This document summarizes research on leadership dimensions and the choices leaders make. It discusses 7 dimensions of leadership: understanding, direction, timing, relationships, loyalties, control, and self-belief. For each dimension, leaders must balance competing priorities, such as enquiring while knowing, acknowledging limits while imagining better futures, waiting and seeing while accelerating progress, getting close while maintaining distance, putting own needs first while serving the organization, letting go while keeping control, and showing vulnerability while being strong. Effective leaders are aware of these dimensions and adapt their approach based on the needs of the moment rather than sticking to one approach.
