breeds can be healthier of course but as Sofia Jeppsson had said in her article Purebred

can get chips in a bowl and pour some of it on top or you can get Cabbage and pour on top to get that
added flavor for the veggies. You can use other veggies and just make it a dip. This is one of the top

Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
Catcher in the Rye is one of the most famous books in American literature. Written by J. D. Salinger, it
captures the epitome of adolescence through Salinger s infamous anti hero, Holden Caulfield. Holden
Caulfield learns about himself and his negative tendencies, and realizes that if he does not do
something to change his perspective, he may end up like his acquaintance James Castle whom he met
at Elkton Hills. Holden tries to find help to mend his outlook on life through Mr. Antolini so he does
not end up like James, who did not want to face the problems he created for himself. This is proven by
the similarities between James Castle and Holden, Mr. Antolini s willingness to try and help Holden,
and Holden s future being forecasted by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While talking to Holden, Mr. Antolini says, This fall I think you re riding for it s a special kind of fall,
a horrible kind. The man permitted isn t allowed to feel or hear himself hit bottom (187). Mr. Antolini
is implying that Holden will not realize when he has reached an all time low. Mr. Antolini is also
implying that somehow if Holden keeps going on this downward path down, he could possibly even
end up dead as well, however that might happen. Mr. Antolini is trying to warn him of this fall and try
to help him, before he hits the ground. Mr. Antolini was not able catch James Castle and is trying to
make sure the same thing does not happen to Holden. Mr. Antolini says to Holden, So they gave up
looking. They gave it up before they ever really even got started (187). Mr. Antolini is telling Holden
that he has not hit the bottom of his fall yet. He still has time left to turn his life around before it is too
late. James Castle jumped out the window and gave up on life, even though it did not have to be the
end. In Catcher in the Rye, Phoebe makes Holden realize that he must change his ways in order
prevent himself from creating a motif of James life. When Holden visits Phoebe, she figures out that
Holden got kicked out of Pencey, and all she kept saying was, Daddy s gonna kill you (165). Phoebe is
genuinely concerned for her brother, and tries to help him. Even though she does not

The Zoo Story by Edward Albee Essay
The Zoo Story by Edward Albee
In Edward Albee s play, The Zoo Story, Jerry tells Peter bizarre stories about people he has
encountered that influence his shallow and lonely existence, to demonstrate Albee s view that society
is unnecessarily consumed by indifference, unkindness, weakness, and emptiness. In an attempt to
cause Peter to realize that his own life is filled with emptiness and shallowness, Jerry tells Peter about
the lives of some of the people in his boarding house. He talks about the colored queen, the Puerto
Rican family, the landlady, and the woman who cries all the time, in hopes of causing Peter to
compare the meaninglessness of his life to their lives. In doing this, Jerry hopes Peter will realize that

Albee is commenting that people need to foster their inner selves in addition to what they allow others
to see on the outside.
Another interesting piece of information that Jerry presents to Peter about the colored queen is that he
always leaves the door open when he is plucking his eyebrows. Not only does this reinforce the fact
that he is self absorbed and materialistic, but it tells something about the inside of his persona as well.
The act of plucking one s eyebrows is quite painful, and the fact that he leaves his door open when
committing this act of self mutilation reflects the idea that he wants society to be aware of his inner
pain and strife. People are constantly looking for sympathy and for others to tell them that everything
will be all right. The colored queen is no different. He wants people to be aware that he feels pain.
Keeping his door open shows that he, like the rest society, is crying out for help, and wants to be
noticed and cared for.
While the colored queen represents the part of society that wallows in their own self pity, Albee points
out through the use of other minor characters that there are other ways of avoiding pain, and dealing
with that pain. The Puerto Rican family that lives in Jerry s building tries to escape pain instead of
dealing with it or looking for help. Their method is avoidance. They avoid pain by constantly having
fun. Jerry mentions that they entertain a lot, and it

The Concept of Comparative Advantage
The comparative advantage The concept of the comparative advantage was first coined in 1817 by
economist David Ricardo, in his On the principles of political economy and taxation. The underlying
idea of the comparative advantage theory is that the countries possess different resources and
capabilities and they can produce some specific items in a more efficient manner than other countries
can produce the same items, or more efficiently that the same country can produce other items. In such
a setting then, the countries would best decide to produce the items for which they possess a
comparative advantage, and then exchange them within the international market place, for items for
the production of which they do not possess a comparative advantage (Pullen, 2006). Today, the
application of the comparative advantage is revealed mostly at the level of the leading economic
powers in the world, who seek to create advantages in terms of exports, and as such maximize their
gains (Acharya, 2008). The concept and application of the comparative advantage theory has raised
vast interest throughout the past century, and this interest is revealed at both theoretical and well as
practical level. Furthermore, as the modern day society becomes more and more engaged in
globalization and market liberalization, the application of the comparative advantage theory is gaining
more momentum. Within the economic literature for instance, various researchers have approached
the issue of the

