Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Adding an Image to the Staff Review Blog
- 1. Off the Shelf: Adding an Image to a book review post
- 2. Choose “Classic Catalog” to get started.
- 3. Do a title search for the item you are reviewing.
- 4. In the item record, click “Reviews & More.”
- 5. Right click on the cover image.
- 7. … and copy the Syndetics web address.
- 8. In Wordpress, click the “add an image” button.
- 9. Choose the “From URL” tab.
- 10. Click in the “Image URL” box and paste the Syndetics web address you copied from the catalog.
- 11. Give your image a title.
- 12. Select “Left” from the alignment options.
- 13. Then click “Insert into Post.”
- 14. We’re not done yet! We need to link the image back to the catalog record.
- 15. Click on the book cover…
- 16. … then click the “add link” button.
- 17. Paste the web address for the item list in the link URL box.
- 18. You’ll get that web address from the catalog search page.
- 19. After you paste the catalog web address, click “Insert” to finish.
- 20. Now you can use the “add a link” button to link the title to the same catalog record.
- 21. Highlight the title and click the “add a link” button.
- 22. Paste the web address from the library catalog title search and click “Insert.”
- 23. Now you are ready to write your review. But first – click Save Draft to save all the work you’ve done so far!
