Difficulty remaining focused Trouble organizing tasks Often has difficulty waiting his or her turn Acts as if “driven by a motor” Often interrupts or intrudes on others Is often forgetful of daily activities Often avoids or dislikes engaging in tasks that require sustained mental effort What is ADHD? ADHD is an acronym for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a psychological condition that begins in early childhood and frequently persists into adulthood. It is classified as a developmental disorder. There are three subtypes of the disorder: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, or a combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impuslive. Research points to four primary causes of ADHD: neurodevelopmental factors, neurophysiological deficits, prenatal causes such as smoking, and genetic factors. How is it diagnosed? A medical doctor can rule out medical conditions that may be the cause of symptoms; start here. A psychologist or other mental health professional trained in psychological testing can assess & accurately diagnose ADHD with subtype. Pharmacotherapy, in conjunction with psychotherapy is a researched supported effective treatment plan; a psychiatrist can prescribe medications. Are Community Resources Available?