The And Of The Business
Alex, Bill, Carl, Devon, and Xavier are all Christians and want their business to be organized and
operated in accordance with the Christian worldview. Alex, Bill, Carl, and Devon father ran the
business as a sole proprietorship, but they want to form a business entity to own the farm. I am going
to be their accountant to help run their business the proper way and right way as Christians should.
They are trying to avoid a lot of paperwork, but they also wants to allow their cousin Xavier to handle
the day to day operations of the farm. Additionally, they want to know ways to minimize their taxes on
the entity. They want to keep this a family business; they do not want a stranger owning any part of
the business. I think this can be a great thing if their family is on one accord and want to expand the
business. When you start having outsiders, they could come in a try to turn things around within the
business and make a lot of unnecessary changes. With Xavier being their cousin, I think they have a
plan that will make the business successful. As stated above, in this case the form of business
organization used by the deceased father is a sole proprietorship. A sole proprietor is someone who
owns an unincorporated business by himself or herself (Sole Proprietorship, 2015). This form of
business organization is a business in which one person is in control of the management and profits. A
sole proprietorship has its disadvantages and advantages. With sole proprietorship, you

The Brown Wasps Loren Eiseley Summary
There is no better phrase to describe a fond memory than an elusive dream . Something, that no matter
how much you struggle for can never be relived. It sits on the dual pillars of place and time, you may
conquer one but the other will always be there, to cause despair. This was the common struggle
experienced and expressed in The Brown Wasps and Once more at the lake . Throughout his essay,
Loren Eiseley describes different scenarios that he witnessed. All of which have a central theme of
change, not in times, but in the real, physical world. He talks about mice losing their little dream of
living in a burrow made in common earth, a world of seedpods and quiet, of green sheltering leaves in
the dim light among the weed stems and how they are coldly denied even the simplest of yearnings.
Later, he describes how he witnessed the figurative great river at an El in Philadelphia stop. The river
that was the lifeline of hundreds, maybe thousands of pigeons. How the pigeons kept returning lesser

outdoors now, who explores the streams, who gazes with childish awe at the thunderstorms, who runs
out in joy and relief to go swimming in the rain. And that it is time to move on and realise that he can t
relive those moments as the figurative right to do so, has moved on to the next generation. That in this
moment he can only be the father, no longer the son. The Brown Wasps has the writer experiencing
sorrow and despair due to a place, that is primary to his being, being non existent and thus, the essay

Pope John Chritianity
Discuss the relationship between at least TWO of the aspects shown in the diagram below and the way
they contribute to Christianity as a living religious tradition
The application of Christian ethics is a fundamental practice in an adherent s life, assisting them in
following God s will. The most important representation of these ethics being used in practice is by
the ultimate model of goodness, Jesus Christ. Jesus words and actions reflect the key foundations of
ethical teachings, such as agape love, compassion, and unity, through which he encouraged adherents
to live their lives by through his ministry. The application of these ethical teachings into modern
society, was catalyzed by Pope John XXIII. Throughout his 5 year papacy, pope ... Show more content

The presence of these key ethical teachings in modern society by pope johns attempts to reconnect
adherents to the original teachings of jesus, has therefore made Christianity a living religious tradition.
Ethical teachings highlight importance of unity within ones life. Unity is absolutely essential because
the church is the body of Christ and a body cannot be in disunity or disharmony with itself. Adultery is
prohibited in Christianity. The act of sexual intercourse is said to be between two people under the
union of god, with the intention of creating life. In pope john XXIII s encyclical Pacem in Terris he
expresses this ethical teaching by stating The family, founded upon marriage freely contracted, one
and indissoluble, must be regarded as the natural, primary cell of human society. The interests of the
family, therefore, must be taken very specially into consideration in social and economic affairs, as
well as in the spheres of faith and morals . Pope john XXIII applies the importance of this ethical
teaching in his encyclical, which reinforces the importance of unity through marriage, as it is a part of
the natural order between two people. By reinforcing the importance of family in marriage and why
this important bond should not be broken, it therefore encourages adherents out of adultery. However,
this encyclical has had

specifically, the businesses were clustered around Clark Street and Halsted Street. In 1997 Chicago s
Mayor, Richard M. Daley, officially recognized the area as a gay neighborhood. This area, now known
as Boystown, was the first gay neighborhood in the United States of America to be officially
recognized by the government. The same year city planners under the direction of the Mayor s office
devised a plan to create a streetscape that marked North Halsted Street as being a gay neighborhood.
This project was in line with similar projects in ethnic neighborhoods. For instance, the metal Puerto
Rican flag sculptures in Humbolt Park that were mentioned above were created as part of one of the
projects. The design for the streetscape included several pylons along North Halsted Street and, after
complaints that the pylons would mark connected areas as being gay, flower planters to mark side

