DESCRIPTION
Additive manufacturing is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually
layer upon layer as opposed to traditional subtractive manufacturing methodologies.
AM is used to built physical models, prototypes, patterns, tooling components and production parts in
plastics, metal, ceramics o composite materials.
AM systems use thin, horizontal cross sections from computer-aided design (CAD) models, 3D-scanning
systems, medical scanners and video games produce parts that may difficult or impossible to fabricate
any other way.

1) 1988 saw the invention of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), the first 3D printing process, by Scott Crump. 2) Stratasys began selling the first thermoplastic for 3D printing, ABS plastic, in 1994 and introduced their first 3D printer under $30,000 in 2002. 3) Objet was founded in 1998 and introduced multi-material 3D printing technologies in 2007 and 2012 before merging with Stratasys in 2012 to become a leader in the 3D printing industry.

Specifically, they used a Formiga P100 laser sintering system to produce nylon frames. This allowed them to efficiently produce and modify the frames over 15 design iterations. Additive manufacturing process, also popularly known as 3-D printing, is a process where a product is created in a succession of layers. It is based on a novel materials incremental manufacturing philosophy. Unlike conventional manufacturing processes where material is removed from a given work price to derive the final shape of a product, 3-D printing develops the product from scratch thus obviating the necessity to cut away materials. This prevents wastage of raw materials. Commonly used raw materials for the process are ABS plastic, PLA and nylon. Recently the use of gold, bronze and wood has also been implemented. The complexity factor of this process is 0% as in any object of any shape and size can be manufactured.

Additive Manufacturing DESCRIPTION Additive manufacturing is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer as opposed to traditional subtractive manufacturing methodologies. AM is used to built physical models, prototypes, patterns, tooling components and production parts in plastics, metal, ceramics o composite materials. AM systems use thin, horizontal cross sections from computer-aided design (CAD) models, 3D-scanning systems, medical scanners and video games produce parts that may difficult or impossible to fabricate any other way.
