Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He came from a poor family and had little formal education, but taught himself by reading many books. Lincoln experienced many failures in his early career and lost several elections, but he never gave up. He went on to be elected as president in 1861, where he helped end slavery and preserved the Union during the Civil War. However, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the Civil War ended.