Compare And Contrast The Wanderer And To Penshurst
1. Consider carefully both The Wanderer and To Penshurst. Do descriptions of the past have similar
qualities and effects in these two works? Why or why not? In answering this question, you will need
to consider carefully how each author invokes the past and why the past is important in each of these
texts.

Answer #1 The Wandered versus To Penshurst:
When comparing The Wanderer and To Penshurst, there are stark differences in the way the past is
evoked and viewed because the former is elegiac and the later is idyllic. On a basic level, The
Wanderer is a classic example of elegy because it expresses sadness over what the the Wandered has
lost as he laments for the death of an era in his life. This lamentation can been in the opening when the
Wanderer says Often the lone dweller longs for relief (1) or Therefore I don t know why my woeful /
heart should not wax dark (58 9). Essentially, the entire poem consists of the Wanderer waxing dark
about lost kin/wealth/loneliness and because of negativity he longs for relief. To Penshurst, on the
other hand, recalls glorious moments both past and present with an air of content nostalgia. To
Penshurst s narrator does this by actively addressing the country house through personification and
apostrophe which gives the property a sense of importance in identity. Penhurst is nearly depicted

New York City Analysis
New York City is the place where a person can be intimate with thousands of people all at once,
without having to talk or interact with them at all. Whether a person is standing in a crowded subway
cart or simply walking around Times Squares or Grand Central, it is almost impossible to get around
the city without having to see or engage with another person. New York City blends the concepts of
privacy and intimacy, creating an environment where one can be immersed and connected, in what E.
B. White describes, as a compact arena comprising of gladiators, evangelists, actors, traders and
merchants, yet also feel separated, or apathetic, to the city and its inhabitants as well. Whether it is the
eighteen inches described by White or simply sitting next to a stranger on the subway, what makes
New York City iconic and different from other cities is how its residents a mixture of locals that grew
up in the city, the tourists that visit it, and newly arriving residents from across the world interact with
one another in respect to city life. If a person tries, he or she can avoid talking to anyone all day,
despite the multitudes of people he or she encounters. On the other extreme, he or she can also get the
numbers, or contact information, of hundreds of people as well. In this perspective, New York City has
not changed much since White wrote his book Here is New York New York City still represents and

day is the beginning of many to come. After killing Tybalt in revenge, Romeo realizes that he will
have to face consequences for disturbing the peace again, possibly death. Romeo then blames fate for
this instead of his own actions saying O, I am fortune s fool! insisting that fate has made a fool of him.
This pattern of bad decisions made by emotional teenagers who blame the consequences on a larger
force themselves is repeated over and over again throughout the play up until the very end. At this
end, when analyzing the characters decisions in the play and where and when they blame fate, it is
obvious that the stars are not the reason that so many ends up dead in this tragedy. Instead, it is when
Romeo and Juliet decide to throw themselves into life with the mindset that it is not their fault of what
happens, but the fate that controls them and it is too late to change that. It is when Romeo, Juliet, and

Pros And Cons Of The Njac
Advocates for the government and several states have argued that the NJAC would improve judicial
selection and the quality of the judiciary and that the NJAC does not violate the basic structure. In
defending the NJAC, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi argued that expanding the appointment process
to include a more formal role for the law minister, along with two eminent persons, would help lead to
a more diverse and representative judiciary that is more accountable to the people. Also, the
government argued that a switch to the NJAC would improve the quality and merit of judicial
appointments, going so far as to impugn the merit of specific appointments under the collegium.
Furthermore, senior advocate K.K. Venugopal, representing the state of Madhya Pradesh, argued that
the NJAC did not violate the basic structure, as Article 124 has drafted conferred primacy on the

Radical interpretive exercises tread the thin line between judicial interpretation and legislative

came under severe criticism, following which the Supreme Court stepped back from its judgment in a
review petition.
Most importantly, some of the interpretive possibilities articulated here may have produced an
appointments process that closely resembles the existing collegium system. Thus, the NJAC could
become the collegium in disguise. If that would have happened, then, the Supreme Court would have
successfully struck down the amendment without being transparent about doing so.

