Sam Nutter delivered this conference presentation about integrating the new CSG Energy Performance Score into the Mass Save® program. Mass Save is a well established, long running residential retrofit program with existing systems and contractors. Integrating an Energy Performance Score into an existing program can be challenging (training; time; communication). A significant magnitude of data integration of a new system adds complexity. Home MPG leverages federal funding to experiment with unique delivery features including the EPS, widespread infrared imaging, and bonus incentives designed to encourage deeper retrofits and greater savings per home.
1. Home MPG:
Adding an Energy Performance Score
to the Mass Save®
Home Energy Services Program

2. Conservation Services Group (CSG)
• Founded in 1984
• Nonprofit corporation
• ~800 staff responsible for 7,000+ field jobs
nationwide
• Over 3 million homes and facilities served
• Manage the delivery of over $250 million in energy
efficiency and renewable energy investments and
projects annually
3. Talking Points
1. Mass Save® Home Energy Services
2. Integrating the new CSG Energy
Performance Score (EPS)
3. Data collection, tracking and reporting
4. New incentives in the “Home MPG”
initiative
7. Mass Save® Home Energy Services (HES)
• 4 Lead Vendors
Conservation Services Group
Honeywell Utility Services
RISE Engineering
Center for EcoTechnology
• 100 +/- Independent Installation Contractors
• 20 +/- Home Performance Contractors
7
8. Mass Save® Home Energy Services (HES)
Program Offerings
• No-cost Home Energy Assessment (HEA) including:
CFLs
7-day digital programmable thermostats
Low flow showerheads and faucet aerators
• No-cost air sealing where applicable & recommended
• Insulation – instant rebates up to $2,000
• Energy efficient refrigerator rebates
• High efficiency heating system and hot water heater rebates
• High efficiency A/C QIV services and rebates
• HEAT Loan – 0% interest; terms up to 7 years
8
9. Standard Mass Save HES report produced statewide by CSG for National Grid customers
10. Includes list of items installed during HEA and detailed future recommendations
12. Why Do We Need an EPS?
• Test consumer acceptance of new format
• EPS provides additional information for consumers
Compares their home to local averages
Shows before and after ratings – goal setting
Provides environmental information
• Test consumer understanding of principles presented
15. Energy Performance Score (EPS)
• Million btu of energy consumed by house
– Million btu AKA: Mbtu or mmbtu
– Electric and fossil fuel treated as equal (site basis)
– As estimated by the model (not from billing)
• “Asset-based”
– Eliminate occupancy factors
– Standard assumptions about thermostat settings,
appliance/lighting use, etc.
15
17. Carbon Footprint
• Based on state-average carbon emissions
• Major fuel(s) and electricity in house model
• Source: EIA/DOE (eGrid database)
– By eGrid subregion
17
18. Integrating the EPS Scorecard
• Why not use the Earth Advantage EPS?
Both modeling tools produce similar results, but…
• Mass Save® HES provides “turnkey” services:
Energy Assessment report
Customer contract for weatherization work
Work orders and change orders for contractors
Inspection reports, quality assurance tracking
Invoices, instant rebates, and customer receipts
Data reporting for National Grid and MA DOER
• Easier to add EPS to our system
18
20. Data, Data, ….
• Reporting requirements for MA
• Transmitted monthly
• 99 possible data fields per customer
• Use CSG’s EnergyMeasure®
20
21. …..and MORE Data!
U.S. DOE reporting requirements
• Different than MA reporting
• 215 line spreadsheet
each line = data field
despite length, not enough flexibility
for complex homes (ex. multiple attics)
• 1 column per customer
• Requires new data transfer protocol
• Some data fields require translation
(inches vs. R-value) or manual data entry
21
23. New Home MPG Deep Retrofit Incentives
EE Measure Mass Save® HES rebate Home MPG adder
Insulation 75% up to $2000 cap 75% up to $1750
Propane Furnace with $500 $500
ECM Blower, 95% AFUE
Propane Hot Water $1000 $1000
Boiler, 90% AFUE
Ductless mini split, min $500 $500
EER 12, min HSPF 8.5
Air source heat pumps, $300 $300
EER 12.5, HSPF 8.5
Air source heat pump $1000 $1000
water heaters, EF 2.3 or
greater, 10 year warranty
• Note: Terms & conditions apply; must be pre-approved
• Expected launch November 2012; Home MPG towns only!
24. Summary
• Mass Save® is a well established, long running
program with existing systems and contractors
• Integrating an EPS into an existing program can be
challenging (training; time to serve; communication)
• Data integration of a new system adds complexity
• Home MPG leverages significant federal funding to
experiment with several unique delivery features
including the EPS, widespread infrared imaging, and
bonus incentives designed to encourage deeper
retrofits and greater savings per home.

Editor's Notes
key points here circled—126 is the number, Mbtu (shown as ‘mmbtu’) is the unit.
Example:872 Therm * 11.7 lb / 2000 = 5.1 T11,320 kWh * 0.99 lb/kWh/ 2000 = 5.6 T sum: 10.7 TAssumes: 11.7 lb of CO2/therm 0.99 lb of CO2/kWh 2000 lb / ton (T)
Standard monthly National Grid reporting template – 2 files with dozens of lines of code. One set per HEA.Highlighted yellow fields indicate data fields not available in Earth Advantage – mostly product specific or billing related data
High Performance HVAC equipment in Home MPG towns = double the Mass Save rebatePilot’s 8 communities, 6 of which are served by National Grid / CSG: Belchertown, East Longmeadow, Hampden, Monson, Palmer, and Wilbraham
