This document provides an abstract for a PhD defense presentation on modifying and characterizing transparent oxides using ion beam techniques. The presentation will discuss using ion implantation to modify the structural, optical absorption, and emission properties of single crystalline SiO2, Al2O3, and ZnO. Results show significant modifications that directly correlate with specific point defects. Based on these results and density functional theory calculations, an energy level scheme is proposed for native point defects in ZnO. Additionally, recommendations are made for improving the efficiency of ZnO assisted photocatalysis. The presentation will also demonstrate how colour center formation in sapphire results from dynamic competition between defect creation and recombination. Finally, artificial ruby is successfully synthesized and characterized. The work