A Raisin Of The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry
Lorraine Hansberry, a female playwright and black activist, spent almost all of her life dealing with
American racism, poverty, and lack of social mobility. As a person who witnessed the daily struggles
of African Americans, Hansberry wanted to expose the hypocrisy in the idea that America was the
land of equal opportunity. As a result, in 1959, Hansberry wrote the play, A Raisin in the Sun, which
details the Youngers, an African American family, who experienced racism, poverty, and the lack of
social mobility during the 1950s in Chicago s Southside. Throughout the play, the Younger family
members try to make their respective dreams come true and try to deal with the problems that
surround them. However, the process of one family member achieving his or her own dream stifles
another family member s respective dream. Hansberry uses the Younger family characters to argue
that America is not a land of equal opportunity due to racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility
and to make American society aware of the disadvantages that African Americans are faced with.
Hansberry uses Walter Younger, an African American male character who aspires to have a better
socioeconomic position in the United States, to reveal the economic and social inequities African
Americans face. During the play, Walter Younger states that he is tired of everything [...] [and] the way
[they] live (Hansberry 32) because he doesn t have a career to help him move up in society and all he

Webster Industries: A Critical Analysis of Carter s Process for Decision Making There are several
weaknesses in the process that Carter used for decision making. Perhaps the most severe of them all
was the lack of sight with respect to the strategy of the Webster Industries. The financials for the

downturn. If that was indeed the case, Carter should requested an adjustment to the anchoring bias of

taught us the value of the voice of dissension. While Stevens acts like the character of Tom from
Carter Racing, Jack Bryant from Personnel Audit team would have been the voice of Paul. Carter
should have included him on the team and listened to his experiences while talking to the employees

process was more likely to reveal the real situation than PAS or the brief audit reports. Just as NASA,
after the Challenger Disaster instituted a rule that a launch could be vetoed by anyone in the team,
including Jack in the conversation would have served as an antidote to overconfidence bias that would
otherwise creep in. I am also reminded of an example we discussed in class of a mechanical engineer
supervisor identifying more with other mechanical engineers in her group than software engineers.

Cosmopolitanism In Kwame Anthony Appiah s Open City
Globalism invites us to connect across boarders and cultures. It offers us the means to travel across the
world by plane, train, automobile, or in the case of Open City by foot. Much of Open City takes place
in moments of transit whether that means taxis, plane rides, or aimless walks in the city, Julius

important context to one of the subtle themes of Open City: Cosmopolitanism. With globalization and
thus increasing access to different countries and cultures, there is a question of whether or not
cosmopolitanism is a desirable outlook to move toward. For Appiah, there are two strands of
cosmopolitanism one strand pushes past nationalism in the way it opens up the conception of
community. This not only means conceiving of ourselves as citizens of the world, but extending our
duties and obligations beyond those immediate to us (pg number). One might think of Peter Singer s

