Visual Miscue
Category
Reading Behavior
Whole Word Student looks at the shape of the whole word.
Word Guessing
Student looks at the first letter of the word and
guesses/predicts.
Tracking Difficulty Student reads the letter sequence out of order.
Consonant
Blends/Clusters
Student omits letters/sounds from consonant
blends or clusters.
Letter Reversals
Student reverses and substitutes visually similar
letters (e.g., b/d/p/q)
Complex Sound
Patterns
Student has difficulty with complex sound
patterns (r-controlled, variant vowel, etc.)
Vowel Confusion
Student substitutes incorrect
short/long vowel sounds.
Word Family Confusion
Student substitutes incorrect
word chunks or families.
Blending Difficulty
Student is unable to blend individual sounds or
word chunks/syllables together.
Extremely Fast Pace
Student reads too fast and stumbles through
sounds or makes careless visual errors.
Extremely Slow Pace
Student is slow to process sounds or has
