Sigmund Freud
• An Austrian neurologist
who pioneered
disciplines in
psychoanalysis.
• Father of psychoanalysis
Terms and definition
• Erogenous Zone -is characterizedasan area oftge
body that is particularly sensitive to stimulation.
• Fixation - if the child needs at one of the
psychosexual stages were either unsatisfied or over
satisfied.
• Libido - driving force behind the behavior.
Freud's Stages of Psychosexual
Development
1.Oral Stage (birth - 1 year)
• EZ: mouth
• The child focuses on oral
pleasures(sucking).
• Fixation:(a.)Oral Receptive -
stronger tendency to smoke,
drink alchohol and over
eat.(b.)Oral Aggressive -
tendency to bite nails,use curse
words or even gossip;may
result to too dependent, easily
fooled and lack leadership
traits.
2.Anal Stage (1 - 3 y/o)
• EZ: Bowel and Bladder control
• Child has to control their
bodily needs;Find
satisfactionin eliminating and
retaining feces.
• Fixation:(a.)Anal Retentive -
obsession in
cleanliness,perfection and
control.(b.)Anal Expulsive -
messy,wasteful, disorganized,
destructive personality
3.Phallic Stage(3 - 6 y/o )
• EZ: Genitals
• Child begin to discover the differences
between male and female.
• Oedipus complex -feelings in wanting to
possess the mother and desire to replace
the father but fears to be punished by
father which Freud coined as Castration
Anxiety.
• Electra Complex - is similar to oedipus but
instead females experience penis envy.
• Fixation:sexual deviances;weak and
confused sexual identity accdg. To
psychoanalysts.
4.Latency Stage (6 y/o - puberty)
• EZ: Sexual Feelings are
inactive
• Sexual urges remains
repressed.Children
develops social
skills,values, relationship
with peers and adults
outside the family.
• Fixation: can result to
immaturity and inability to
form fulfilling
relationships as an adult.
5.Genital Stage (puberty - death)
• Sexual urges are
awakened,the
individual develop
a strong sexual
interest to the
opposite sex.
Freud's 3 Personality Component
Topographical Model
• Unconscious - processthat happens
automaticallyand isn't available for
introspection;deeper mental
process.g.e.suppressed feelings,auto
reactions,complexes and concealed phobia.
• Concious - consist of everything inside our
awareness.
• Subconscious (preconscious) - allows us to do
things we don't have to think about but we can
alter them if we chose to.g.e.breathing,habits.
• Non-concious - all that we are not aware of ,have
not experienced and that has not been made part
of our personalities.