  • 2. Defense Mechanisms And The Defense Mechanism Everyone has a few coping techniques to reduce anxiety from unacceptable or even harmful impulses. These coping techniques are performed unconsciously and they are known as defense mechanisms. When a body uses a defense mechanism they are attempting to distort, deny, or manipulate their reality to defend their self schema. There are a few different types of defense mechanisms many of which classified by Anna Freud that would later appear in the works of Sigmund Freud. The psychiatrist George Eman Vaillant introduced a way of organizing the mechanisms into a system of levels. The level system is as follows: level I is about pathological defences, level II explains immature defences, level III neurotic defences, and lastly level IV mature defences. An individual could use multiple different defense mechanisms from different levels though. For example a person could be using an immature defense mechanism such as regression and a mature mechanism like humor. This essay will delve into the description of these levels and the defense mechanisms they contain. Pathological defenses usually occur from someone who unconsciously preserves their traditional aspects of life. They will think very totalistic and rigidly since they are trying to preserve what they believe they won t make any compromises. One pathological defense mechanism would be projection. Projection occurs when someone has a value that says they should act a certain way, then their value is challenged and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the past couple of decades the rise in non denominational churches has been increasing greatly and are said to be the second largest group of Protestants (Moore, 2011). It is said that most that break off and become apart of this fast growing belief come from a protestant upbringing. The study shows that more people are determining on where to worship by how they like the nursery, if the worship music is good, is it close to home, rather than I am a Catholic I need to go to a Catholic Church. We finally made our way to the auditorium, and there were many people in what looked like the lunchroom for this high school. All sitting around tables just waiting to go be seated in the main auditorium. The band was still working on the sound details so we were not allowed to be seated yet. The pastors would walk around and welcome everyone. As I was told everyone was wearing just what was comfortable nothing to fancy, that make me feel better. Except for the fact that my younger cousin asked me if I was going skiing after church because I was like one of the few wearing Jeans and a cardigan. After a few more laughs it was time to make our way in and find our seats. For me at my church I have my side and few aisles that I mainly stick to every Sunday, so when we went two rows from the stage I was a little out of my element. As we walked in the lights were dim and the first thing you see is this huge beautiful painting of Jesus. Then you see the monitors on each side of the stage and then the band starts to welcome us. One thing about seating that I thought was different was they had ushers and ropes closing sections off. All the rows in the front had to be filled before the next section was to be opened. Great way to make sure you have everyone close to the front. The band leads us ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Diagnostic Imaging INTRODUCTION Modern medicine has undergone major advancements over the past years. One of these developments include the capacity to retrieve crucial information about the human body and its health beyond the use of manual diagnostic techniques. This is referred to as Medical or Diagnostic Imaging. Medical or Diagnostic Imaging refers to the various techniques that can be used to see inside the human body. Its non invasive nature means that the body does not have to be opened up surgically for medical practitioners to view the organs anatomically. In clinical settings, it can be used to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of different ailments. Early diagnosis provided by its sophisticated technology saves countless patient lives, and without its help, we wouldn t have been able to develop cures or treatments for many diseases. Its ability to monitor subtle changes in patients that would otherwise be missed by unassisted human eyes is also a hallmark of modern clinical practice. The radiograph, one of the most common diagnostic imaging tools utilized in this field, possesses a very important component called contrast. Contrast helps radiologists perceive image detail and glean information from the area of interest. Radiation Technologists, or Rad Techs, should always ensure that radiographs have the right amount of contrast so that the radiologist can easily read them for faster diagnosis. In terms of education, enormous equipment and expensive yet high quality machines have always surrounded the College of Medical Radiation Technology (or CMRT). However, it is not just about the cost but also about their effectiveness and usefulness for the CMRT students. With these machines, students get to have hands on activities that prepare them for when they take their internship in hospitals and as future health ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lymphangiomas is the overgrowth of the lymph channels, which can cause airway constriction, and other aspects to the heart and lung function. The lymphatic systems function is to filter out pathogens in the blood. Vessels of the lymphatics are a one way system allowing fluids to come in but not to flow out. The issue lies in when these lymph vessels swell or begin to back up. In the case of lymphangiomas, these channels swell and get abnormally large. At Stanford, a common drug used for erectile dysfunction called sildenafil has been found to treat symptoms of lymphangiomas. The topic that is now up for debate is that if the use of sildenafil or commonly known Viagra should be used as a treatment for lymphangiomas in children and infants. The tagline to Joel Schumacher s 1987 film, The Lost Boys, glorifies the allure of being a member of the undead. The transformation into a teenager, or vampire, are both marked by a turbulent time of sexual development, peer pressure, and is an important phase in the formation of their identity. In literature, and in film, the vampire can be perceived as the perfect metaphor for a teenager due to the parallel nature that they both share and the hardships they endure. Michael starts out as an ordinary teen at the beginning of the film, but after encountering David and the Lost Boys, he decides to change his look in attempts to fit in with them and impress Star. Wearing dark sunglasses soon becomes part of his bad boy image, and his mother starts to complain that he is staying out until the middle of the night and sleeping in all day (Schumacher Bros,1987). Another instance where rebellion occurs, is when the teenage vampires kill the security guard from the boardwalk merry go round. By removing the only male and parental authoritative figure (with the exception of Max, the head vampire and video store owner), the Lost Boys bring about the absence of competent adult males. The Formation Of A Contract A contract is an agreement between people or legal entities (such as corporations) in which one party agrees to perform a service or provide goods in exchange for the payment of money or other goods or services. A binding, legally enforceable contract can be in writing or oral. The formation of a contract is accomplished when there is an offer and acceptance between the contracting parties of the exchange of consideration, something of value. This offer and acceptance are occasionally referred to as a meeting of the minds. If the parties have not reached a meeting of the minds, then there is no agreement. By giving a ring as promise ring, inviting Emily to Florida any by Emily accepting the ring, both Victoria and Emily entered into a bilateral contract. 0% Issues One key issue for this case is Breach of Contract . By giving the engagement ring and promising to Emily a better life in Florida, and asking her to move to Florida and Emily accepts the ring, a Bilateral contract was created. When Victoria went back on her promise she breached the contract. Also by not mentioning to Emily that she was still married is a clear act of fraud by Victoria. Breach of Contract Both unilateral and bilateral agreements are enforceable in the courts. The agreements change the status of the parties to it. The reverse is possible too. Breach of contract can occur due to many reasons. With the bilateral agreement, both the parties will suffer if the agreement is not fulfilled. It is more of a symbiotic relationship. A breach of engagement to marry is a cause of action in some jurisdiction. Some states have taken the exemption to this. Florida is one of these states. Victoria s promise to marry Emily is treated as a legally binding contract. When a breach is committed to such promise, an action will lie for damages. • 10. Political Leadership And Its Importance 1. Theoretical Definition Being a leader is a complex fate. Although contradictions and clashing expectations are part of life, they are especially present in the exercise of leadership (Cronin and Genovese 2012, 1). Political leadership is a broad multidimensional phenomenon that has been analyzed through various lenses; yet there is no one concrete definition. In the following response, I will present a brief overview of my interpretation through which I have come to understand political leadership and its importance. Then, I will examine the relevance of the typologies and authors we have considered in relation to political leadership. Although Sandberg s framework can be useful in the business world, I find that studying political leadership strictly from a gender based approach could be insufficient. Regardless of his/her gender, a leader is an individual that possesses the necessary characteristics that will make or break his/her leadership. In her book, The Power of Latino leadership, Juana Bordas offers culture based analysis of leadership. Although her book focuses on Latino culture, I find some of the leadership principles that she offers, relevant in trying to define political leadership. For example, Personalismo (The Character of the Leader) is a leadership principle that explores leaders abilities to connect with people and embody traits that will exemplify trust and respect in relation to their followers (Bordas 2013, 8). Juntos (we are together) describes the collective and collaborative nature of leadership (Bordas 2013, 10). The leader works hand in hand with his/her followers to achieve the desired common end results (Bordas 2013, 10). These two principles presented by Bordas are strongly related to James MacGregor Burns account of transforming leadership. He describes transforming leadership as a collective process where leaders and followers empower each other to fulfill the wants and the needs of the people (Burns 2003, 2). Burns argues that deep and durable change, guided and measured by values, is the ultimate purpose of transforming leadership, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. It Goes Into A Landfill Most people don t think about where their trash goes after the garbage trucks empty the trash bins. It goes into a landfill, which is a carefully engineered and managed structure and acts as a final disposal option for waste ( Solid Waste Agency ). The purpose of a landfill is to bury trash in a way that it will be isolated from groundwater, will be kept dry, and will not come into contact with air. Under these conditions, the excess waste does not decompose very much (Freudenrich). Many objects that are thrown into the trash, which end up into a landfill, can actually be recycled. 20% of the items in landfills can be recycled, and another 25% are compostable, and a further 16% are recoverable (Curiosity Quest). A total of 61% of the landfill can be diverted to better use. Since most Americans don t know about what objects can be recycled, or just ignore the recycle labels, the objects end up in a landfill. In the U.S, people produce about 4.6 pounds of trash per person per day, which equates to 251 million tons of trash per year (Freudenrich). This is slightly less than all the other countries trash combined (Alabama Environmental Council). Most of this trash is buried in a landfill, and the rest is recycled, composted, and burned (Freudenrich). 81.8 million tons of trash in 2006 could have been recycled or composted, but were instead sent into a landfill (Freudenrich). The growth of Filipinos living in Canada has been showing a positive trend, as there are only 11,011Filipinos in 2002 as compared to the 34,991 permanent Filipino residents in 2011. • 14. Animal Farm By George Orwell Essay Animal Farm is of course, a satirical allegory, very specifically of the Russian Revolution and of Stalin (Napoleon in the book), but more generally of revolution, the idealism of utopias, and the way in which people take control of societies founded on principles of equality. It is a satirical allegory of Soviet totalitarianism. Orwell based major events in the book on ones from the Soviet Union during the Stalin era. Orwell, a democratic socialist, and a member of the Independent Labour Party for many years, was a critic of Stalin, and was suspicious of Moscow directed Stalinism after his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. In Animal Farm George Orwell demonstrates the psychological foundation of revolution, its processes and the irony of displacement of an oppressive regime by the new revolutionary order. The revolution is hardly complete before differences appear and so idealistic intentions are progressively undermined by the assumption of total authority by the pigs. The pigs did not actually work but directed and supervised the others. Orwell intended Animal Farm to be a strong condemnation of what he saw as the Stalinist corruption of the original socialist ideals. He, in the two books, is obsessed with the idea of revolution directly or indirectly. He described what gave him the idea of setting the book on a farm: I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge carthorse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Puppy Mills Have Been Notorious For Keeping The Puppy... Puppy mills have been notorious for keeping the puppy trade industry alive and as big as it is today. With thousands of puppy mills, both known and under the radar, they provide easy access and cheap puppies to sell at pet stores at inflated prices. While they do keep the business booming and keep pure breeds that may specialize in important roles, they continue to put countless numbers of dogs through terrifying pain. To stop the agonizing torture the lovable pups go through, stricter rules must be applied to these puppy mills, a new license regulation must be used, regular inspections, and awareness of alternative options must be made. With already set regulations on puppy mills, people say there is no reason to have any additions on the rules. There is a kennel license, which restricts how many dogs someone can have depending on how much square footage of land he or she owns. This regulates the amount of dogs that can be held for breeding and to keep the area clean and safe enough for all the dogs involved. People are required to go through a moderately long process to achieve their license, to ensure that these dogs will be okay. Puppy mills are also known for keeping pure breed numbers up, such as beloved German shepherds, poodles, Welsh Pembroke corgis, and Labradors. Having mixed breeds can be healthier of course but as Sofia Jeppsson had said in her article Purebred Dogs and Canine Wellbeing, However, in the long run such a strategy would severely deplete the ... In an attempt to cause Peter to realize that his own life is filled with emptiness and shallowness, Jerry tells Peter about the lives of some of the people in his boarding house. Albee is commenting that people need to foster their inner selves in addition to what they allow others to see on the outside. Another interesting piece of information that Jerry presents to Peter about the colored queen is that he always leaves the door open when he is plucking his eyebrows. Not only does this reinforce the fact that he is self absorbed and materialistic, but it tells something about the inside of his persona as well. The act of plucking one s eyebrows is quite painful, and the fact that he leaves his door open when committing this act of self mutilation reflects the idea that he wants society to be aware of his inner pain and strife. People are constantly looking for sympathy and for others to tell them that everything will be all right. The colored queen is no different. He wants people to be aware that he feels pain. Keeping his door open shows that he, like the rest society, is crying out for help, and wants to be noticed and cared for. While the colored queen represents the part of society that wallows in their own self pity, Albee points out through the use of other minor characters that there are other ways of avoiding pain, and dealing with that pain. • 24. The Concept of Comparative Advantage The comparative advantage The concept of the comparative advantage was first coined in 1817 by economist David Ricardo, in his On the principles of political economy and taxation. The underlying idea of the comparative advantage theory is that the countries possess different resources and capabilities and they can produce some specific items in a more efficient manner than other countries can produce the same items, or more efficiently that the same country can produce other items. In such a setting then, the countries would best decide to produce the items for which they possess a comparative advantage, and then exchange them within the international market place, for items for the production of which they do not possess a comparative advantage (Pullen, 2006). Today, the application of the comparative advantage is revealed mostly at the level of the leading economic powers in the world, who seek to create advantages in terms of exports, and as such maximize their gains (Acharya, 2008). The concept and application of the comparative advantage theory has raised vast interest throughout the past century, and this interest is revealed at both theoretical and well as practical level. Furthermore, as the modern day society becomes more and more engaged in globalization and market liberalization, the application of the comparative advantage theory is gaining more momentum. All of which have a central theme of change, not in times, but in the real, physical world. He talks about mice losing their little dream of living in a burrow made in common earth, a world of seedpods and quiet, of green sheltering leaves in the dim light among the weed stems and how they are coldly denied even the simplest of yearnings. The presence of these key ethical teachings in modern society by pope johns attempts to reconnect adherents to the original teachings of jesus, has therefore made Christianity a living religious tradition. Adultery is prohibited in Christianity. The act of sexual intercourse is said to be between two people under the union of god, with the intention of creating life. In pope john XXIII s encyclical Pacem in Terris he expresses this ethical teaching by stating The family, founded upon marriage freely contracted, one and indissoluble, must be regarded as the natural, primary cell of human society. Former UFC and WWE superstar Ken Shamrock stated, I really believed with my experience that it is a lot tougher on me having to get up day to day and go out there and take 10, 15, 20 bumps, seven, eight, or ten days in a row. It was tough (SportsGrid). WWE is the biggest promotion in professional wrestling and is the most demanding out of all other promotions. • 37. A Raisin Of The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry Lorraine Hansberry, a female playwright and black activist, spent almost all of her life dealing with American racism, poverty, and lack of social mobility. As a person who witnessed the daily struggles of African Americans, Hansberry wanted to expose the hypocrisy in the idea that America was the land of equal opportunity. As a result, in 1959, Hansberry wrote the play, A Raisin in the Sun, which details the Youngers, an African American family, who experienced racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility during the 1950s in Chicago s Southside. Throughout the play, the Younger family members try to make their respective dreams come true and try to deal with the problems that surround them. However, the process of one family member achieving his or her own dream stifles another family member s respective dream. Hansberry uses the Younger family characters to argue that America is not a land of equal opportunity due to racism, poverty, and the lack of social mobility and to make American society aware of the disadvantages that African Americans are faced with. Hansberry uses Walter Younger, an African American male character who aspires to have a better socioeconomic position in the United States, to reveal the economic and social inequities African Americans face. During the play, Walter Younger states that he is tired of everything [...] [and] the way [they] live (Hansberry 32) because he doesn t have a career to help him move up in society and all he can give is ... • 38. Essay on Webster Industries Webster Industries: A Critical Analysis of Carter s Process for Decision Making There are several weaknesses in the process that Carter used for decision making. Perhaps the most severe of them all was the lack of sight with respect to the strategy of the Webster Industries. The financials for the company clearly show that by October 1975 the company was probably recovering from the downturn. If that was indeed the case, Carter should requested an adjustment to the anchoring bias of 15% downsizing target and examined the list of criteria that Stevens laid out in the light of sustained growth. Healthy growth requires people who are competent in their current job as well as people with potential. Consequently the group should have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simultaneously BP s HR set up a massive redeployment process which ultimately allowed 83% employees laid off to get equivalent or better jobs and this kept the morale strong. Carter s group should have involved Webster Industries HR in the process to take a similar approach especially since Clearwater was a Webster company town . Carter Racing and NASA examples discussed in the class taught us the value of the voice of dissension. While Stevens acts like the character of Tom from Carter Racing, Jack Bryant from Personnel Audit team would have been the voice of Paul. Carter should have included him on the team and listened to his experiences while talking to the employees and their managers. After all, his on the ground experience and intuition gained through the audit process was more likely to reveal the real situation than PAS or the brief audit reports. Just as NASA, after the Challenger Disaster instituted a rule that a launch could be vetoed by anyone in the team, including Jack in the conversation would have served as an antidote to overconfidence bias that would otherwise creep in. I am also reminded of an example we discussed in class of a mechanical engineer supervisor identifying more with other mechanical engineers in her group than software engineers. • 39. Cosmopolitanism In Kwame Anthony Appiah s Open City Globalism invites us to connect across boarders and cultures. It offers us the means to travel across the world by plane, train, automobile, or in the case of Open City by foot. Much of Open City takes place in moments of transit whether that means taxis, plane rides, or aimless walks in the city, Julius inhabits a space of constant flux. Yet, despite this continual movement, Julius finds himself stuck in transit, unable to connect. Due to his cosmopolitan outlook and alienation, Julius fails to take a stand on anything, and so he must walk. No flags... something more interesting, (186) says Julius choosing a stamp at the post office. What he is delivering is Kwame Anthony Appiah s, Cosmopolitanism, but what this detail delivers to the text is important context to one of the subtle themes of Open City: Cosmopolitanism. With globalization and thus increasing access to different countries and cultures, there is a question of whether or not cosmopolitanism is a desirable outlook to move toward. For Appiah, there are two strands of cosmopolitanism one strand pushes past nationalism in the way it opens up the conception of community. This not only means conceiving of ourselves as citizens of the world, but extending our duties and obligations beyond those immediate to us (pg number). One might think of Peter Singer s famous essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality wherein he argues that we have a great moral obligation to worldwide humanitarian efforts, despite our physical ... • 40. Middle School Observation Report One day in middle school, the whole 8th grade class got to go to the gym because their teacher was out for the day. Everyone knew the gym was were the bullies came to harass the other kids. The 6th graders were sitting across the gym just minding their own business, no one really ever bothered them, unless they came to the 8th graders side of the gym. There were always a few of the kids that would happen to linger across sides and the inevitable always tended to happen. They never really saw a big deal with it, other than it being sitting with the older kids. Two of the older girls were sitting at the top of the bleachers, while the younger two had come over and sat almost at the bottom of the bleachers. Even though the 8th graders were supposed ... Getting students to read something that seems at first so straightforward but actually figuring out it has a hidden message in the story. Greg Lenihan teaches at Hellgate High School. In his class they were reading A Little Fable by Franz Kafka. He wanted students to write an interpretation of the story. A student from the class stated, After reading the story on my own, I was somewhat lost . Another student said When I read the story, I saw it in one way. Then, after some discussion, my ideas changed, and the story made more sense, and to me became better. I hundred percent relate to what these students are saying when you first read the story you are very lost but after discussing with others and seeing there interpretations of the story you start to build an understand of the hidden message in the story (Lenihan, Reading with ...
